I'm hoping the online portion of the game is just co-op or something. I'll be pissed if this is World of Pirates.
From the words of baguette Ancel himself:
"we've been working very hard on the technology during the past three years, and today we have a seamless online playground where we can travel across space at the speed of light. We can explore mysterious cities and unknown lands by ourselves or with friends"
That sounds to me like something structured a-la Division/Wildlands, only on an even larger scale (since they said you can actually visit different planets). Add to that the fact that it's a prequel with new yolo characters, and you have the recipe to make the thing lose all its original appeal and identity, to me at least.
And to think that I was joking about it last year

As you rise from lowly pirate to legendary captain, you’ll traverse System 3 at light speed to explore freely on your own or with friends.
I have still hope that this phase in gaming history where EVERY GAME MUST be an open-world online-enabled roam-and-fuck-around-without-aim collectible-riddled pile of shit will come to an end sooner or later... right now I'm pretty sad
Every game?
Just avoid AAA gaming like the rest of us allrdy does, there are plenty of interesting games from indies or other lower tier developers.
Why tho?
Why should we just accept that most, if not every, "high profile" releases conform to the same uninspired formula filled with insipid side-activities and tacked-on multiplayer features, all put in place to hide the utter lack of good level design, narrative appeal and character development?
I mean, I know there's little we can do, but at least let me bitch about it
A different planet than the original BGE. You will discover the pillars of this world
Hybrids: half human, half animals, created by humans to colonize planets that are too toxic.
We want to explain to the player what the world is about, how all of this is connected and the trailer is a part of that
Everything is connected to the first game, you will recognize the races in BGE1, Ancel likes the first sentence: Where is your master, I don't deal with domesticated.
There is a religion thing with the Pey statue.
We try to work very deeply with the world before anything else. Where is it and why? What is the history behind all of this?
We've never made such a big game, so for them as the team, it's a big challenge.
We worked for 3 years to have the proper technology to execute on our big dreams for this game
It allows us to travel across planets, planets with a lot of detail like cities, gravity, moons, etc.
The Chinese restaurant sequence to the city to jumping into space is based on the game design - going from small scale to large scale. It's like GTA in space.
When you take a picture, you are creating a moment. We want to have meta information on the pictures players take. And then you can show the photo to a NPC that the NPC reacts to.
The technology has two components: 1 is the scale, 2 is the online. The game allows for both solo play and you can call a friend to help you with completing a mission. We want players to share the adventure together. It's an adventure you can play alone or with friends. Like BGE1 using the help of your companions, so too can you use other players to overcome the challenges of the game.
Closed-doors internal demo this E3, but you will hear a lot from the team in 2017 about the game.
It combines elements of online worlds, early-access releases, role-playing games, and procedural generation. It’s also, admittedly, still pretty rough around the edges. Many of the game’s key elements — from graphics to combat to narrative — are still being implemented.
“There’s still a lot of work to do,” Ancel says, “but we now really believe that we’re going to make this game.”
...
Three years ago they started working on the technology that would power the experience — it started out as a kind of solar system simulation tool — and only recently have they started actually building the game. “When you don’t have this technology, you can’t really start the game,” Ancel explains. “It’s too difficult. But now we can say for sure that we will make this game, we’ll finish it. Because we have the technology for it.” He describes the game’s current status as “day zero of development.”
...
It all sounds incredibly ambitious, especially when you consider that Ancel also wants to treat Beyond Good & Evil 2 as something of an early access title, with a community of players offering feedback and testing early prototypes. The version of the game I saw, meanwhile, was still in a very early state. The graphics were mostly placeholder (Ancel says that “two weeks ago there were no graphics”) while aspects like combat and any kind of narrative aspect had yet to be implemented..
So basically they have absolutely nothing but a concept but even make stupid plans for an EA and on top of that Ubi will be bought out by Vivendi this year so there is no way this project will survive after the acquisition.

Potential to be either totally amazing or completely disappointing..
Considering the track record of such ambitious projects, I won't get my hopes up whatsoever.

Looks like a great draft so far. Honestly not what I had previously imagined it would turn out to be, the sense of scale is outstanding. Their top priority should be the population and that it all feels coherent in the end.
'You create your own character, you start at level 1 without anything and you need money to level up, you can take pictures and share them with the other guys. You can visit anything seamlessly, multiple cities, planets! Look, you can drift with a spaceship!'
They really nailed the spirit of Beyond Good and Evil
This is what I dislike about this entire ordeal. It's not about the end product, which may end up being alright (I really doubt it, for my tastes at least, but can't be ruled out), it's the fact that once again, instead of creating a new IP they're using the famous name and hype surrounding it like parasites in order to create something that clearly has no links whatsoever with the past (it's something else entirely in terms of direction, scope, characters, anything really) with the only intent to assimilate the brand and convert it into easy sales, not after having killed it beforehand. Ubi did something similar with Wildlands as well (along with many others), which felt like Ghost Recon in the same way I look like Leanna Decker. Shame on them *dilly ding dilly dong*
until you remember its ubi, so all this cool stuff, and how visually nice it looks, will have zero to do with the finished product.
its like they havent leaned yet not to show things off until its almost done, because theyre incapable of delivering on the big ideas they start out with.
Damn, that seems like very early stage footage. Release date 2019/2020 at the earliest? I hope this guy releases the game and finally achieves his dream before his death. Poor guy.
It's not bge2... think about it. It's sequel to 15yo game that is not even remotely similar in any way.
We highly demanded new game with pey and jade and we get something else.

The latest Beyond Good and Evil 2 update features new gameplay footage on how players can navigate the world via jetpack and ship, and how groups of co-op players can stay close together when traveling at high speeds by forming an armada. Additionally, you'll get a fresh look at how melee combat is coming together, with a taste of some work-in-progress footage of Shani showing off some elaborate combat moves with her staff.
