Xseed actually tried to get it according to one of their devs but lost probably cause NISA can port to pc and they can't (they only translate best they can do is polish up old pc ports) well good for us i guess.

What's the upgrade/build system like? Just linear, or is there some depth or more to it? For instance, Tales always had fairly nice unique mechanics as far as abilities and bonuses go.

https://techraptor.net/content/walking-path-legends-interview-nihon-falcom-president-toshihiro-kondo
Quote:
TR: It’s been said that Ys VIII‘s PS4 release was made to target the West, though it and a few other “modern” Falcom titles are all receiving PC ports lately. Has Falcom been actively pursuing PC versions for more recent releases in the West?
TK: We have no hesitation about releasing games on Steam. Rather, given that we don’t have a large staff, we mainly have to rely [on] partners to help us realize a PC port. When we first started releasing games on Steam, we were initially unsure of whether or not players would want to play our older games. However, as we gradually released games on Steam and saw the very positive reaction that was much greater than we expected, we feel like we want all of our games that come out to [release] on Steam.4

TR: Though, speaking of a “gap” (barrier?) between Japanese and western audiences, have there been any moments where the differences in reactions to titles like Ys VIII between the West and Japan have surprised you?
TK: I think what has surprised me the most is that fans’ reactions to many things is actually pretty consistent across all regions. I had originally thought that since players in North America had different things they cared about in games that what they would be focusing on in the games would be very different, however, they actually care about the same things like the gameplay, the controls, the story and the characters and their thoughts on these things align very much with the Japanese players.

TR: Finally, it’s not hard to notice that Ys VIII draws a lot from the series’ history, with Adol even wielding his sword from the ending of the as-of-yet unlocalized Ys V for Ys VIII‘s opening minutes. Does Falcom currently have any plans to bring any previously untranslated titles from Ys or the company’s other currently established franchises in the West, to the West?
TK: I can’t promise that Ys V will be the next Ys game that we release, but we definitely want to remake it. The original game design document for Ys V, which came out for the Super Famicon is still in the Falcom office and it turns out that a lot of really cool ideas were left out of the completed version. We’d like to look at these things that were missing and try to incorporate them into a remake. Sure enough, the number of fans in Japan and North America asking for a remake are about the same and we really want to realize this.
As we put our all into each and every game that we make, we would love for everyone to be able to play them all. Steam is a great platform in that regard, and, as I’ve said, we were very surprised to the positive reaction of our games on Steam and want to continue looking into it.

Wouldn't surprise me if this was good, the last Ys i played on PSP was really good. It would be nice if the game didn't look quite so generic, but it will probably hold up for gameplay/story etc.
edit: derp, i'm thinking of falcom's Trails of Nayuta which was fan translated for PSP.

From what I've read so far the game is pretty good for a more modern Ys JRPG though NISA has a pretty rough English localization with the demo being really poor in particular but they've since improved on it further though it's still not great but well it's better than calling the first boss a vase. (Herald of Sorrow is a hell of a lot better than Shivering Vase, though apparently the correct translation would be something like Jaws of Terror. Razz )

Yeah it was pretty rough supposedly, SteamDB has shown updates for the game for a while now but since it's not released it's impossible to say if those have been new beta builds but the game sounds like it would have needed some more work both in terms of localization and the PC port quality itself.

PC Release Delay Announcement
Hello Everyone,

Firstly, we’d like to thank everyone’s patience and understanding with the delayed PC release of Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA. We have not determined an official PC release date for Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA, but we will continue provide the community responsive updates for the release as they emerge.

We have been trying to resolve important gameplay issues that we feel would compromise the playability and stability of the game. Unfortunately, we were unable to fix those issues to our satisfaction before the launch.

The issues proved to be more complicated than we thought and we overestimated our ability to fix them in time. For that, we are truly sorry. We take full responsibility for these problems. Fans of this game and this series have let their expectations be known and we aim to achieve them.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the fans and beta testers for their feedback. We are deeply grateful for all of the constructive criticism and we will take the communities’ critiques to improve our PC porting in the future.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you.

We would now like to inform you all of what you can expect from us from here on out.

First, we believe that the majority of the major control issues with Keyboard+Mouse and display/resolution-related issues have been taken care of.

Second, we will be prioritizing development resources in the following categories:

Random crashes
Framerate
Language-related issues

Fixing the above may result in additional issues that arise, but we feel that we must prioritize our focus on these three.

We have a good understanding of what is currently causing issues 1 and 2 and how to fix them, but because issues 1 and 2 are closely tied to gameplay, we are having trouble solving the issues permanently.

