Guess I haven't played much this year...can only nominate

Dark Souls 3
Deus Ex Mankind Divided
XCOM 2

Mention Blood & Wine, since I don't consider it as a separate game, cause it isn't Razz

yeah, even though I beat the game without a single glory kill, it would have been nice to have an option to disable it. like 1990's difficulty setting or something.

assuming that DLC is allowed.. this is really tough, dammit...

1. Oxenfree
2. The Witcher 3: Blood and Wine
3. Dark Souls 3
4. Dishonored 2
5. Firewatch

Ultimately Oxenfree gets my top spot because it had the fewest things about it I had problems with. It was just a super good and interesting game. Witcher 3 DLC beats Dark Souls 3 for me purely for content and coherent world design, even though DS3 had better gameplay. Dishonored 2 would have been higher if the ending and the black/white chaos mechanic wasn't a massive shit in my face that spoiled the bulk of the fantastic experience I had with the game... and Firewatch comes in last because its the one id least likely go back to play again - but I still had one of the most memorable experiences of the year playing it... fantastic story AND delivery.

This was quite an awkward year for the bear. Between awful ports requiring the poor gamer to wait months before finding them in an acceptable state (thus postponing the playthrough Mad), and companies embracing the 4th letter of the alphabet like there's no tomorrow, I didn't manage to play all the games that I wanted to. Hell, it would be easier to write a "top backlog" list at this point Razz

But despite all the troubles of our hobby, I did find proper enjoyment and even some surprises (very, very rare, mind you).

1) Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, because even if it chose to play it disgustingly next-safe both in terms of narrative and gameplay, and poor Jensen never abandoned his droopy personality of a malfunctioning sexbot, the game provided all the free cyberporn and sandbox-y approach that my body was very much asking for.

2) DOOM, for single-handedly winning the 'how to shut my whore mouth in 10 seconds' award. I still cannot believe that id have managed to pull this off so beautifully after all the pseudo-disasters released in the last decade, and disgraceful pre-release marketing. Truly the surprise Cacodemon that you don't expect.

3) Dark Souls 3, specular place for specular Souls, fallen into the pit a bit with number II, but gloriously back with a game that doesn't reinvent any wheels (on the contrary, the wheels are so consumed that they're falling off), but at least manages to find its mojo and partially lost atmosphere.

4) Samorost 3, a joyful cathartic experience, for whoever loves to be completely immersed into weird fascinating natural environments, with the decadent beauty of old-school point 'n clicking.

5) XCOM 2, the proper sequel that XCOM deserved, technically flawed but with plenty of different panther or Rambo-like approaches, new customization capabilities, more variety, and not primarily designed for gamepads which is always a plus.

Special mentions to:
- The Witness (I need to solve more puzzles, said no one ever after finishing the game. In a very good way though)
- Obduction (The full-3D Myst that the world needed, from the glorious Cyan men themselves)
- Shardlight (Wadjet doing traditional good Wadjet things)
- Tyranny (not as epic as I was expecting, but still a solid Obsiride that I liked to be part of)
- Dragon's Dogma Dark Arisen (a flawed gem with awkward design decisions, yet extremely addictive and surprisingly, the port did not suck)
- Salt and Sanctuary (as close as a 2D Dark Souls can get from start to finish, in the best possible way)
- Grim Dawn [clicking and purging beasts intensifies]
- Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun (For not lying about the title at all, as Tactics are indeed present in the game)
- Titanfall 2 (I still feel dirty to put it here, but damn, it's earned its place)
- Mirror's Edge Catalyst (Things definitely turned out better than when I made that MW2-like concept years ago, Faith of relief)
- INSIDE (atmospheric platforming done right. Datblobbything can ultimately replace bubble wraps when it comes to satisfaction provided xD)
- Hyper Light Drifter (I finished it when it was locked at 30fps, and still liked it a lot, go figure)
- Stellaris (not the unforgettable space experience that I expected, but good enough to spend time, waiting for its DLCs)
- Carmageddon Max Damage (They killed Carma, you bastards! Thankfully Max is too tough for that, he's back from the dead)
- The Solus Project (Possibly the most atmospheric walking simulator out there, with all the pros and cons coming from...being what it is)

