I like the geisha more than this crap actress in the trailers. Always has the same facial expression ugh why did they pick her.
Lucy, MCU.
Literally how it went down in the offices of the studio:
- Okay, we have the rights to this popular anime thingy, who do we cast as the lead actress, boss?
- Go to boxofficemojo* and look at the most bankable female action star, right now.
- It says Scarlett Johansson.
- Contact her agent.

ugh youre the reason we're in this mess to begin with
I mean they are copying the anime in every little detail. It looks weird to see this in movie and not drawn.
The dubstep music indeed does not fit.... and it should not be american film to begin with but looks ok anyway

no i mean you just want to see it because johanson gets her tits out in it. youre the reason we get terrible actresses in films like this that could otherwise have potentially been decent
It was just a joke... she is getting old now
But she was something to look at in Island and Lsot in translation.
She is kinda of a emotionless actress.... WHICH IS PERFECT when You think about it for this role.
I recommend watching Under the Skin. She did pretty well there.
I wouldn't call it a bad cast just yet. Maybe she will pull it off ? Although I would put asian in this role in first place

i still preferred my original idea.. just cgi the fully synthetic characters. That way you get the look perfect, and just go with the original jap and english voice actors. It literally would have been the perfect way of doing it, because the "off" look of cgi characters would have lent itself amazingly well to the feel of the film, and these characters have to do amazing superhuman feats during action sequences anyway, so you wont have to rely on shitty wire work. massive wasted potential, really... and for what... because people want to look at johansons tits you should be ashamed, sir. ASHAMED.
now go have a wank to her pics from 10 years ago, and think about what youve done.
tl;dr It's ok, with cool visuals and music, as long as you can stomach that now it's a "I am the chosen one and will take my revenge" Hollywood story (as you should already know from the trailers.)

I heard a little different opinion.
Scarlett was miscast and is pretty bland. The music is your noninspired background noise that's in almost every Hollywood blockbuster action flick. The story is as deep as your average american viewer can stomach, like consolitis wrote - a simple revenge movie. No grand ideas of AI, transhumanity and robot rights, really.
On the good side the CGI and visuals are top notch. The supporting cast is good.

Note they cut out some stuff for this clip that is in the film.
Quote:
Just to confirm, this scene has been severely cut for this clip. There's actually much more to this with Section 9 talking to Major that will be in the actual cinema release.
Quote:
Seconded. This isn't the first 5 minutes - this comes after the first 5 mins of the film (the shelling and Mira/Major waking up for the first time). And they cut Beat Takeshi out.
Anyway, the script continues to be super bad, and Johansson's acting is just not good in this clip.

Still worse or very similar than what has been done in the Matrix nearly two decades ago.
"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

Spectacularly honoring the spirit and aesthetic of Mamoru Oshii’s beloved animated adaptations without resorting wholly to slavish cosplay, this is smart, hard-lacquered entertainment that may just trump the original films for galloping storytelling momentum and sheer, coruscating visual excitement — even if a measure of their eerie, melancholic spirit hasn’t quite carried over to the immaculate new carapace. Box office returns should be muscular, minting what could be one of the more enticing franchises in a multiplex landscape riddled with robotic do-overs.
But the real issue in Ghost in the Shell may have less to do with whitewashing than with brainwashing, as it often feels like the screenwriters (Jamie Moss, William Wheeler and Ehren Kruger) chose to jettison the more thought-provoking, cryptic aspects of their source material in favor of a streamlined actioner that jumps from one fight to another without much contemplation.
Quote:
Sanders does showcase some of the visual flair seen in Snow White and the Huntsman, with impressive visual-effects shots of broken glass, rain pellets and other falling debris, and a moody color palette effectively captured by DP Jess Hall (Transcendence). In an amalgam of her roles in Her, Lucy and Under the Skin, Johansson toes the line between ass-kicking action and a distant unearthliness that often feels, well, robotic. It’s not her best performance, though it’s hard to do much in such a slick and lifeless movie. Perhaps Ghost in the Shell needed to be more human after all.
The action is both plentiful and perfunctory, with Sanders staging most sequences as run-of-the-mill shootouts and slow-mo slugfests without much inventive or kinetic charge. There because you can’t mount a film of this budget and genre without them, they fulfill screen-time and contractual obligations, but not much else.
Quote:
There’s nothing wrong with introducing “Ghost in the Shell” into post-“Matrix,” post-“Westworld” territory; it’s just disappointing that the film doesn’t bring anything new to the table.
The film is not without its superficial pleasures, and non-devotees might soak up some of its stimuli for future repurposing as profile photos, or as the backdrop to a club night. Sanders is becoming increasingly adept at framing the kind of images any 14-year-old would deem cool (Scar-Jo in slo-mo, erupting through plate glass in latex!), which should ensure smooth progress in the modern movie business. Yet whatever philosophical nuggets were lurking amid Oshii’s tangled plotting, they surely merited closer consideration by a filmmaker who wasn’t trading in gloss, and doesn’t merely regard human beings as elements of design.
Johansson, who was superb as a blank-faced man-eating alien in Under the Skin and considerable fun as the blank-faced title genius in Lucy, is well cast here as a cybernetic hybrid with a digital axe to grind. Filmmakers can keep trying, but it seems unlikely that any character will ever surpass the power of Rutger Hauer’s visionary self-aware replicant in Blade Runner. Major’s pronouncements are flat and expedient and only Pitt manages a tone of bereaved yearning despite so-so dialogue.
Intellectually we know a great deal is at stake, but the emotional pay-offs remain frustratingly minor. Danish hulk Pilou Asbaek as Major’s closest associate cuts a dashing figure and grows more touching once outfitted with mechanical eyes after a blinding explosion.
The good news are that so far none seem negative. At worst it seems like an ok Hollywood action flick.
