BTW I took that Pip boy back. Way too overpriced for what it was. Although it felt better than the one that came with the CE, it still didn't have a very 'premium' feel to it, and it was basically useless when it came to functionality. |
It still looked like it was made out of cheap plastic. Unless they use proper paint to give it a real look, I wouldn't want it.

In my experience the value doesn't really go up, only for some really well known universes, like Star Wars, it can go up somewhat for some figures.
Even when you try to sell on something that spawns world wide (ebay) the interest is usually not super big unless it's Star Wars, things that appeals to many millions world wide. For something like this, that doesnt appeal to millions, you have a few collectors, i would expect the value to drop in 10 years. You can see the same for some rather rare LOTR stuff, super hip when the movies were new, now people can't get it sold or have to sell it cheap.

As nice as that Ciri statue is, I am ok with the $30 Dark Horse version that came out a couple months back. I mean I could almost make a lifesize version of it with a bunch of them for that price. It's funny too since it has the same exact pose I am sure the Chinese knockoffs for that statue could just buy the Dark Horse ones stick it on a knock off base like that and you will see them on ebay for $100 in a few months.

While i never buy things to sell or as an investment, i'm also not naive to believe i will keep it until the day i die. Taste, interests and what looked impressive 10 years ago tend to change, also an economic situaton can change as well where other things gets higher priority and needs to be funded.
What something sells for is only interesting if you can really sell it for that price.. its like with antiques you see on TV shows - "this is worth xxxxxxxx amount of money!" No it isnt, it's worth that if you're very lucky to find the few collectors that are interested in that sort of thing, and if they also happen to have interest and funds to buy it for that price, at the time you are selling.
You can find that some things fetched a fantastic price on ebay, that doesnt mean it will always sell for that price, it really only means that one guy got very lucky and found a collector that was really interested and it happened to be at the time he was selling.

If the economic situation changes, it's not as if these purchases will hurt or help the situation very much. Last I tallied there's maybe $12k worth of gaming items, and that wouldn't make much of a dent in a car purchase, a serious medical bill or anything else. They're just nice to have. I'd have only wasted the money otherwise. It doesn't last long in this household |
I've had similar discussions with my family. They think I waste a lot of money on gaming - which I don't.
For a laugh last new year, I took a pen and paper and said to my father's girlfriend "okay, how much do you smoke every day?". I calculated that she spent 3 times as much on cigarettes as I do on games.
I then did the same thing with my father and brother - how much they spent on beer and drinks when going to the pub. They both spent about €70 a month in drinks at the pub.
Per month, I buy perhaps €40 worth of games (on sale) and the hardware costs me about €500 a year in upkeep so another €40 a month. That means that for €80 I have a hobby that takes up nearly all of my free time if I wanted it to. That seems like a bargain to me
Oh and once i move to my own new house next month, I'm so going to make a game room - I already have an arcade cabinet.
