Outstanding direction in that trailer! Looks really, really ace, worthy of the tens and tens of millions invested in the project!

This could be a kickstarter video for a shitty Crytek indie shooter asking for 80000$ ! Laughing

As far as I understand as a newbie in these stuff from my research about Lumberyard it's based on CryEngine 3.8.1 and misses all features released by CryTek in next updates. Some of these are "NoMaps, Heightmap-Based Ambient Occlusion, Designer Tool UV Mapping, Character Attachment Merging, New Depth-of-Field Implementation, Improved Motion Blur and Volumetric Fog Quality, Improved SVOGI etc". The Amazon team did almost 1000 additions in Lumberyard some of which may include their own versions of the CryEngine tools.

Some big pluses for Lumberyard are the better network system and improved particles. It seems to have some "unity-alike" entity-component system which is better for new devs.
Minuses are it's still not clear if it will support DirectX 12 and/or Vulkan and as mentioned above the missing updates after version 3.8.1. And Lumberyard is currently in beta and probably has some more flaws from CryEngine 4+.

So now we have a game in alpha stage built on an engine in beta stage used mostly by amateur developers. Laughing I guess we will see how this will work out at earliest with the release of 3.0 which will probably happen no less than 6 months from now. Smile

Feel free to argue me on the above words. As I said I have little knowledge in development or engines but got interested in the transition from CryEngine to Lumberyard and googled around a bit. Rolling Eyes

No, dude, engine changes this deep in development are totally fine, this is going great! Don't listen to the gaysayers, this is ground-breaking stuff we are seeing!

It's the exact same baseline based on the same engine - they're simply implementing this Lumberyard version because of the online integration and cloud server technology.

CIG are not "switching engines" so much as integrating the good parts of another iteration of the same engine.

But trying to explain this to a bunch of haters who use ignorance to fuel their passionate naysaying is like telling a child to stop whining because its icecream was dropped.

It's kinda futile and you might as well wait until all the crying is over - so the bigger and better icecream can calm you down.

For anyone genuinely interested, there's a lot of good information in that thread.

Of course, it will kind of kill your "sky is falling" buzz - so you might want to avoid it, so you can keep spouting ignorant bullshit.

As some are exagerating the switch, you do seem to feel very comfortable at downplaying it as much.

Well, nobody has an idea what it will happen after this switch. On one side it seems logical to jump on a new engine when there are obvious big problems to alter it for Star Citizen. And the Lumberyard has the same architecture but more online oriented and user-friendly.
On the other side they wasted so many resources already trying to configure CryEngine and now its the development is almost back at the beginning with only some assets present (not that they showed us enormous or any content already). So everyone can be right or wrong now. I guess we will see some glimpses of what will happen at 3.0.

And by the way I read Lumberyard is multi-platform meaning it's stupidly easy to transfer any game to any console as long as it can run it. Will "The PC gaming Messiah" betray us and make SC for PS5 and next gen XBox? Reaction

Downplaying it how, exactly?

I'm just explaining precisely what implications exist. Nothing more, nothing less.

Again, it's not a new engine. They're using the same 3.7 baseline.

The new part is the online integration and cloud server technology. They've worked on this integration for about a year, and the work is all but done.

It's not rocket science - and the additional work has been minimal, because it's the SAME core engine.

Jebez, even their launcher is shit. Upgraded CPU so thought let's see if I can see some difference in the performance of the game... fricking launcher craps out our entire internet (yes even with limiting the download speed and disabling p2p). Fuck this shit Mad

Edit: So apperantly it is about the amount of connections it is making. It's strange since my torrent client makes more connections without ever screwing over the entire network. That being said: altering those settings manually did prevent it from nuking my network to a stand still. But... it is still lagging everything else on the network though.

Such a shame.. the new ships are exquisitely detailed, pointless but pretty - I think that probably sums up the whole demo right now.

In fact I think things are TOO detailed - when I seen clutter in my bunk, or boxes laid around my ship or hanger - I wonder why I can't interact with them, or why I left that clutter there. Why did I leave a book in my quarters for example).

If you can't interact with an object that supposedly belongs to you in this kind of game - it is extraneous and probably shouldn't be there.

I think it's an overlook. You should inform Chris Roberts that his devs are doing slack job and you can't properly immers yourself in the grand world of Star Citizen. Why would you be able to venture through endless corridors of space station/cities/planets when you can't interact with smallest details of it.

Just tried the latest build. Deleted again, will try again next patch!

Does everyone see this horrible performance? My system sits quietly but the games fps varies so much from Hanger / Starport / Space. It's painful to play right now

My performance is 60+ FPS more or less constant except for the PU, where performance is bottlenecked by the crappy CryEngine netcode.

If you want to try the PU with good performance:

http://i.imgur.com/YuTLWRU.png

Obviously, you still need a decent rig - and though the game isn't optimised yet, it's not meant for anything but powerful PCs.

That said, it's still in alpha - and there are lots of issues. I never played alphas on a serious level, because I understand they're essentially not going to be satisfying.

So, I wouldn't recommend playing this "for fun" - for a long time. A lot of people seem to disagree and are having tons of fun in the PU - but I don't really get that. I hate playing with bugs, crashes and glitches.

Thanks for the link, i'll wait till 3.0 before trying again though.

To be fair i didn't give it much time, i didn't pull up the FPS to see what i was getting but i didn't need to! My rig is in my sig, so i'm not slow Smile I set graphics to High and left it at that. Strange that my system was silent while the game struggled

Your rig is quite similar to mine, so you should be getting smooth performance in Arena Commander, Hangar and Star Marine for sure.
