So i've finished the game in a bit more than 7h on NORMAL...
PROS:
-Jumpscare galore! (Damn you, 2nd boss!)
-Being able to dodge most of the enemies or bait them so you can go through their sides (Unless, ofcourse, one normal enemy blocks your path for the lulz)
-BRUTALITIES (Be it to bosses or cutscenes)
-Some environments
-Some enemy designs
-THE PROTAGONIST CAN TALK!!!....
CONS:
-...BUT the protagonist's face can't be seen AT ALL... Except a TINY moment at the VERY END OF THE GAME, but it's a bit dark and you need to screenshot it and zoom in the fuck out.
-Unskippable cutscenes
-Lack of ammo. Yep, you don't get ammo from enemies, so it's wise to save the ammo and dodge
-Bosses. The huge ammo wasters, and trolling quotes!
-The story is AWFUL and has no relation to the previous games.
- Spoiler: | Where is the trolling son?..There's no signs of him after the circus-like scene. Did he died?, did he ran away just to star a RE8? |
-Game lenght but it's what you expected, this game's more of a "Buy VR Glasses and use them with the game".. "The VR experience!" game than a RE game.
- The ending is awful... Spoiler: | "I'm Redfield!" | and that's it
Can't give it a score like other times, more like "Watch the game on youtube or just don't care about it, go do something else"

Guess you missed some of the late-game documents DV2, they do explain a bit more about that one that got away and what it was doing.
(The "newspaper" or well "sales advert" during the end credits had a ton of story info too, not exactly the easiest to read however unless you record or screenshot it I suppose.)
This is also much of where the connection to previous RE games show up though there's other stuff too like the end cutscene and some other references here and there, backstories for certain characters too.
(Story itself is a bit ehh and they really had to re-use every single fucking major puzzle piece and inventory item - valve handle and crank both. - from the early RE trio games, ha ha.)
As for ammo I disagree a "little" bit about that, enemies might not drop it but there's dozens of shotgun shells, hundreds of pistol bullets, several hundred SMG rounds, about a thousand or so flame fuel and a dozen or so grenade rounds (Both types.) not counting what you can craft and enhance yourself.
(Some 10 magnum bullets too, probably more that I missed, they do hide a lot of stuff.)
Even the Madhouse mode difficulty provides you with quite a bit of ammo along with more crafting materials and some new birdhouse cages for upgrades for damage and defense.
(Something like 30+ or so herbs and when combined with the chem and chem+ which is found almost everywhere that's a crap-ton of medic bottles should you focus on those, which admittedly is somewhat needed whenever something takes your foot off again heh.)
Definitively wasn't too much of a fan of Mr hillbilly quotes and Ms shitcock though, memes and swearwords while trying to have a serious boss fight or a couple? yeah.
Protagonist doesn't even have a face (Well that's for the body awareness thing without the head bit of the model clipping through the camera really.) though it can be seen in some of the pre-release material.
EDIT: And the game could have been longer but eh it was fun for what it was, 60 full price though eh maybe not quite worth that but there were discounts on various sites and CPY actually got done with Denuvo pretty quickly, might hold up for future games too maybe although I'd imagine they're re-designing the DRM a bit now as seems to have been somewhat confirmed already from what people found in the "Sniper" Ghost Warrior 3 beta.
EDIT: As for munitions availability that said even if there is ammo to be found by crouching and looking under things or OD'ing on suspicious yellow pills one could also set the game to the easiest difficulty, rush through it in under 4 hours probably with plenty of time to spare to unlock a certain something and combat gets a bit less problematic, keep a steady supply of health items though and don't forget about the bigger guns for the set piece boss battle sequences.
Though playing through a near completely identical experience just to rush it to get a certain unlock isn't exactly fun unless you're going for 100% achievements or some such.
(The knife isn't too bad either but the way you move and aim - probably more so with a controller. - makes precision attacks and dodging a bit more problematic for up close melee combat against various things.)

People says it's codecs related, and deleting various codec packs you have installed like K-Lite solves it, while other say use CodecTweakTool to disable them.
I haven't found any of the codec packs they mentioned on my PC, and disabling using the above tool doesn't work.
If I bought the game I'd have been pissed, but since I d/l it free of charge, I'm only bummed. |
Did you do some customization of Windows? The OS (Win7 and up, probably Vista too not that anyone uses that any more.) has need of some core codecs in the media player content which for some reason can be uninstalled, some codec in Internet Explorer too if you removed that which you might have to re-add if so.
(Well some and some reason, there are uses for a lighter OS install but you don't really gain much by uninstalling MP and IE and you don't have to actually use them directly, OS just needs those codec files.)
K-Lite might be able to take over and handle playback if you let it by I forgot exactly how the various filters for that worked but a exception/whitelist for the game exe might do but it could end up taking audio and other stuff too which might cause problems.
EDIT: That or a older processor model, I don't think they've added in support for CPU's lacking (Partial? full?) SSE4.1 support yet.
(Wouldn't expect there to be any major performance decreases but I guess the compiler they used makes use of them so it's some work to add in support for older CPU's or some of the new-ish AMD CPU's too which got affected by this as well.)

