The fact that football (and by football i mean soccer) is popular everywhere, but enjoys low interest in the US, said enought on how logical they choose their sports.

Well one of the reasons why soccer is so popular is because it doesnt cost a lot of money to play, all the third world countries could play it and its an old game, thats why it didnt catch on to well in north america.

Hockey? well, we know how popular hockey is in the states. But who plays hockey? Mostly Canadians and Europeans. Think about it.
But if you really sit down, and watch all four of those games, we all know hockey is the best. Football? Ah please a little more exciting then baseball but not by much... Basketball? They go on one side, score then the other goes on the other side then scores, and so on... I just think there's something wrong somewhere when scores are close to 100 in a sport... but hockey... everything can happen in hockey, everything can change in a blink of an eye... wow. |
baseball basketball and football are really popular in canada, just nowheres along the lines of hockey, I lived there long enough, baseball is like asummer pass time for hockey players growing up

Sport is only expensive as you make it, US is a rich country thats why the sports there turned into multi billion dollar industry, not because the sport it self is expensive in the first place.
The fact that its one of the oldest game on earth and didnt catch on in America, is just making the US even more strange.

I love hockey but it is NEVER on tv. We cant even see Chicago Blackhawks home games (they suck anyway) on tv because the fucking owner, wirtz, thinks that ticket sales will increase if they dont televise home games.

its because comcast baught the rights from espn, so they cant show games everyday anymore. TV revenue is a huge part of a sports franchaise.

you guys keep saying america, you should be saying north america. Most people just find it to slow, with no action, me on the other hand I like pretty much every sport.

I dont think that the age of the sport is relevant, nor is the cost of playing. Ice hockey is expensive in relation to the others yes but normal hockey or hurling (which is much older than the other sports) can be done quite cheeply (if of a really poor standard).
Any sport can change in the blink of an eye, that's what makes it so appealing. I don't like baseball or american football but they can still change rapidly and have a (brief) moment of excitement.
Also, even though im a short arse I didnt mind playing basketball in PE. It's not a bad game really but is a sport for giants only now.

yes but out of the 90 minutes soccer might have 1 minute of excitment, you ever see the simpsons episode where they sit there and pass the ball back and forth for about 3 minutes, thats how most north americans view soccer.

well whats the point in playing a game when the best team on paper always wins? I like footy for the unpredicability and the shock results. Also everyone loves an underdog.

you're talking about the fact that good teams lose? Basketball is exactly like that
Check the standings:
http://www.nba.com/standings/team_record_comparison/conferenceNew_Std_Cnf.html
the top 5 teams in the leagues only win about a 60-65% of their games...
Baseball is just under 60%, and hockey is in the high 60s, nfl football in the high 60s as well.

Soccer/Football is the most lopsided, where the good teams never lose. just look at the top teams in english premiership. they barely ever lose.
to me, that = no excitement.

the most lopsided is probably college football in the US 99% of the time you know which univeristy is gonna win the national championship before it starts, but its A LOT more exciting to watch than the NFL, bigger stadiums, some over 100,000, better atmosphere, more fast paced, and usually most games have great finishes, but I think the same goes for ncaa basketball, the final four is an amazing tornament.

Well there's still exceitement and especially on the last day of the season when the relegation places are decided. Also its the top 6 teams in the EPL that should be unbeatable but every now and then a surprise will pop up.

it seems a bit funny to do this thread over ice hockey...
Considering that in all fairness.... its just like most american sports.. most the world has no clue... dont play it.. or couldnt care less...
Btw in terms of numbers.. the most popular sports in the world are
- Soccer
- Basketball
- Tennis
- Rugby
- Cricket
Its a weird way how the world works.. because while britains largest sport (soccer/football) ... it really didnt carry over to its colonies (New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, India, Pakistan.. The West Indies etc...) however the other sports did...

i'm not sure about basketball or what actually determines a 'favourite sport' If it means the ones people play the most, or spectate it can be really different.

A lot of countries couldnt afford to play hockey anyways, its not somthing like soccer where 3rd world countries play it, hence why its so popular.I think it should stay within north america anyways, its huge in places like russia, finland ect, but watching europe hockey makes me feel like im looking at a bilboard with all the sponsers on the jerseys and ice!
