Part of the mechanics. How do you think it would work in a game where there is no mana for casting spells. Yes, it wouldn't work at all and would trivialize the whole game, lol.

I'll second that notion. This is the ONLY Early Access title I don't regret buying, and also the only one i've put so many hours into even prior to its release.

That said, they need to do some serious balancing of the whole "Darkest Dungeon" end game. I got through 90% of the game fine, got my parties leveled up to 6, geared up (both skills and equipment), and then promptly got my fucking ass handed to me with my A Team on my first run through the final dungeon. It was not a good day. Sad

Also worth checking out if you like these types of games - Hand of Fate. It has a very similar type of stifling dark tone to it (though not quite as serious, a bit more whimsical), and it's more akin to Batman than turn-based side scroller on the action parts, but it's epic nonetheless.

Not got that far bud, only level 3 parties here, but never have I enjoyed a game so much as this. Smile

I have heard that end game is ridiculous, so I do hope they fix that. I'm sure they will, as the Devs seem to throw out the updates on a regular basis.

Awesome, superb game though.

While the game-play can get fairly repetitive (after a 100 hours Very Happy ), I think the atmosphere is what really makes it shine. That narrator's earned his weight in gold!

As February wraps up, our internal discussions have been centered around the overall scope of the planned March 8th update, as well as the feedback we’ve been receiving from the community over the past few weeks. Based on those discussions, we’ve made some changes to our plans.

The original March 8th update was to include Town Events and The Antiquarian.
The ‘Antiquarian’ is the final name for the ‘Merchant’ class – a hero designed to help make your runs more lucrative (treasure bonuses), but also a bit riskier due to the class being underpowered in combat.
Town Events’ are designed to add variety to the Hamlet over the course of a campaign. Upon returning from an expedition, there is a chance for a thematic event to trigger in town – this functions akin to a deck of event cards.

As always, we have been constantly reading all the feedback and discussions that happen on our community boards. There’s been a good amount of chatter around the potential of Town Events, but there has also been major discussions about the current state of end game grind. We know that there are pain points around getting the jump from Veteran to Champion as well as some difficulty in maintaining forward momentum after losing high level parties in the Darkest Dungeon.

We have decided to delay Town Events, for two major reasons.
Community Input. Our community is incredible! Since starting up work on Town Events, we’ve been reading great suggestions and ideas. While the original plan would have been fine, there is increasing excitement around the feature and consequently, we want a little more time to make the system more robust. This will also allow us to look at implementing some of our community-generated ideas!
Grind. Losing high level parties can be a big hurdle to come back from, and this discourages some people from continuing with the late game. While we fully intend to keep the overall deadliness in the game, there are a couple things we are looking at and we feel that it is important to take some action on that front prior to introducing new unrelated features. Specifically, we are looking at making some higher level heroes available in the Stagecoach in certain conditions, as well as some other tweaks.

So what does this mean?

Our March 8th update will now consist of The Antiquarian and some changes to help alleviate the end game grind. Town Events will be delayed until a later date, and will benefit from the additional development time. We can’t give an exact timeframe just yet, but it will be our primary focus for development after the GDC (Game Development Conference) wraps up in March.

As always, we thank you for your support and feedback as we continue to improve and expand the Darkest Dungeon experience!

Undoubtedly, Darkest Dungeon has a lot of good things to offer, yet it also has some major flaws. I admit that I haven't finished the game because the grind has completely put me off. Yet I don't regret buying Darkest Dungeon at all and I consider that the 35 hours spent playing were more than worth its price tag. Basically, the first third of the game is very enjoyable, but redoing that part two more times on higher difficulties will bother anyone who has a problem with excessive grinding and RNG that costs you hours of playing, so I would not recommend Darkest Dungeon to those players. Leaving aside these issues, Darkest Dungeon is a game that excels in its presentation and atmosphere, while offering a very challenging combat system and great tactical possibilities in the way you build your party through the synergies between different classes.

update out ...stretch goals completed now Wink

Quote:
In today’s update, we’re thrilled to be adding over 40 different Town Events to the Hamlet. Upon returning from a quest, you may find things are not as you left them!

This update is also of special significance, as it completes the last of the Kickstarter game feature stretch goals. Huzzah! (Now we will move on to producing the Kickstarter physical goods.)

Changelist:
TOWN EVENTS - bonus recruits, extra supplies, facility closures, and more! Each event is presented with unique key art and commentary by the Narrator (Wayne June), and many are supported with additional in-game art. Be warned, The Hamlet is not as safe as it once was… (Note: you can adjust the frequence of Town Events in the OPTIONS menu, although they are mandatory for NG+)
Hamlet Polish: Various lighting FX and smoke added to the Hamlet.
Added a Default Party Order Button, find it on your Map in a dungeon!
Loot All - now keybound to SPACEBAR
Credits - Accessible from the options menu, we are proud to list thousands of backers who helped bring this project to life! Oh, and us too.
ESC and ENTER now dismisses Single Prompt Confirmation Windows (i.e. full inventory warning prompt)
Added confirm for when you don’t have any combat skills selected.
Jester “Finale” skill now hits with more punch!
Fixed riposte bugs with stats not applying from riposte skill.
Click to skip quirk-driven curio interaction bark.
Fix to estate not being saved when heroes are dismissed. (This will fix trinkets getting lost in town.)
Trap disarm tooltip in tray now takes difficulty into account to accurately display chance.
Fixed up tooltips for Russian localization
    Fix heirloom exchange bugs.
Fixed max not being accessible for transfer amounts.
Fixed not being able to close it when it’s open and you purchase in such a way that you end up with 0 heirlooms.
Adjusted 'Field Dressing' camping skill to fix bug
Fix to estate saving in provision screen resulting in lost money.
Fix to retreat outside of plot quest.
Fix to captured dead heroes (Crew, Cauldron, Siren) not dying after quest.
Activity log now will log stress heal with buff
Fixed Shambler corpses not being large
Fix to missing crit lines for Musketeer
Unequip trinket for hero who dies in retreat and add the trinket to raid finish inventory.
Fixed up incompatible quirks awarded at the end of a raid.
Bookshelves and Book stacks can now drop Journal Pages
The Town Crier can now be found enjoying the various stress relief facilities in the Hamlet once the town grows a bit
Added Temporary English text for all the new text for other Languages. (Localization is being worked and should be done soon).
Fixed Bug Quirk Gained from Facility Usage not Replacing Quirk correctly
    Various UI fixes

