Not sure it's the cup-o-tea for most here but X-Plane 11 hit steam today.

Don't really think it needs a template.

It's a flight sim. Doesn't have career mode, achievements, or cards.

X.Plane.11-CODEX does not contain ANY terrain maps - so the only thing you'll be able to fly are the 4 basic 5 minute tutorials. Completely worthless release. In the absence of terrain maps, the game just puts ocean everywhere. Very Happy

Does it have non-retarded crashes yet? Or do you just immediately stick and stop into the ground? Can I lose a wing?

The crashes will remain "retarded" as there is no point in going beyond stopping after a crash or structural failure. Short of a few specific instances, in say an A-10 or an F-15, if you lose a wing you die so no point in continuing to simulate something past that. If you want something like that you'll need to stick to combat sims.

There's no proper/detailed damage model.

To keep a consistent frame rate (40-45) with nearly maxed out settings you need to decrease the reflections which cause a major hit in fps. Generally runs better than previous installments, the lighting is very good and the default scenery is quite good also.
Still you can download for free many airports and scenery and ofc use Ortho4XP which provides almost photorealistic scenery.
As a long term user of P3D I find X-Plane 11 to be impressive out of the box. The flight model is imo the best out there. Add-ons are mostly free, easy to install and stable unlike FSX and P3D.

I guess the default planes are not detailed and realistic as in the PMDG releases of Boeing 737-800 for example? No FMC calculations, entering STAR and SID etc?

No point? It's a simulator, it's for immersion. I don't really want to go slamming into the ground/buildings/terrain just to see a large fireball, but extreme windy conditions and other damage during improper landings etc would be a plus in my opinion. I wish these games had a damage model simply for trying to be a realistic sim. Damage absolutely has a point.

I'm pretty sure the actual flight sims used to train real pilots have no damage simulation. So I imagine that's why these ones don't either.

Built-in FMS has SID and STAR info in the FMC. Is every single possibility modeled in them? Probably not as well as the third party addons do. They've done a decent job with the included aircraft this time around. And they'll continue to add things to the sim as time goes. XP10 had updates for around five years or so.

Tried this. Now I'm no expert pilot, but whenever I've flown a virtual plan, I don't recall the stick being so sensitive as to have virtually no control over the plane. Taking off in a Cassina was almost impossible due to the thing lurching to the left all the time - including flight.

And the helicopter was literally impossible as I had to somehow apply maximum yaw to keep the damn thing straight. I'm using the T.1600 FCS... I tried the in-game calbration and even that seems to be leaning towards the top-left.

Any ideas?

Do you have any other controllers connected? When I used to have an xbox controller I would get something similar to that happening even when it was sitting there not being used. I disconnected it and the problem went away. Not saying that's the problem with yours but I've seen it happen.

I won't get a chance to dig out my warthog and/or my saitek gear (yoke, pedals, throttle) for a few days so I've just been putzing around with the mouse.

Just have to find a solution for my fucking trackIR reflecting off my glasses. Trackclip pro isn't an option because I don't use headphones. Sensitivity is cranked all the way to min but it still picks them up. Moving it off to the side doesn't help either. Aggravating. Smile

You can enter flight plans in the FMC or the GPS but I don't think you can actually file flight plans in the sense that you could in FSX. ATC in XP11 is better than FSX in some aspects and much worse in others. I haven't looked really hard yet but I didn't see a way that you could just file a flight plan route with ATC and then fly it manually without a GPS or autopilot but with ATC control in a 172. Not without using an addon that is. It should be as simple as clicking a menu button, file flight plan, enter your route, the end. Then contact ATC for your clearance and go from there.
