It's the battle system that ticks me off.
I need my battle systems to be fast as lightning, this is not. And the fact that it's a mix between a strategy system and a standard system doesn't help either, I HATE strategy battle system like in FFT, it's just so slooooooooooooooooooow.
Maybe I could put in some cheat that removes the battles and play through the story, because the rest of the game looks nice.

i think the game is alot better than 3, the battle system isnt as strategic as it seems, its quite fast, the cel shading graphics are pretty good, almost no jaggies with fluid 60 fps gameplay to boot.
it sucks that you cant enter buildings, i cant believe they did something like this, but its still better in 3.

Played for 12 hours now, amazing game in my opinion. The Battlesystem grows the more you play it. It´s also a lot faster than any other RPG because you can hit multiple enemies within the same HEX at once. Music rocks btw!

Another Code: F and Alter Code: F is not the same game. This one "The 4th Detonator" is the forth game in the series. Alter Code: F is a Remake of the First one on PSX. The work-in-progress name for "The 4th Detonator" was "Another Code: F" since "Alter Code: F" was just released in Japan when they announced the forth instalment.

hehe yea, nocturne is the hardest rpg i ever played, you cant even level up the normal way like in other rpgs in that one so it gets really damn tough.

LOL! Nocturne is definately nothing for beginners, they will probably break the controller in frustration, i nearly did and i´ve played almost every RPG that´s been released since SNES :/

SMT:Digital Devil Saga became very frustrating at the end too. Almost all enemies had mudo, mudoon or mamudo (death skills) and used all of them. I sometimes died like 3 times in 10 minutes or something. I've just started playing DDS2 and the story really is very good. The explaining of the junkyard was just sick.
BTW If I liked the SMT games, would I Wild Arms Altered Code F or Atelier Iris? Still have them on my pc, just have to burn it away.
Warren Spector : I never minded piracy. Anyone who minds about piracy is full of shit. Anyone who pirates your game wasn’t going to buy it anyway!
Hideo Kojima: If you want to simply tell a story, you can create a film or write a novel.

Both Alter Code: F and Atelier Iris are very good games, i would say play both of them since they are equally good.

Thank god for games like tales of legandia and grandia 3 that is out soon, now thats quality games. |
hi pallebrun,
what rpg games do you recommend for someone who wants to start in the genre? I have DQVIII here, leeching this Wild Arms 4 and want to get FF X somewhere....
is that a good choice? what dou you think
ps. i also have a DreamCast, is Grandia and Skies of Arcadia good for rpg starters?
cheers |
All those are great rpg's for beginners.
FFX is not hard, it's very easy to get into with a straightforward battle system and easy gameplay. And the battle difficulty is average.
DQ8 is one of the games I consider to be the best for someone new to the genre. It's very easy on the story, it's funny, and it has very easy gameplay.
Some say that DQ8 is abit on the hard side, but I dont agree. It's basicly hard before the first boss but after that is average, and at times even below average. I actually only had problems in that game at 2 occasions, the first boss and a boss much later in the game, the rest was never close to killing me, honestly. And I wasn't over-powered either, I finished the game at level 40. But if it becomes hard just level up a few levels and it will be all good again.
Nocturne is a game that is hard regardless of what, and it's story and systems is just not good for a beginner, so stay away from that.
Those DC games are brilliant too. Grandia is one of the best rpg's ever, with easily the best battle system ever, and it's also very easy to understand.
Someone else mentioned Atelier Iris, and that's also a very userfriendly rpg. Although, it's in 2d so if you're a 3d freak then it might not be for you.
You have to also like extremely lighthearted games, with a childish touch. Atelier iris has the best music ever btw.
I would suggest these games on the PS2/DC:
FF-X
DQ8
Grandia 2
SkIES of Arcadia (sorry for the miss)
Radiata Stories
Atelier Iris
YS: Ark of Napishtim (if you like action-rpg's in the style of zelda3, secret of mana etc)
Kingdom Hearts (action-rpg though)
In my opinion, any rpg that is easy to get into is a good choice.
It's when the rpg gets complex with weird battle systems and weird gameplay it gets hard and maybe frustrating for a beginner.
And whatever you do, never skip a game just because some say it's hard. You can almost always make a hard rpg easier by leveling-up, and leveling-up is the key to any rpg so it shuld be learned right away.
And the games I do not advice you to get (for the reasons I mentioned earlier), untill later:
The digital saga games
Nocturne
Romancing Saga
Shadow Hearts

pallebrun: What the heck is "Sky Arcadia"? Never heard of it? Is it the same as "Skies of Arcadia" on GC and Dreamcast?
