Looks like this is the sequel, being released "Spring 2017".
I'd love for this to be a one off purchase like The Hunter: Primal, but I bet they're going right back to their old subscription model of subscribe to play + $$$$ for gear and bullets.
Also, beta signup is available at their site in the top right highlighted in orange - http://callofthewild.thehunter.com/
Beta starts on December 6th, 2016.
I can never be free, because the shackles I wear can't be touched or be seen.

It's not like this game is really a simulation anyways, with those exp-rewards popping up or object-highlighting.

Hope its close to the hunter right now really when its released, if they dumb it down ill be done with it, or stick to the older one if they keep developing on it. It is actually really nice if played properly that game. A good relaxer and almost theraputical gameplay.

Yeah out on Steam now, guessing they didn't use any complicated DRM methods on the game. |
Yer grabbing it now to test, watching a stream as well but cant get feel for it like that. I see lots of floaty indications etc and icons blah blah, I hope that is just the initial tutorial stuff and mission bits for first time playing. Or at least have game modes where you have to look for the tracks etc yourself giving you much more xp for doing so.

Lots of little tutorial messages early on but they can be disabled, you can also disable some of the highlighting and other helpers though all in all the game is more of a arcade hunting game than a simulation though you can't run around shooting like with Activision and their idea of hunting with the Cabela license.
There's a mission system as well but that can be disabled too though it walks you through some of the game mechanics so it's useful at least early on until you gain some money (From hunting, better kills give more cash such as clean and quick kills to the vitals.) and you can also unlock little cottages for fast travel though initially you will have to walk, a lot.
Game also offers some perk system and skills such as being able to gather more info from tracks you discover or gaining some more health which you can lose either from fall damage or from animal attacks or just getting trampled by one.
Not too many different types of animals so far, coyotes, bison and then there's elk and deer plus I think there might be black bears too, could be more though plus some smaller game such as rabbits or squirrels and birds.
There's four DLC going by SteamDB so it's possible they'll expand with more game areas with different wildlife though it could be anything from outfits to different weapons although there's a decent enough selection in the game already including some different ammunition types.
Not sure how it can compare with the F2P game, guessing that has more content although it does rely somewhat on in-game purchases.
Game isn't that big though in terms of file size so with a release already available that does make it easy to just download and iso-demo it and check it out that way.
EDIT: Oh and as it's using a updated version of the Avalanche engine the performance is a bit so-so in some of the more detailed parts of the game world such as denser forests with a lot of foliage and other details, looks good but definitively needs some pretty good hardware though you do have a decent amount of settings to adjust and there's some extra stuff in the config file too such as disabling the corner darkening or "vignette" effect as it's called. (That particular one is more of a personal choice of preference though, shouldn't cause any noticeable impact on overall performance.)
Think this is physically based too updating it a bit further from how the engine worked in Just Cause 3 and going by some of the Steam reviews there's a chance of bugs such as falling through the terrain or visual glitches, I didn't notice anything like that so far but the Steam screenshots have some bugs like that already so it's definitively there.
EDIT: Well it's not exactly a review but yeah, they're far as I would call it at least trying for some middle ground between realism and arcade hunting experience where you do have to account for sound, visibility and things like wind but there's a variety of visual helpers and I guess the bullet physics might be a bit simplified too.
Also pretty demanding, looks good but definitively needs a bit extra in terms of PC hardware or there will be performance drops depending on where in the game you are, might not be as bad in more open areas like fields but forests and the like could be more difficult.
And going by the Steam community there's a variety of bugs such as the ever popular falling through the game terrain and into the infinite void.
(Though then again Steam reviews, one of them even called it the Call of Duty of hunting games heh well it's not a full sim but it's not Cabela Dangerous Hunts either.)

Apparently, unless you are using a controller you can't vary your speed of movement. This results in the same amount of noise generated while prone/crouched as standing. Whereas if you're using a controller, you can move slower/faster depending on how far you push the derp-stick, thereby generating far less noise. Kind of like the system the modern Metal Gear Solid uses.
People have been bringing the issue up, and Steam mods have been locking all the threads claiming it's "working as intended".
For a PC exclusive release it's pretty clear where their priorities actually are. Additionally, they seem to have fixed fuck all from the "closed beta" last month - seeing fit to use it as a marketing gimmick rather than an actual testbed, surprise surprise.

Analogue movement isn't anything new but yeah I did read that sound is the same regardless of if the player is walking uprights, crouching or even when prone despite crouching and being prone resulting in much slower movement.
That would explain a few things whenever I tried getting closer to a animal and it still detects me, thought I was spotted but I guess it was actually the sound giving me away due to this issue.
(More so with a keyboard where you can't control the movement rate like you can with a analogue controller.)
The number of negative reviews has also increased a bit now for the overall Steam rating for the game with complaints ranging from performance issues to glitches with the UI, crashes and other problems so the game could probably have done with some more testing.

Crap game, walking 90% of the time and walking is one of the worst things about the game. Doesn't feel good at all.
When you prone u go through the earth sometimes. Countless bugs etc.
All in all avoid this crap not even worth pirated.

Hello Hunters,
Here is another update from our side as we address the issues that you mention and report.
Once more we want to say thank you for your support, reporting these issues to us and of course for playing theHunter: Call of the Wild. It’s great to see the wonderful screenshots, videos and achievements from the community and we are working on solutions to improve the game and performance for our players.
Next to the smaller updates from today and yesterday, there is a bigger patch on its way. We can’t give you a final release date yet as testing is still in progress but we plan to release it very soon.
Quote: |
Today’s update includes:
Fix for “Invite to game” feature on Steam that would ultimately lead to a crash
Crash fix for hovering over specific icons in the map
Crash fix for ragdoll synchronization for spawned animals
Disabled joining friends in multiplayer games when the game is not running
Miscellaneous crash fixes
|
Additionally, there is a partial fix for joining friends in multiplayer. As long as the game is running, you will be able to join a friend’s game via the Steam functionality. Please make sure your friends have the game running when sending invites to play via Steam.
If you don’t have the game running and join a game after the update, you will only start the game.
We are also working together with AMD to investigate and fix any hardware related issues that were reported by our players.
And finally, there are work-around solutions to some problems until we can fix them for good:
Keybindings
You can manually adjust your keybindings outside of the game by doing the following:
Disable cloud saving on Steam (Properties -> Updates -> Untick Steam Cloud Synchronization)
Go to Documents\Avalanche Studios\theHunter Call of the Wild\Saves open your save folder
Open “keymap.json” with a text editor of your choice (e.g. Notepad)
Manually adjust keybindings
Save file and start the game (keeping cloud save disabled until you have started it once)
Return to Game from Settings menu
Hovering over any of the main menu icons on the left side of the screen and then pressing ESC will return you to the game.
Thanks again and happy hunting!
Stefan