A lot of potentially good stuff is missing, as I haven't played Dishonored 2 yet, Total War Warhammer, Witcher 3's HoS/B&W, Hitman Netflix Season 1, Unravel, Battlefield 1, Ubisoft's Dogs and so on. Focused
Won't say anything about the disappointments, the list would be too long and painful Cool Face

I played a lot of games I really enjoyed, but hard to say if any of them truly shined brighter than the others. Some games I simply haven't played (Hyper Light Drifter, Dark Soul, Planet Coaster, Dishonored)

1 - Battlefield 1 (first place because I'll play it the longest)
2 - Doom
3 - WoW: Legion (rejoining my guildies for a solid 3 months was great fun)
4 - Tyranny (the game is unfinished but was such a joy)
5 - Watch Dogs 2 (better than it should have been)

Special mentions:
UnderRail - Released mid-december 2015. Would have been in 3rd place otherwise.
Grim Dawn - Very fun, but ultimately didn't QUITE hit the mark. Path of Exile remains my best in this regard.
Civ 6 - Very fun, but got bored very quickly. It brought new mechanics that I loved but which were underused. It needed to aim just a bit higher with those.
Deus Ex - Same as Tyranny, but I expected more out of Deus Ex. Tyranny also benefited from more interesting characters than Deus Ex, those were bland.
Witcher 3 - Blood & Wine, it was GREAT but I already had my fill of Witcher 3. It didn't give me something I didn't get from the main game, so it didn't leave a mark for me.
Overwatch - Fun but it didn't stick for me.

1. The Division (got a good bunch of hours into this, had great fun with the others, it's a rare occasion that I enjoy such a multiplayer grind title that much)
2. Deus Ex: Mankind Divided
3. Hitman
4. Stardew Valley
5. Watch Dogs 2

Honorary Mentions (no particular order):

- Firewatch (walking sim, but i really loved the presentation and humour)
- Dishonored 2 (poor port, great game)
- Forza Horizon 3 (if it ran great and would be on Steam, Top 5)
- Rise of the Tomb Raider (great continuation of the first game)
- Dying Light: The Following (really really good)
- No Man's Sky (for being the greatest fuck up in gaming history, showing off it could always get a bit worse)
- Mafia III (poor port, repetitive, great music)
- TES Skyrim SE (nice quality of life improvement)

I played alot of older games this year, if I even found time to play anything, so there is not alot of 2016 in there for me. I didnt even have the time to consider anything that would normally have been of interest to me like Dishonored 2. My backlog is so massive, I dont even need to buy or pirate anything anymore. Sad

1. Deus EX: MD
2. Stardew Valley
3. DOOM

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

1. Total War: Warhammer
2. The Wicher 3: Blood and Wine
3. Deus Ex: Mankind Divided
4. Doom
5. Tyranny

Haven't played many of the games released this year yet: Dishonored 2, Quantum Break, Dark Souls 3, Shadow Tactics are still on the waiting list, for example. For a while there Warhammer really sucked me in, like no other game this year, hence the place. Witcher addon was a nice change of pace from the base game - it showed they can tell stories in really different settings without sacrificing quality, which is nice. Still awed at how well done the whole thing is. Deus Ex was a slight dissapointment in some aspects, but the gameplay saved it. Haven't even finished Doom, but it was a blast for a while there, so it deserves to be mentioned. And finally, Tyranny is on the list solely because of terrific writing and world - I really hope they make a more substantial use of it in the future.

Honorary mentions:
-Witcher 3: I know it's a good game, but couldn't get into it and stopped about halfway through the story. Didn't like the progression system and playing as Geralt... personal preferences, meh.
-Overwatch: Really enjoying this but I can't really compare it to the others since it's a very different kind of game.
-Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun
-Darkest Dungeon
-Dragon's Dogma

Weird choice, since it was released in 2014. If he was gonna pick a Dragon Age game regardless of year, he should go with Dragon Age 2 instead.

Well I certainly don't think it should be there. It's DLC and it's not even Standalone, so it's "merely" part of the original game, thus, counts to the original release date.
