I absolutely agree about the res of video - I think that shows up everything that is currently wrong with VR - I don't personally care how good room scale is, or how good the controllers are if the visuals are like your eyes have suddenly become 1990's webcams.
I'm brimming with confidence that 2017 is going to hold a proper upgrade for VR - not the mythical 8k, but I believe that there will be a model made by someone with proper camera tracking and 4k per eye - which i think will make a big difference.

Even if they got a resolution like this thing has (http://www.gearbest.com/pc-headset/pp_423476.html?wid=21 )
and i had the hardware to run it at the target FPS (if a screen was capable to do that at that resolution), i would jump onboard.
I hope that something along those lines comes out sooner rather than later.
I would certainly be willing to dump a chunk of money into something with that sort of resolution.
Something with a 210 degree view would be awesome sauce too but that probably would require 2 dedicated screens for each eye and we are for sure a long ways out from that.
1 stripe purple belt in JiuJitsu (good grief this takes FOREVER hahah)
Swinging a real baseball bat or golf club in VR.. nothing could possibly go wrong..
Not only that. That things is just screaming to be flung across the room to smash to pieces on the wall because someone didn't attach it securely or correctly.

Seems HTC hopes for some free news footage involving random accidents to "advertise" the Vive the way the Wii got similar news footage with all the wrecked TVs
I sold mine, as much as i really enjoyed the few content thats available, it's just not enough for me to keep it right now.
i'll probably come back to VR once it's matured a bit more, the tech by itself is very worth it, but the current state of things not so much, it was still a great experience as an early adoptor tho.
Just a bit too expensive for what you can really do with it right now tbh.
Vive and Rift have begun the consumer VR mission.. but they're not going to finish it any time soon. They'll draw their 'premium' products out as much as possible before looking at developing anything.
Meanwhile, other companies more interested in delivering a working, improved product will very likely do well. I'm interested in this new one with eyetracking that just came out, FOVE.

February 27, 2017 - LG Electronics will unveil its first VR HMD prototype at this year's GDC in San Francisco, CA. Being shown in Valve's GDC booth, the LG HMD prototype is designed to deliver a high fidelity, next generation VR experience.
During the show, LG will be meeting with developers to collect feedback and impressions as part of its effort to define the first commercial units. Pricing, launch dates, and territories will be announced at a later date.

This will need to be a minimum 1440p display to be any use, and it will somehow need to come in at a similar price to the existing units. Preferably lower than £500, and still be considered a high-quality HMD, otherwise I hate to say it, but VR will die a very premature death, which would be catastrophic.
Facebook have totally fucked up the VR market, seeing as they thought money could just solve all problems. I'm not saying Zenimax are innocent, nor the way the whole thing is being handled is of any use to the consumer. But Facebook installed that sense of elitism that Oculus simply didn't need to be successful. And of course, it hasn't been successful in any meaningful way.

oculus only dies if they cling onto their retarded facebook cancer platform
khronos, the open standards body, just announced OpenXR to be the opengl/directx equivalent of vr APIs, with valve and oculus is on board
i expect it'll likely be closely based on steamvr tech because, let's face it, it's the most complete vr api out there with built in physical bounds chaperone, multi-application compositor and arbitrary controller and hmd support
hopefully within a year or two that's what most hmds will target
After owning both VIVE and PSVR i`m not going to spend a single penny on VR until it`s more mature, if LG brings one out with 4k per eye and no GOD DAMN WIRES... Ah, i dream
I sincerely hope so, I can't see Oculus making an Rift 2.0 with all that shit ongoing (Zenimax) and with Facebook who just did NOTHING other than taking $$$ from the sales.
Also HTC is unfortunately a dead company now.
Sony seems to be the only successful company with their PSVR sales approaching 1M units for now, but of course they won't bother about PC gamers.
Maybe I should wait for the PS5 to finally have my flawless VR headset. (because PSVR sux as well, don't be fooled by the sales)

Even if HTC did die, they could find another partner no problems, lets see how well Valve's rumored major VR titles turn out before calling it dead in the water.
I don't think 4k is a requirement. The number of pixels means fuck all if the SDE is still there, because SDE doesn't just mean a grid, it means you can still see the individual pixels.
I read somewhere that a high density display was being worked on. That's WAY more important, as it would virtually eliminate every problem with VR in one go. IF they can make a minimum 1440p screen with double the DPI, VR will be a very nice experience indeed, without the need for superpowered video cards.

Not really, a huge problem for VR is the FOV, or in other words, how much of what you can see is a screen, and how much is a nothingness.
Personally I would much rather higher FOV then higher pixel density.
Pixel density is the only thing holding VR back from being a viable display replacement. FOV on the Rift, at least, was never a concern (for me anyway - DayDreram and GearVR are totally different, they have terrible FOV, but they're not designed to be anything other than a phone viewfinder)
If I had the same VR tech with a wider FOV - it would still look like crap.

Pixel density sounds better. Both would be ideal, but that's a while off. Trying to focus on things in VR is like trying to focus on things in a dream - it doesn't work. And in some games it can be pretty annoying.
Have you adjusted supersampling to 1.6+? its a huge improvement and shows increasing the resolution of the headset isn't as needed as once thought, although still important.

In terms of real life vision vs VR in Oculus/Vive, VR is very small.
FOV would make a bigger difference then you might think.
Better FOV (currently terrible and very immersion breaking, like you are looking through binoculars) + lighter and smaller headset are the most important aspects imo.. For me my entire nose is inside the headset, i find it rather uncomfortable to have to breath inside it.. Feels quite idiotic to wear it, like something that belongs in the early 90's and not in 2017.
FOV is definitely something to improve... but I still say that pixel density is more important. After all, it doesn't matter how big your FOV is if everything looks like Lego through a net curtain. Supersampling helps for close up images, but does absolutely nothing for anything in the distance, which is my main complaint - playing any driving game with distance is very difficult, as you have to wait until you're much closer to opposition cars before you know what they're actually doing. Project Cars was a mess of grey pixels, on straight tracks, for example. Dirt Rally was a much better looking example as you don't have many straight sections, so everything looks better.
I tried 2 Rift's for extensive amounts of time and with varying levels of supersampling, and I absolutely guarantee that SDE AND Pixel density are the biggest things holding it back from being an awesome experience. Closely followed by physical resolution and FOV. Like I said, I don't believe a 4k screen will be of any use if the density isn't there.
IF they just made 4k panels, but a little larger, and used a higher lens magnification, you would have almost the exact same issue as you do now. 2k panels with a minimum 50% more density would be a great way to keep VR technical requirements low, and increase graphical fidelity. And keep at least the same FOV, if not more, of course. I don't think we'll ever get the mythical 180º range, but as long as it doesn't go lower, I think it'll work fine.

I just hope Valve plan to hire HTC Vive dev team if (when) HTC will eventually close.
And I am no Oculus fanboy just an Oculus owner (and early believer) and yet still pleased with it but hate how things turned out...
All I want now is a sequel device with better lenses and display (wireless while I am at it)
Whoever make it, I don't care.
