The amount of WTF is over 9000 and everytime I think I get a clue what is going on they just turn it up a notch.

I haven't seen ep 5 yet, but after 4 I've gotta say I really like it  It's weird as hell, but it's got something that keeps me interested and both style and acting are actually pretty solid (for once in this subgenre  ).
I kinda think
 Spoiler: | Stars might be a reference to Cerebro  Would be a funny way to connect the show to the bigger X-men picture. |
One thing that worries me somewhat is that I'm not really sure how long can a show like this go on. For now it still feels fresh, but the formula seems a bit limited for a longer run.

Yeah, if another season happens they have to add something more to the mix than just "unreliable narrator!!".
I'm enjoying the show a lot - I can't wait for each new episode, really, but if I had to rate it I'd give it something like a 6.5/10. I find it's all style with little to no substance, but what a style man!!!
However I don't know if it can continue like that for another season..

This was the best episode so far, and legitimately great in its own right.
This show turned out to be very Twin Peaks-like, and I don't mean just that it's weird, but there's a BOB-like character and all. I'm loving where they are going with this.
Also Aubrey Plaza is simply amazing in this show, and I don't just mean that she's sexy.

How exactly does this relate to X-men? Is it in the same time line as the X-men we know for example? Or is it just "mutants in show = X-men"?

It's set in the world of X-Men, where mutants exist and the goverment hunts them down. And the protagonist is Professor X's son in the comics, so the link could be explored eventually, in next season for example. (Eg the latest episode references the protagonist's father and his actions).

I'll have to go with WaldoJ's version for now. The show presented both versions, but since the very first episode characters have been insisting that shit's real and it was mostly David that needed to be convinced that was the case. With the inclusion of

in the latest episode, I think it's too late to back down from it's connection to X-Men and pretend it's about a nobody mentally ill dude.