You should still be pissed that you can't get a modern game running on a modern PC
Kidding aside, kinda tough to help, knowing that most people use third party tools to disable this and that in their OS, which just doesn't work like it used to in win xp/win7 days. You broke something somewhere. the tough part is now finding how and what.

it's probably windows media player or internet explorer related like jbeckman said. you don't need third party tools to disable those.

Is blocking a melee attack with your hands really effective, or you take damage (less) anyway?
No time to play YET, just watching some bits of info here and there.

You take damage, but it's worth using it anyway. If you finish the game you get an item that you can have in your inventory to boost block effectiveness.
I'd recommend you to stay away from any video materials if you plan on playing this game. It's short and for a good part it's pretty intensive and if you are aware of certain situations you'll miss part of the fun.

This game scares the crap out of me. Must be getting soft in my old age.
Surely playing this shit in VR is going to give some poor bugger a heart attack.

So you basically take less damage.
Yeah, I was staying away from spoilers already, thanks for advice (I don't see how can one enjoy this game unless being experienced first hand), but i just had a peek at the video posted above and saw the melee version initiative.

Compare to the games after RE 4, this one is like a fucking masterpiece.
Took me 8 hours to finish it. Will probably buy on next sale.
By the way what happens at mid-end game if you go with;
Spoiler: | Zoe? I cured Mia but i don't know what happens if you cure Zoe. |
And our character looks and sounds a lot like Leo. Is it him?

This is a gaming miracle, the resident Lazarus that comes to life again after being lobotomized by bro-opsis, michaelbayness, doritosis and derp fever.
All hope seemed to be lost, but I'll be damned, it's great to be positively surprised for once. A cpyride that I savoured like fine wine for 11h, combining the immersion and focused structure of an advanced walking simulator on steroids with proper level design, exploration, brilliant rotten atmosphere, puzzles and pew pew throughout a decaying fascinating setting.
It really felt like Resident Evil again to me (at last!), despite the radical changes and...against all odds. There's the good ol' inventory management, multilayered levels designed to be meticulously explored, deviant boss battles and all the other familiar resigoodies. The demo that was released on Steam was just a harmless appetizer, and a bit misleading, the full game definitely has a more classic/defined structure reminiscent of the series. It's polished too, with the minimal elegant HUD, solid visuals (minus some low-res textures here and there), great attention to details (including all the animations), alright optimization for once and excellent creepy sound design.
It's definitely not a flawless experience though. After the promising start, the story unfortunately entered the cheesy standard oriental horror territory - although to be honest, none of the RE games have a genuinely well written story so one could say we're sticking to the formula here too. The gameplay itself suffered from a similar problem, progressively abandoning the grim survival horror and turning into a linear shooter near the end, with plenty of ammo/first aids available and copypasta enemies. Scripts in general could have been less invasive and cinederpmatic, but they didn't feel out of the place..mostly.
Spoiler: | With the ending being particularly disappointing, and the final boss that was resolved through a setpiece, with the tone shifting to some kind of preachy family happy hour. Shame. I was hoping for something..darker instead |
Still, all this didn't tarnish the final experience, for me it's easily the best Resident Evil since the classic trilogy, and one of the best and most surprising reboo attempts of the last few years along with Doom. 8+/10, well done Capcom (ew, feels strange to say it). Now...please keep doing this and never go back to the RE6-like aberrations, but don't turn the franchise into a shooter either. I know that you want to!

It was a good game, but it really doesn't do the horror thing for me at all.
First problem, and this is a reiteration from what I've said here before, was the guns. When you give me the tools to overcome the "monsters" I go Rambo mode and just fuck things up. Headshot after headshot like I was back to playing Counterstrike. When I see an enemy it's more like "come at me bro, I dare you" rather than "oh shit oh shit oh shit".
The second problem is that the "monsters" were just infected people, pretty talkative ones at that. The introduction sequence at the table pretty much turned the horror switch off for every character included in the scene. In what I consider better horror games ( Amnesia TTD ), the encounter structure is such that you don't really get to see the baddies much at all unless you meta-game and willfully go and at look them. The mystery compounds the horror.
Lastly, the game tasted too Japanese for me. Cultural influence is inevitable, I guess.

Good to hear. I played a bit and just exited the three headed dog door. Playing without the hud is just awesome. Love how you see your whole body, your char has all these environmental body animations, like pressing hands against the wall when you get to close to it.
I really like how well they balanced the interplay between gameplay and actual cinematic viscerality. Boss fights play out mechanically as any boss fight in another game, but what you see on screen looks like it's almost a scripted cinematic scene. they pulled that of really well.
Sure, it has some of that asian culture "lost in translation" cheese where as a westerner I don't know if they are being comical or just appearing comical, especially the intro cutscene when you start up the game. that one was laughably bad
I'm playing with a derpad, so the challenge is okay. getting headshots is not easy, so no complaints in the challenge department yet. supplies so far are ok for me, I have run out of bullets a few times.

Just started playing this again, thought I had the AI for Jack nailed down and predicted. I'd killed him in the main room and thought he'd stay away long enough for me to get the broken shotgun. Upon exiting the lounge the fucker walks right into the doorway i'm in with a shit eating grin on his face "there's my Ethan". I fucking shit it.
