And there is, as always, the "pre- and post-EA" time.
EA came and we got Mass Effect and Dragon Age and while both games are good (subjective, some say great, some good, but generally positive I think), but they were also very mainstream and made to appeal to a very wide audience, something BG etc. clearly weren't.
Yeah, well, the characters in ME2 were pretty good and so was the intrigue, Bioware still retained part of its essence back then even if the gameplay was streamlined with a ton of facepalm elements.
I couldn't finish DOS1 coz of a pretty bad writing.Too much "humor" that wasn't funny and everything( writing-wise) felt like it was a big joke. It's a shame, coz I loved all other aspects of the game.
However, I really liked DOS2 chapter I. It was much better in this regard.

Same with DOS, I've reached the source temple twice only to quit playing the game completely because the writing is so poor/boring.

I enjoyed the game but this shit drove me crazy, devs please take your own games seriously. It's alright to have funny shit but it doesn't make for a good role playing game - unless you are a clown on a quest to find the holy honk.
I'm glad they acknowledged it was a problem because it was easily the worst thing about DOS. I can't imagine someone is going to be looking at Baldur's gate and trying to compare these two RPGs when one of them isn't even trying to be serious.
Absolutely the story was what really drove me away from 1. Not because of the humor though, but the setting. Didn't enjoy the "space" thing one bit, and the rest of it I just couldn't get immersed in my character enough to find enjoyment out of the dialogue choices.

Funny you mention that, in terms of world building I really disliked:
Space
The Ice / elemental storyline
The whole misspelled source sourcerer stuff blegh.
Here here, I also agree the worst part of DOS was the story and how silly it was. I mean, yeah, like some of you said, humor can be great for games and storytelling but I just felt it tried too hard... Or maybe it just wasn't my type of humor.
That said, I'll for sure buy this one no matter what cause gameplay wise, DOS was hella enjoyable on its own.
I remember someone criticising Sven about the exact same thing on his website and his answer was that they are making a conscious effort to beef up the story and cited BG2 as inspiration.

Yep, there has been an effort (thankfully ) with also a bigger writing team of nine writers this time around. There will still be the trademark Larian goofy bits of course, though OS2 is said to have a darker tone overall - more "realistic" so to speak. Let's hope it's all true, this sequel really has the potential to be an amazing (and complete) gaming cocktail.
Type of humour felt very Belgian to me. Bit over done at times and yup story wasn't a strong point (wasn't bad nor good). Still felt different enough than what we usually get from a fantasy setting.
That being said, I'm glad they are putting more money towards the writing and putting a serious effort to it. The little I've seen was quite the improvement over the first game.
Enjoyed Original Sin a lot. The story started out well but then it went in some direction and I lost interest in that. The whole space or whatever that was didn't interest me, so just ignored that and enjoyed the combat and exploration. The music was very good too.
Picked this one when it got on steam early access. Can't wait for the release.
The way I see it, every life is a pile of good things and bad things. The good things don’t always soften the bad things, but vice versa, the bad things don’t always spoil the good things and make them unimportant.

Is BG2 that amazing story wise though No. Having games as an inspiration in the first place for story is a big ????? to me. They really should try reading a book at some point, i bet they'll be surprised.
They did good with Divine Divinity i think, it had great atmosphere, interesting exploring, immersive game world.. Didn't care too much for their 3D game(s), it wasn't bad but quite medicore in comparison to something like TES. Still didn't play Original Sin even though i backed it.. it looks like a game where fighting and encounters is probably quite fun, the rest i dont know, dont get good vibe from that (atmosphere, game world interactivity and exploring, immersion).
Irenicus was a pretty cool villain though, but Baldur's Gate 2 is more about scope I suppose and also gameplay which is where it really shines although some people prefer the more toned down lower level adventure from the first game, expansion goes almost up to the epic D&D levels and things get pretty hectic but you are basically on a path to divinity at that point and then it depends how things turn out. Game had a lot of different choices and consequences after all which is hard to match in current titles.
Also a ton of written text even if it's not to the same length of Torment where even items could have lengthy writings explaining some smaller function.
Going to be interesting to see what Divinity 2 will be able to deliver, haven't actually played the early access version that much aside from the beginning area which doesn't really offer much insight into the game besides some of the basics.
Though yeah there's always been a lot of strange humor and quirkiness going along with a in general pretty dark and moody overall story and tone though Eco Draconis went even further into humor territory which sometimes clashed a bit with the rest of the game when you realized just how badly things were going against Damien ha ha.

I loved D:OS. Can't remember having issues with the story like some people here appear to heave.
Will definitely buy the sequel too. Still hoping that it will get a small discount before release.

Surprising that half of the people who took survey have not played South Park or Shadowrun or Wasteland 2.
