|
 |
Quote: | In short, we’re examining a game’s technical aspect, meaning that not only must the engine scale well on modern-day hardware, but the developer must also ensure that things like PC specific graphical features, PC technologies (like SLI and Crossfire) and PC controls are properly implemented.
Believe it or not, we had a lot of trouble picking only ten games. Yes yes, we got some really awful PC games in 2016 (like Dishonored 2 and Mafia III, however we also good some really stellar PC versions for a lot of triple-A games. Ubisoft’s STEEP performs great on the PC platform, as do Dead Rising 4, Overwatch, Killer Instict, Titanfall 2 and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. These games almost made it to our Top 10 list, proving that 2016 was actually a great year (at least regarding the tech state of PC games).
So withour further ado, here are our top 10 most optimized PC games of 2016:
10.) Rise of the Tomb Raider
9.) Forza Motorsport 6: APEX
8.) F1 2016
7.) Shadow Warrior 2
6.) Tom Clancy’s The Division
5.) Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst
4.) Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare
3.) Battlefield 1
2.) Gears of War 4
1.) DOOM |

Isn't Rise of the Tomb Raider the game that run like shit for months, overheating cards and with amazing stuttering in that survival DLC?

It did run like shit in some locations, but the article seems to be focusing on the games as they run today, including post-launch support. That's why Tomb Raider made the list and they give a mention to Deus Ex: Mankind Divided.
I dunno, I feel like a few of those games are quite a reach regarding excellent optimization.

Only ones on the list I played was Doom and Tomb raider and I'd say that Doom was the one that felt like it was well optimized... Then again, If I go by personal experience then Just Cause 3 was greatly optimized as well. Since that one ran for some mysterious reason great on my PC.

@tonizito Horizon 3 runs shit for a good amount of people. Especially those with seemingly better hardware than the rest.

imho SW2 should be in the first top 5 games..
RoTTR (nderpia game) is shit on AMD unlike the first game (amd's game) that worked fine on nvidia AND amd cards.
+ it's maxed out textures require a ridiculous amount of VRAM even @1080p and the game doesn't even look that good textures-wise..
1) Lenovo Legion 7 (AMD Ryzen 7 5800H, RTX 3080 16Gb, 32Gb DDR4, SSD 1TB +2TB
2) SFFPC (streaming via Moonlight+ Sunshine)

Optimized AAA games in 2016, almost an oxymoron
Not a bad list (for what it's worth), idtech 6 indeed is the highlight for me too, along with Frostbite 3-powered games as per usual. Flying Wild Hog's and Massive's engines generally offer a good quality/performance ratio as well.
Infinite Warfare on the other hand can have some issues because of the ancient Quake-3-on-steroids engine being pimped to hell and back, with 'next-gen' effects that can be taxing on older GPUs.
Similarly, Tomb Rambo 2 was pretty tough to digest for my system back then, with Lara eating memory chips for breakfast.

With an AMD card, RoTTR ran alright/average until one zone I can't remember the name of, at which point it ate a giant dick. After many, many patches they greatly improved performance and it does run quite well now.
SW2 is a game that I didn't really get why people found it so well optimized. I love that they added Nvidia's Multi-res technique and HDR, but when I look at the quality of the graphics vs performance, I'm not that impressed. It felt like performance was fine, but quality was a bit poor, even maxed out. I definitely don't think it's a bad port, I just found it to be a pretty average one. It just feels weird seeing it on the same list as BF1 and Doom.

Doom is probably the best optimized game I've ever played, with Vulkan I was getting 100+ fps at 1080p ultra/nightmare settings with a 1060, and almost never dropped below 60 fps at 1440p.

didnt gears of war 4 run like shit and have loads of problems?
i agree that doom ran super well, but.. i mean its an arena shooter with loads of small, enclosed zones, so id hardly expect it to be overly taxing anyway.

I think it was Gears of War: Anniversary Edition that was released as a complete mess.
It's true that arena shooter with small corridors aren't very taxing, but performance is also comparatively much higher than most games of that type. I reinstalled it to try the new SnapMaps and it's running between 120 to 144fps (capped). This is also why I don't really agree much with Shadow Warrior 2 being on that list, same type of game but it ran closer to 60 fps on the same setup.
Gears of War 4 ended up on this list for similar reasons. It doesn't look THAT good, they took the Xbox One version and slightly touched up the graphics, but it runs fast as fuck.

Yea, Doom was my surprise of the year too.
Not only because of the very fun gameplay.
But also how good the performance was, considering how relatively great the graphics looked.

But this time it still plays better on KB+mouse except for kick+jump attack or something
The only fail was these prompts..but once you learn the keys it's a really smooth experience.

A bit of a meaningless list imho, because it doesn't take into account the visual complexity of each game.
For example: Mirror's Edge is all made of plain surfaces and "rectangular" (for lack of a better word) geometry. Basically no vegetation or any other kind of dense animated models. Few characters on screen at the same time. No destructible environment.
Same with Doom: basically zero environment destructibility, not very complex fluids / shaders / vegetation, very static environments.
To me, it's way more impressive how well BF1 runs when considering it's visual complexity, rather than DooM, which I would expect to run well given it's way less complex visually.
