For gaming and movies I use Razer Electra.
They're pretty cheap and the sound is beautiful. Although there's a little thing which bothers me, and that's the bass, but it's more of a personal preference rather than something common. It's a little too powerful for me, especially at high levels of of volume.

Here goes, I need a new pair of headphones. I've had my Sennheiser HD205 for over 6 years, very very satisfied with them ( minus the material peeling ), but it's time for a change. I'm quite an audiophile, I like more bass, I'd stay with Sennheiser, looking at the Momentum over-ear, but I don't want to spend that amount of money and I've read about Sennheiser not being what it used to be.
I'll be using them for gaming as well, but no mic built in, please.
Currently looking at Audio Technica ATH-M50x - guess I could say that the budget is 150-175 euros.

Not into Philips and Think Sound have the wooden finish ( although the most stylish ).
V-Moda vs M50x it is now ( not completely sold on how V-Moda looks ).
Thanks!

Have the non-x version myself since 2010.
Great sound.
Just the cushions make my ears sweat after some time and depending on the temps.

Either one is a good choice. Just do your bit of research and find which one fits what you want. Either way you'll be happy.

SHP9500 are excellent. Have them, love them. For the price they are winners in quality.
Normally, I use Sennheiser HD 700. At work, I use modified HD 555. Recent models, such as HD 559 and 599 are also very good.
Right now, I am on a hunt for a reasonably priced HD 600. Perhaps for black friday or cyber monday.

Im using the first iteration of the Momentum and they are great - Nice clean sound and a great bass. Unfortunately the cable is quite sensitive to regular use. Think I've bought 8 replacement cables for it in the last two years

Yes, I am aware. It is a drop limited to 5000, so not sure if I'll be able to order in time. I wouldn't necessarily call the 650 and 600 similar - they are different, with different characteristics. But at that price, it is a steal.

The 600 are more neutral than the 650 and the sound stage is better on the 650, so yeah they're different, but generally speaking if you already own the 600; the 650 aren't worth the extra cost as an upgrade. But if you're looking to buy 600 atm, the 6xx is a better buy at that cost.
And if you can't get them on November 8th and just don't care about the low serial numbers, just wait for the next sale on massdrop (they'll return, just like the AKG 7XX) or just buy a used HD650. The prices for them are already dropping after the announcements of 6XXs.

I am in no rush to make a purchase. If I don't get it, I don't get it. I've been following the 600 price trend for a few years now. I was most annoyed a few years ago that I missed the HD 580 new-old stock sales. Those were selling for very low prices, and those were (at least the latter HD 580 models) very similar to HD 600.

Ha, so after a nerve wrenching server / authorization fail by Massdrop (who'd have thought that limiting such a drop to 5000 would introduce such a big wave of attempting buyers ), I managed to join the drop! So I'll be getting the HD 6XX probably at the turn of the year.

Were you among the first 500? I tried my luck and managed to load the page when it was at 374 buyers, but couldn't join the drop because of the server issues and the next time the page loaded it was already at 579 so I just gave up. Already own the HD650 and only wanted the low serial number on the HD6XX.

No. I was there from the start, but they were not prepared. Their payment authorization server / service provider failed miserably. I really don't care about a serial number though.

Then you'll be happy with the purchase. That's some nice pair of head speakers you got yourself there.
But if you really want to go crazy on a budget this holiday season, then there's also a sale on aliexpress on 11th that you can find some nice deals at. For example Nobsound MS-10D MKII; which is a nice ass hybrid tube amplifier with all the bells and whistle that will last you for years and will power your new headphones without any problem. Can find it on aliexpress for about 70+ bucks (but depending on your location, you'll have to add a bit more for shipping because of it's weight (about six kilograms)), which is a great price if you'll read about it or check for how much it goes on amazon.

With the SHP9500, HD 650 and HD 700, I have covered all my needs. The next target is now HD 800 S, but that is far off for now as you can imagine.

HD 800, HD 800 S and Beyer's T1 Gen 2's are on my 'to test' list. Before them my ODAC will be replaced by Schiit Jotunheim as soon as European shop has some in stock.

Help on this, why people consider buying DACs? Does it do more than amplify headphone experience?

DAC does not amplify. DAC converts digital signal to analog. It produces a much clearer and smoother sound. Amplifier is needed to drive headphones. There are DAC-AMP combos such as the Jotunheim. You can connect an AMP to your sound card or on board, but they are very prone to signal noise.

Exactly. At the top of that by using USB DAC you most likely don't need to install any kind of drivers regardless of your OS. Some USB DACs require drivers for 32/384 sounds etc but most of them don't. To me this driverless / OS native USB driver option is a huge advantage when you don't need to install bloatware bullshit to your computer.

Except Linux. My customized Bifrost did not work on Ubuntu and Elementary OS (Ubuntu derivative).

Not always the case. For the Bifrost to work on Windows 7 it needs drivers. It uses a c-media chip. That's if you use the USB mode anyways and I dunno how it is on windows 8 or 10.
