SH5 with Wolves of Steel mod is supposedly pretty good, though I haven't tried it myself.

I find myself loving the IDEA of these games more than actually playing them.

I've never tried any of the SH games. Which one would you recommend, any mods?

Not a ship/sub fan but you never know if you don't try Razz

Well sh3 is the original gem really with mods is nice, but after a long painful run the fan mod base guys at subsim.com managed to bring sh5 into shape. There is a one stop install for sh5 and one of 3 I think now large mods you can install Wolves of Steel is the prefered these days. There is of course a need to read the steps correctly.

It used to be they don't deal much with the steam version of the game either so keep that in mind. Although I did read other mnth that someone managed to sort a fix out for steam version regarding intsalling mods.

Steam version does not support Generic Patcher and therefore this expansion too.
You'll find on these pages a link for a workaround but note that the procedure can be rather advanced for some users.

The torpedos are pretty strong.. apparently strong enough to launch an entire ship into the air @ 4.20.
Otherwise looks like a nice game, but not a fan of the easy mode abstractions. i'm sure the majority of players are too lazy to use a hydrophone regardless.

Recommending SH5? Blasphemy, even with mods.

My personal favorite I think is SH4 Operation Monsun, which is basically the SH3 content and then some, in the newer engine.
As much as I like GWX (and SH3 Commander), there's a lot of issues in regards to spotting and the horizon line in SH3 that drive me mad.

Ultimately you can't go wrong with SH3/4 or even 5 (if you can handle the lack of dynamic campaign). Wish I had time to play this shit.

Damn, SH5 has no campaign? I bought it years ago but stopped playing because I had to upgrade my GPU since the one I had barely ran the game. Then never played it because of my Steam library.

Disappointed to say the least since I put in soo many hours in SH4.

He is being picky, just go to subsim forums and see what mod and silent hunter version is most focused on instead right?

sh4 btw was ok but it was mainly all to do with usa submarine stuff, it came with one or two models of the german subs ( half baked ) for the missions you were in or something like that. SH4 was pretty much dropped from the modding scene for most part due to it not being relevant with the ww2 english/german naval warfare aspects that people really wanted over the usa ones.

I can see the demand, but I am a veteran of the US Navy (stationed on the USS Eisenhower, an aircraft carrier) and I actually loved SH4 as one rarely sees any US-themed naval wargames, especially recently. But, I am looking forward to trying this one out when I get done with a couple of games I am working on.

It has a campaign, just not like the SH3/4 sadly.

If you already own it, I don't think it'd hurt to play it, then you can make your own decision about it.

They had me at "Next-gen Water" because that is what I am looking for in new games.

When I look at the water in "current gen" games, I am almost appalled by how ugly it looks and then ...

wtf?

Haha! It's time to resume the stealthy skeptical 4-stroke engines v2.0, proceed at near-crush depth and speed of 6 knots, hoping to remain unseen when the enemy's Dreamcrushers pass by.

Boy, he parked that thing close enough that he could have hopped aboard for some tea and crumpets before sinking them. Seriously don't think the torpedoes would have even armed at that distance.

The whole side-cut view jumping into first person view is cool, but I hope managing the crew doesn't become too much of a chore. I fully expect there to be a button to hit that makes everyone drop what they are doing and go to the correct station without me having to handhold their way there, or it's going to be awfully time consuming.

This trailer is a few months old i think, the devs already told it will be/was fixed. It would be idiotic to do a sim and then do that kind of shit. Or they could add a sound effect of torpedo bouncing off the ship Laughing