Issue 3 is taking more time than we estimated to fix because we require so much information to adequately understand what exactly is going wrong. Fixes in one area can lead to something breaking in another, and thus we have to take more time to fix these issues.

Resolving Issue 1 and 2 is estimated to take 2 weeks to fix. Once Issue 1 and 2 are fixed, we will proceed with Issue 3.

We want to assure you that we are doing our very best to deliver a stable game for everyone who wants to play Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA, regardless of platform.

Thank you very much.
NISA

Quality port is the key word, I don't know what sort of work they've already done with the port but going by posts on the Neogaf topic by posters such as Durante and what might be one of the beta testers then this time frame might be very optimistic, game seems to be a bit broken or at least the beta was in a pretty poor shape.

Anyway, CS1 performance issues took a complete change of the rendering backend and a few months to fix, so I'm a bit concerned about the proposed timeframe here (it might be based on similar planning which would have had the PC release happening yesterday).

I'm assuming the game is already running under DX11 though so the brunt work of changing the API should be done, testing, optimizing and bug fixing still takes time though.

Quote:

What's of particular concern from what I've heard isn't so much the optimization of the performance, which you did wonders on in CS, but rather that some of the game simply does not work. Crash bugs, strange issues arising from there being multiple languages now, etc. Sounds bad.

That's also concerning, just what sort of shape is the game currently in anyways, if it's as bad as it sounds then two weeks fixing both the performance and bugs might not be anywhere near enough though since they're still going to work on improving the localization after taking care of most of this there's still room for additional testing before the game is released.

Wonder what Falcom thinks about this, the game was initially planned as near simultaneous release after all but might slip by two or more months now.
(At least two weeks for the code problems, probably a month or so in total for the localization and then we'll see I guess, I could be wrong but I do expect this to take some time.)

Seems that Durante might possibly be helping out and fixing up the PC port of this game too, busy guy but hopefully the PC release of the game will be in better shape as a result, whenever it actually does get released. Smile

NISA as the publisher, also unlike the earlier Ys and Trails games this is a new release that would have coincided with the English or well the localized world-wide PS4 versions release.

It does look a bit dated though since the game is also available on the PS Vita.
(Vita version actually has some exclusive DLC content too in the form of alternate outfits as I understood it.)

So yeah full "AAA" price seemed a given, discount for this delay would be nice but I seriously doubt it's happening though a refund might be approved for those wanting that.

PC Version Release Update and Progress Report

It has been a while since our initial September 12th announcement, and we apologize for the delay in communication and would like to issue an update on progress for Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA on PC. We were taking our time to be absolutely sure we were delivering the most accurate and up-to-date information to you.

Since we last made an announcement, we have been working tirelessly on improvements and bug fixes. We considered the overall issues, obstacles that arose during debug, and the maximum resources we have to address them and concluded that it will take another two months for the Steam release to meet the expectations we set for ourselves and guarantee the quality that every Ys fan has come to expect. In addition, we will use this time to apply the updated localization to the game[nisamerica.com].

This means that we plan to release the PC version around mid-December. We were unfortunately unable to deliver a simultaneous release with the Steam and console versions and apologize for our delayed postponement announcement. We deeply and earnestly apologize for not upholding the promise of the original Steam release and not notifying the community about the delays sooner.

Despite our missteps, we remain committed to delivering the best possible quality experience. With that in mind, here are some details about what exactly we’ve been working on.

After we delayed the release of Ys VIII on Steam, we reached out to Peter "Durante" Thoman for his expertise, and we are happy to report that he could share some of his hours with our developers these past few weeks. We asked Durante for his help with the following for this title: GPU performance improvements, CPU performance improvements, and developing a system for improving and regulating framerate. We also received feedback from Durante about a shadow rendering issue that we are looking into.

The above work has resulted in significant improvements in performance. However, due to the fact that we are receiving such an overwhelming number of system issues from both our internal QA Team and our Beta testers, these issues will take considerable time to repair. As previously stated in our last announcement, fixes in one area can lead to something breaking in another, so we have to be methodical in our application of fixes and improvements. In addition to improvements in the game’s system, we are also updating, fixing, and improving the game text across the Japanese, English, and French versions. This also requires a significant amount of time, due to the size of the game and our commitment to localizing the text to both English and French.

After assessing all of these factors, we concluded that approximately two more months of development time is needed to reach the level of quality we and the fans want. We thank you for your constant feedback and again apologize for the inconsistent communication.
If you have made a pre-purchase on Steam and would like to get a refund, please use this link for information on how to refund a product on Steam. For any purchases or pre-orders made outside of the Steam platform, please contact the corresponding refund support for that platform.

We sincerely apologize for these delays and we humbly request your patience.
Best,
NISA Team
