Just started playing this, finished the prologue and just arrived at the Nexus.
From your comments (and others around the internet), seems there's a lot of filler fetch quests going on in this game. Do you guys recommend just sticking with the main quest or is there some narrative value in pursuing side-missions other than filling time?

From what i read the side missions are often more well done than the main story.

Im 42hrs in and can tell you that most things under "Task" is nothing interesting, im doing everything just for the fuck of it and have spent many many hours on basically nothing but XP and a few semi interesting things like
Spoiler: | Meeting a couple of Ex-Cerberus scientists that left because the illusive man went all out and brought shepard back to life (appriciate the link to the OT) and i also met a couple of stoners on Kadara but these things have no real value as quest`s. Just a short dialouge and fetching etc. |
But the "Allies" quests are interesting.

Skip tasks, rest is usual RPG fare.

Indeed, after 20hrs of playing, the "tasks" thing is just a stupid filler mechanic.

Haven't touched the game (yet?), but it sounds like tasks are like requisitions from DAI. Those were endlessly repeatable fetch quests that served as a way to farm for influence. They were kinda meant to be ignored unless you needed the extra points for Inqusition.
The only annoying ting being that you couldn't "clear" them from the quest log.

Yeah they're similar but these don't repeat but it's minor work you can do for a small XP gain and some resources most of the time, maybe some background info or such occasionally but they're small undertakings most of the time such as crafting a certain piece of equipment or scanning X amount of Y.
(This one is a dev favorite it seems, scan rocks, scan planets, scan aliens, scan pretty-much-everything heh.)

It sure seems like it:
- Sir, the Ketts are scanning our ship!
- Then scan them back!!!
I was really skeptical about this game seeing all those bashing reviews, finally as a long time ME fan I caved in and bought it, thankfully I'm not regretting tihs even a tiny bit.
All in all the game is good, really good - 20h in and for now it's easly 7,5/10 for me. The bad facial animations are indeed bad, however this do not apply to the whole game, sometimes the animations look very nice and polished.
Dialogues aren't top notch but considering how many lines are in game it's understandable and most of the time they are more than acceptable with a few gems hidden here & there.
Story wise it's entertaining (although cliche) keeps me coming back along with the great gameplay and exploration. You can really tell that the side-quest system is to try mimic the TW3 one and I must admit that Bioware didn't fail at this, there are quite few surprises.
Sound is great, voice-acting ok, graphics are amazing (there are quite few jaw-dropping scenes) and performance is acceptable on my old rig.
For sure I'm not regretting buying this game despite it's minor flaws and high price. For me it's well deserving the Mass Effect name legacy.
I'm positive that after some solid patching, mainly for those who had problem with game breaking bugs (not me, at least for now) or maybe even some animations tweaks, it will get some more love from the this-time-too-harsh community.

I'm early in the game, and it's fun so far. It simply feels unfinished, like it wasn't cooked all the way through. The game has quite a few good ideas, and good moments. But it's VERY buggy, and we all know how bad the models and animations are by now. I can easily look past the stupid animations, but sadly the bugs are many. Characters looking the wrong way during a cutscene, animations losing synch with the voice overs, the interface repeatedly telling me I gained resources until I reload the game. And that was only for the intro story mission.
I imagine that after 2 patches, the experience will already be better. Then later on they'll release a patch overhauling the models + animations, similar to when they released a patch overhauling the ending of Mass Effect 3. Then they'll quietly stop patching the game due to not selling enough currency in the multiplayer. But we'll still have a good game at the end of it, which is what matters the most.
For anyone curious about this game: I'd say it's worth it once you find it at a palatable price on gray key sites. You won't miss much by waiting, you'll simply have more patches ready for you.

My tolerance for .. let's say visual anomalies must be incredibly low, if so many people are happy with them.
Either I'm just getting too old and cynical, or ... wait, is there another reason?

Stick with anything that doesn't involve scanning plant life or getting minerals and you should be fine. The companion quests are amazing and they show actual characters development that stays there for the remainder of the game. There's also he Ryder family quest which involves some nods to the original trilogy.
As a side note, the character growth was made that much evident with starting an NG+ playthrough. Compared to the ending of the game (which I thought was an amazing mission and one of the better game endings put out by BioWere) Ryder is a complete newb in regards to character and skills. I don't know, I was strangely attached to the characters, even space weaboo Cora, which was nothing but a soldier that did nothing else her whole life and now she wants some place to call home. Screw Liam though, even if his mission was the funniest. The space travel and galaxy map are absolutely asinine and a fucking time waste. There are a lot of quality of change things that need to be implemented. QA was either incompetent or ignored. The game should've stayed in polishing phase a couple more months.

I agree with the QA missing comment, it's like no one at Bioware actually played the game. Some things are so inconvenient or so in your face buggy, you can't understand what the testers did.
Since I rarely replay games, it's best to wait for a few patches. I hope their April 4 teasing is actually something of substance.

I don;t know if you remember, but I used to work for Ubisoft at some point. More specifically, Assassin's Creed 3. Trust me, if stuff is even remotely similar EA, QA was outright ignored. There's a lot of stuff that could have been fixed, and way too in your face to not be reported. Either that or they changed QA every two months and hired no one but fresh out of school students. In any case, some of the bugs are really sad and some choices regarding quality of life are questionable at best. I can get the transition between systems, but the way the camera flies to the system object, zooms in and then out is annoying. I think I spent 3 hours in the Galaxy Map. Or the thing about going on the Tempest and then back to the planet because apparently that's the only way to trigger quest phases.

Even if you ignore all the bugs this game is far from being an actually good action or RPG. The good qualities of the combat are meaningless half through the game because the challenge and progression are gone and the enemies keep repeating dragging on with a game that has few quality things left to offer. Then there are the dialogues, oh god those dialogues, poorly written and with technical issues as well... There are some good moments when the writing really shines providing some actual comedic or emotional value, but that's like finding a silver coin in a puddle of mud. I think the best written stuff can be found in those emails you keep getting from the crew.
I'm lvl 40+, haven't landed on the last planet to make an outpost and I'm bored out of my mind. I keep playing in small sessions completing not more than one loyalty mission each time, because those are the missions with the highest quality, then signing out...

so I got to my first serious bug and blocker:
ALWAYS SAVE BEFORE YOU ACTIVATE A VAULT
I died while being chased by a vault purification wave, and the game respawned me mid-room and mid-purification, but without the wave. It cannot be restarted and the console to end the purification isn't active. So I'm basically screwed of 6h of gameplay..

when you reload from that position, it automatically makes an autosave
by the time I realized it was bugged, it had made 3 more autosaves, so no autosaves prior the bug
