I game with 1440p on this 4k with same 970 as you and it looks perdy! Just go for it, no need to hold on. Only issues are with windows it self, using resolution scaling either works or it doesn't. Programs where it doesnt look blurry, where it works it's sharp.
(and I came from same 27" 1080p).
Oh and display port sucks ass! It's borderline usable as it'll fuck up your windows placement always, when you change resolution for a game or turn monitor off. You'll end up with 1024x768 sized windows on top left corner all the time.

I had it for a couple of weeks for reviewing purposes. It was OK but I would never pay that price for that kind of monitor. It's good but nothing "wow" compared to my Dell.

IPS 34" ultrawides look like carbage, pretty much all have extreme IPS glow or very bad backlight bleed (i have at work Dell 34" and its so horrible compared to my VA Samsung which has perfect panel, pitch black blacks and nonexisten backlight bleed/glow). Have tried also Acer Predator screen, it looked absolutely shit aswell, dont understand how these expensive monitors can have so shit quality control.

It's not quality control but the technology itself. All these LCDs are utter shit when you compare them to OLEDs. I have LG 55B6 OLED tv a few meters from my Dell U3415W and Dell's blacks are joke compared to OLED's. This is why I dont want to spend any extra on any ultrawide monitor until we have better panel technologies.

For the "glow" it is a limitation of technology, but for BLB it's still quality control. Although IPS displays seem to be more prone to such issues.
I wouldn't mind an OLED ultrawide, but I suspect we are at least another year away from that. Especially if looking for reasonably priced ones.
CES is right around the corner, so we might see where things are headed.

Yeah. In fact I think (ultrawide) OLEDs are at least few years away if not more. The problem with these 60Hz OC's '100Hz' gaming ultrawides is that quality control is next to impossible if they have to cherry pick best panels for '100Hz' models. The thing is that finding 100Hz capable panel without major light bleed is pretty much a lottery win.
OLED's picture quality is just annoyingly good (not perfect though) that once you see it you cannot unseen it anymore.

FALD HDTVs still have issues with "haloing" and such. I feel like this will be even more pronounced when up close to the screen with even less dimmable zones and smaller details.
Still, an interesting development. I am curious to see how it will turn out.

Will we ever see 1080p 60hz display but with quality of crt? I just want my black levels at normal fucking resolution and framerate
amva+ iiyama xb2483hsu b2 which I have now is as close as possible with lcd. 3000:1 contrast. Even though it's better than ips, it's still far from ideal

Oled would be amazing but 1080p 60hz 24-30inch monitors are nowhere on the horizon.

The quantum dot Samsung C34F791 have begun trickling in at resellers over here - anyone know anything about it? Googling isn't giving me much..
4k with a 1080, feasible? I know I probably won't be maxing out newer games with this, but yeah, 4k is new ground for me.

There have been reports from some early users of dead pixel issues with the CF791. Some indicated that they didn't have any on the first day, but would get them a day later, sometimes whole "clusters" of them.
Worst example, was some guy getting dead pixels on 3 units in a row.
Then again, plenty of people reported no problems. With availability being quite limited until recently, it's hard to say what the odds are in this lottery.
There has been no objective data on its responsiveness.
The one issue it definitely has is that the "expanded" FreeSync range of 48-100 apparently introduces flickering in many games and is unusable. Only 80-100 mode is stable. Since you are on Nvidia, it should be of no concern.
There are some similar displays coming out in spring tough: HP Omen X35, AOC AG352UCG and Asus MX34VQ.
All three are 1440p 100 Hz ultrawides based on VA panels. The first two are G-Sync and use panels by AUO, I think, and the last one is FreeSync with a different version of Samsung's CF791 panel (no QD though).
Different curves, different stated contrast ratios. The Omen is a bit pricey. The Asus one has a built-in Qi charger in the base which is an interesting bonus.

Supposedly the first two are lunching in March and there is no official date for the Asus, although there were indications for February. I don't know how the release dates will vary with different regions.
3440x1440 is just about perfect for 34-35". This is basically a wider 27" 1440p 16:9 display.
As for performance... I wouldn't say perfectly. The 1080 should probably do above 60 FPS, but I doubt it can handle stable 100 in more demanding titles at max settings. Which is where G-Sync/FreeSync could become quite useful.
EDIT: I am not sure if there is anything that substantially different to expect anytime soon, on ultrawide front at least. LG is working on some IPS 1440p 144Hz ultrawide panels, but those are not expected to show up in displays until end of the year at best, as far as I can tell.
Samsung was supposed to be working on 144Hz VAs as well, but nothing is getting launched soon it seems.

The AOC has G-sync and 100Hz ULMB and is very cheap for that. But wait for reviews, I hope the response time/overdrive is better this time.
The Omen X is overpriced.
Asus is very interesting if you don't need G-sync, or the Quantum Dots of the CF791.
If you can't push 3440x1440 you can still run at 2560x1440 with black bars and use it as 16:9 display.

It's the old one. I can also buy QP2 new for 400 euros, that's pretty cheap. Seems to be the best big monitor in this price range, but I don't know much about monitors.
I don't plan on upgrading my GPU soon, so I'll stick with 60Hz. Would it be stupid to buy a monitor without one of the sync techs?
Not many reviews for this particular monitor, other than tomshardware. Is that normal?

Generally speaking it's not stupid, especially at 60Hz, even if it's 1440p. You probably wouldn't want to go much below 60 even with sync stuff.
Although it could go a long way in smoothing out 50-60 FPS fluctuations. Since you said you do not intend to upgrade your GPU any time soon, depending on what that GPU is, variable refresh rate could help in giving it a "boost" of sorts to keep 1440p viable.
In regards to the monitor itself. The main fault of cheaper VA monitors is their pixel response. They tend to "blur" more than IPS ones and may introduce black smearing typical for VAs. Not saying it's the issue with this one, just that it's the main thing where you can go wrong with VA panels in general.
EDIT: The review on this one seems to show a pretty decent response time for the display of this type. Though the input lag they measured is a bit on the high side.
