Cleaned the PC today, w/out removing the drives and after getting it back together, I noticed a different behavior.

Some apps are hanging now ( Photoshop, uTorrent ), tried closing them, no luck, they become unresponsive and then if I try to restart, it just hangs while "signing out".

Tried playing a movie via network, from my wife's laptop and the movie got stuck after a while, making both my PC and laptop unresponsive.

Scanning HDD for errors now, seems stuck at 15s remaining.

SMART status?
(CrystalDiskInfo for example, Defraggler has a quick but very simple health chart too using that.)

Could also be some background crap running taking critical amounts of HDD cycles slowing everything else down in the process.

EDIT: Probably would be most reliable to check HDD status via boot loader outside of Windows too if possible in any way.

Ok, my c: (which is ssd), ran error checking with no issues, d: (normal hdd), doesn't. I'm pretty sure my drive is almost fucked up, need to find solution to save data now.

Most likely there are better alternatives but that one has always worked alright for me. Just grabbed one of the many cracled versions around or wait for a free alternative that doesn't have the risk of including a bitcoin miner Razz

@Danyutz
Doesn't look faulty at all to me.

Have you checked the power and SATA cables?
You probably losened it a bit during the cleaning.

And how come you think the HDD is at fault here?

Might as well fucked something up on the mainboard or GPU.

Something with the UltraDMA CRC (Ending with a 3) but the rest are normal (0) besides of course the usual incremental ones such as spin time, start/stop counts and powered-on hours. Smile
(Well they're normal too of course as they are meant to increase over time.)

EDIT:
http://www.overclock.net/t/706633/ultra-dma-crc-error-count
(So it's not a disk error but it might be related to cabling or at worst the HDD controller though checking the cabling might be enough as already mentioned by Bob.)

Opened the case, and meddled with cables, power on, managed to save some files. Then did a checkdisk, which took roughly 2.30h.

So far it works now. Gonna monitor it for a while.

yep, the ultradma crc error stuff is 99% related to the cable, just replace it. (the other 1% could be a faulty sata controller or completely fucked drive, but the other values are fine so the drive shouldnt have problem itself)

i am sorry for you, but cleaning inside of a pc is always dangerous, because of electrostatical voltage. it's always: the thing works or the thing works not after cleaning. always dangerous. i just don't do it. best cleaning is using a brush...very very careful.
i know this does not solve your troubles, but i just wanted to mention.

good luck!

Well sticking a full-size vacuum cleaner in might cause some issues depending on the age of the hardware (It's pretty robust though far as I'm aware.) but as long as you are being careful there shouldn't be any huge risks unless you loosen some cable or similar, if using compressed air you'll also want to be careful about the fans on the CPU and GPU cooler and similar from what I've read but that might mainly be LED related and could have been improved since last I read about it which was several years ago.

Even with a dust filter (Or several.) it does build up, particularly for a air cooled unit as fans suck in surrounding dust particles and other stuff though personally I mostly just do a quick cleanup once a year albeit if you're more dedicated or what to say well it's not like it'll hurt to remove dust buildup and other stuff. Very Happy
(Same with the exterior stuff like the chassi itself let alone the mouse and keyboard for which you get fat or oil reside from your hands plus skins and what not and of course the monitor for which I'm guessing it still holds true that it's ideal to just use a little bit of water and a cloth to carefully clean that as to not damage any coating which could happen with stronger solutions.)

(I guess if you're really into it then cleaning alcohol and cotton or what not to clean or replace TIM on CPU or GPU can also be done but that's a bit more than I usually get into although I heard it can be quite useful particularly depending on the thermal solution used as some do degrade a bit faster than others.)
