Got the update... so far so good.
Also started using Windows Defender for the first time, it seems pretty decent. No need for any other virus protection as long as you are not an idiot...
Also... does anyone know if it is possible for Cortana to search the D drive? this is where I keep all of my data, and searching for files always comes up blank since they are on D:

sure, like always. just open the Indexing options (dunno if thats the correct term, just tranlated it 1:1 from german) and the drives, folders which should be searched when using the search
standardsettings is always only the user folder, my documents if placed outside that folder and the startmenu iirc

Finally got around installing Win 10 since i will be getting VR and it seems like Win 10 has some benefits when it comes to that..
First 10 minutes; notice that you can't change the names on the shortcuts in Quick Access, what the hell? Its one of the most used features and they've made it worse.. idiots..
Gonna be fun to have several folders who has the same name but different content, especially for mods, gonna have like 10 folders named "trees" now and no way of knowing what the content is (meshes? textures? which game?) before clicking them to check. Also some long-ass names which could be shortened a lot and to make more sense. e.g now i will have to stick with "skryim - special edition" (meaning a folder pointing to .ini files for skyrim special edition) + same name for the root folder.
On the positive side, it seems to have thumbnails for .dds files built-in?! That came as a nice surprise, on win 7 i had to rely on third party progams for that, and it was buggy sometimes.

Unpin the Start menu icon, rename the shortcut and then right click and pin it again I'm guessing?
(Thus it's now using whatever you renamed it.)

Yes you can. In explorer, right click the short cut you want to add, choose 'Pin to quick access'.

https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-introduces-the-green-screen-of-death-for-windows-10-insider-previews
Microsoft is painting the Bluescreen green ("GSOD") for Insider builds of Windows 10 so users can more easily distinguish that it's a test environment they're on.
Weird change.
| Quote: |
...
This isn't a change that will affect all Windows 10 users, though. Hoekstra later clarified that the new GSOD will be limited only to Insider Preview builds, leaving the standard BSOD for general Windows 10 releases that are installed on non-Insider machines.
The reason for the change? Microsoft wants to make it easier to distinguish errors that cause Production devices to crash from those that affect the less stable Insider Preview releases.
Still, whether the Screen of Death is blue or green, the despair experienced by Windows users when their PCs crash will live on - so perhaps that change isn't quite so huge after all...
|
EDIT: Eh I guess that that one person downloading and installing some leaked iso of Win10 "just because it has a higher number." might have some benefit from this. (Or not, doubt they'd really look up any further info should the system crash and the screen is now green instead of blue.)

Yeah... I'm wondering which win crap store exclusive they'll "rig" in order to show a 10-15% improvement vs normal mode on some bullshit publicity stunt
Probably at CES which is coming right up in a few weeks

if your friend was on daz loader, and upgraded to win10, the win10 becomes legit. or at least that's what happened when it was free.

good. i've tested that CPUcores app being sold on steam, and despite my skepticism, it seems that there is still room to optimize OS resource usage in demanding games; because I saw significant CPU usage savings when running the CPUcores app in games that put a strain on the CPU, like mafia 3 and watch dogs 2.
for example, mafia 3, without the app, FPS would fluctuate within a 3-5 fps range, while with the app, the fluctuations were shortened to a less than 0.5fps.

Not too surprising, taking these current download gaming clients of Steam, Battle.Net, UPlay and Origin they all use Chromium and can use quite a bit of memory and CPU on their own.
UPlay and Steam (At least the beta of Steam.) made some pretty good improvements in this area lately and this is a bit less of a problem now (A few more processes running but less system usage.) whereas well Battle.Net and Origin there's been complaints since last years and little to nothing changing besides Origin getting worse with their new client overhaul.
(Both idle in the background and I get about a 8% constant CPU activity on a 6 core CPU running at about 4.2 Ghz and that's not too bad compared to people with older CPU's where they completely bottleneck the CPU usage.)
And then there's other software besides those but they make for a good example.
(That community manager on the Origin forums must have forwarded this particular problem to the engineering team* at least once a day since oh mid last year or so by now.)
(*Also called a recycle bin on PC.)

the origin problems are to do with the web stuff on the launcher. If you launch your games via right click and play/instead of opening the slide window and clicking play button you will use under 75mb memory and 0% cpu usage on said launcher.
Also if you use the store and all that stuff anyhow just close the client regardless with the X after starting your game ( in any manner via launcher ) and again the cpu and memory issues will cease. It is just to do with some shoddy way they leave shit running when doing the most simplistic calls on the origin browser/launcher.
