this is what you do with the letter

they can do nothing, it's just fear mongering in the hopes you'll crack and pay. it's a scam (a legal scam but a scam none the less)

Its not good advise to fold a plane out of the letter, german law-firms like WALDORF FROMMER rip you a new one if you try to let it slide. Trough some loopholes in german law they´ll bleed you dry with a courtorder alone

Had the same happen to me and had to get a lawyer myself (for a fraction of the costs these vampires wanted but still good money) but since he did send a counter-letter, i never heard from WF again. Hope it stays that way. Oh and it also happened because of Torrent/public tracker (Kickass to be precise) Laughing

Stuff from the distant past like whole series. Sure movies from the 30s of 40s could be procured via hosting sites but stuff like the entire TV series from <= 90s best off Torrent as good luck asking someone to request it on Usenet. I left Usenet back 7+ years ago as everything now is about Hosting Sites and still Torrents. I pride myself on getting the very difficult off the NET so much so they should have a TV Game Show where you compete to "Download the Impossible"! Razz

Anyway, if you use Torrent, use a VERY high Port off your Router and your client (up to 65000) where your ISPs won't remotely scan, change your DNS servers on your Router to something which is faster than Google or your own ISPs' DNS (use DNSBenchmark) and maybe look into a VPN Service. Personally, I use Hosting Site and never looked back. Wayy cheaper than Usenet, more portable, faster, etc but will "sometimes" use Torrents especially for real old movies and TV Series.

safe? all will say yes... i agree to disagree... if you pay by bank transfer linked to your id for a service which is solely linked to pirating purposes... it is a fake sense of safety if you ask me. the only added advantage of a seedbox is that it allows you to keep your private tracker ratios maintained without having to manage your own server up and running 24/7

the only safety againts piracy is common sense, especially not linking in any way your identity details, staying off social media, not caring about your epenis nickname and being random on each site you are registered, etc... and voting on the right parties in your fucked up country, you get what you vote for Wink

They're safe enough. No way is some agency going to go through all the trouble of obtaining your info from a seedbox service, when there are so many public tracker users to go after. Such services are private companies and I doubt there are laws for them needing to reveal user info like there is for ISPs. This means raids and/or serious warrants - which generally only happen for massive services like torrent trackers. And what to they get out of it? A few hundred users of such service, out of which maybe 10% are in their country, and can actually go after.

And since we're talking about countries, if you make sure the seedbox service is out of your country, then there is another massive hurdle they must go over. Dealing with international law and coordinating with another country and some other agency would be a major hassle. Again for very little gain. This sort of stuff only happens for major criminals.

Not to mention such agencies don't even bother with private trackers from what I've heard. With such laziness I can't imagine them going a route that's probably at least a couple of orders of magnitude more time/money consuming.

But yeah, if you're really really paranoid, go with Bitcoin.

what? YOu have to pay?

What exactly did You do?
I mean, I don't pirate games at all... and movies I get are either from private tracker or mega encrypted links... but 915 is harsh for a stupid movie. I mean... by downloading the movie and not buying it on bluray, you made damage for 50 euro... not over 900. wtf.

I remember few years ago a lot of people got like 500euro to pay for downloading witcher 2. But those who ignoerd it and threw the paper away were not pursued.
It's the same with polish movies in Poland. But not sure if it is legal to just ask for money for only downloading a movie.

It does not seem like legal thing to treat people like criminals just because IP address points to this apartment and it's owner. Companies cant just run around and ask people to pay whatever sum of money they think of... 915 euro could just as well be 20 or 99999 euro. Whatever.
You could've seen the movie in cinema and even bought it on bluray months ago but just download it from torrent for sake of backup or whatever. You own a movie, You paid them money. It is only example though...
Normally if a thief steals something, he either gives it back or is pursued by police. I can't just send a claim for 2000 euro to person who I think stole my shoes at the gym. wtf

900 is nothing, for music there are people that got charged for about 1200 euros for a single album, i remember the news. that's how they act in germany, at least to my knowledge unless it changed over the years.

It is. I never saw the theatrical, but I didn't find the extended version all that attrocious the way some people make it appear. Still not comparable to the Dark Knight or something, but like you said, it's watchable.

Nah they usually let go if they encounter any resistance.
He lawyered up and had the modified delcaration thingie being sent to them, from what I'm reading that should be sufficient.
Greedy cravens they are - only after easy money - if the fishy wriggles a bit they will let go and find someone else to scare into paying up. It's not like there ain't enough potential victims and these lawsuits are probably mass-processed anyway.
There are enough people that just pay. Even those cases outside Germany, in countries where you can actually ignore the letters, many idiots still pay and it has become a lucrative business for some.

Bad luck then. Your lawyer will tell you to take the deal. From what I've read when they offer you a deal and you respond with "no, I have nothing to do with this", they respond back with "ok, deal is off the table, pay us the initial sum or we go to court".

So you either ignore them, or take the deal. And now it's too late to ignore them.