We want to extend a sincere thanks to all our players and fans for your support of Darkest Dungeon. While this update marks the end of our Kickstarter feature commitments, it’s certainly not the last update the game will receive! We’re honored to have found an audience for our game, and are looking forward to supporting and expanding it later in the year.

Until then, keep your torches lit, and ...beware the Vvulf!

Sales Breakdown

Darkest Dungeon is on sale on a variety of storefronts: Steam, PlayStation Network, GOG, Humble Store, Apple OSX App Store, CDP.pl, SoftClub, Nuuvem.

We were going to post a pie chart with sales breakdown by storefront, but the reality is that Steam accounts for 94% of our copies sold up to this point. Steam is obviously an enormously popular storefront, but there are a few other reasons for this lopsided number as well:
  • Early Access was done only on Steam, and launched February 3, 2015. Sales were extremely strong right off the bat–we did over 50,000 copies in 24 hours, which definitely resulted in a lot of stunned faces around our office.
  • Full release for PC and Mac occurred on January 19, 2016 and brought the game also to GOG.
  • PlayStation 4 and PS Vita versions only launched on September 27, 2016. Sales have been decent so far (approximately 50k copies worldwide), but the recent launch accounts for the reason why the platform only represents a tiny amount of our cumulative sales to date.
  • Crowdfunding was done via Kickstarter and Humble Widget and accounted for the first ~11k copies sold

I guess if I were an enthusiastic developer, I'd also want as many players to enjoy my game as possible, regardless of platform... so that may be a reason why they bother with consoles.

Remember, the real enemy is exclusives (and yes that should *also* apply to PC exclusives). If a game can work on several existing platforms, it's not very nice to have artificial contracts holding them back from release.

Darkest Dungeon is not a demanding game, you can play it on any old laptop. Everyone has a computer, it's 2016, so I don't agree that this is a serious reason to put effort into a PS4/Vita version. It sold peanuts, they would get more money if that effort went into an expansion for the Steam version, where a million of their happy customers are.

Today, we’re able to bring you the first reveal of that DLC with the introduction of a new character called The Fanatic.

As was teased previously with the Crimson Court poster and the tagline “The Blood! I must have the Blood!,” the DLC carries a Vampire or Parasite theme. The obvious addition to Darkest Dungeon, then, would be a Van Helsing-type vampire hunter that you could add to your party of heroes. “The community was quick to suggest this as well, but we at Red Hook always try to put a different spin on things, so we thought a great twist would be to introduce a vampire hunter, but have him be hunting you,” said Chris Bourassa, creative director at Red Hook.

The Fanatic is that vampire hunter. There’s a chance of him chasing and stalking your party if any one has contracted the “Crimson Curse” and steps foot into the dungeon. “The Fanatic will attempt to burn party members at the stake, improving his resilience by reading holy verses as the flames sear his victim,” Bourassa revealed. “Damaging his pyre will fill the Fanatic with zealous rage, emboldening his attacks and imbuing his warhammer with holy light. So it’s a (literal) damned if you do, damned if you don’t encounter!”

The Fanatic will be another of the “wandering bosses” like The Collector and The Shambler in Darkest Dungeon. A proper threat that you’ll want to avoid but will have a hard time doing so if he’s after you. Bourassa said that the team has been experimenting with custom audio cues that will let you know when he’s near, so perhaps you’ll have some warning at least.

As far as the visual design of The Fanatic goes, Bourassa told me he wanted to steer away from the classic vampire hunter tropes, like tall hats, gadgets, pouches, and crossbows. He’s more of a mad monk type of figure. “I imagine him as having gone rogue from the church, hunting the Crimson Court anywhere he can find them,” Bourassa said. “His scarred face gives the impression of having had a serious entanglement at some point in his past—perhaps that’s what finally drove him over the edge.”

I think I was annoyed that indie devs are losing time with a PS4 release when their playerbase is on the goddamn PC. Not every popular game needs to be ported to a gamepad-machine.

50k sales ... if a game sold a million on console and 50k on the PC, they would cry and cry and never release anything on PC again.

I agree that not every game needs to be on console. But this game which I own steam works perfectly fine with DS4.

Tides of Numenera however looks really consolefied and doesn't look like fun using a controller

Red Hook Studios revealed that they are planning to release Radiant Mode for Darkest Dungeon in early February, and that The Crimson Court DLC has been pushed by to April.

Radiant Mode, which was revealed back in December, aims to shorten the game’s length from 80 hours to around 40 hours by making tweaks to things such as the time it takes to build up your roster and foray into the Darkest Dungeon. Red Hook Studios also hopes to have a small public beta right before release, as they have done with previous updates.

They also revealed that the The Crimson Court DLC’s release has been pushed to April due to the work being done on the Radiant Mode update. Red Hook says a “significant amount of work” has already been completed on the DLC, and that they will reveal more about the The Crimson Court closer to its release.
