Just watched the deleted scenes, and well, of course they were deleted, nothing interesting was happening in them. Prometheus had a few cool ones, like alternate scenes, etc.

This time they probably had to find some sort of compromise, since removing all the uninteresting scenes would have left us with a 20 minutes long* movie with no monsters at all
*David: Covenant, a sci-fi short starring Fassbender and his quest as the intergalactic version of Hannibal!

Have watched the movie now. It felt pointless. The rambling about suits was pointless as well. The conditions were shown to be almost entirely earth like. What were they supposed to do? Have an obligatory suit walk before taking them off?
Ixigia got the jist of it in his post. Hopefully the next movie (if there will be one) will be something resembling good.
Just let the Alien franchise die. It run out of its potential on Alien 4 (I know, I know but the idea was good). What next, another movie about a crew of some ship that meets David and got fucked up by obligatory Alien hunt? Or whole movie about David perfecting his "organism" while shitting on first movies. Really as RLM stated who fucking cares about Alien origins. Xenomorph was cool because it was a mystery. And now this messy shit from egoistical going dementia old hack.

Lead girl wakes from extended hyper sleep, finds herself in the colony / covenants destination. David no where to be found or found dead when the covenant arrived. Mystery as to whether an alien arrived with the covenant.. que alien attack on colony, alien queen reveal, yada yada reuse "get away from her you bitch", reuse orbit nuke/ airlock, credits roll.

Sorry if I misunderstand about this but what rambling about suits? It's easy to understand that just because a planet has a breathable atmosphere that doesn't mean it's safe to breathe. It can have airborne diseases/toxins/bacteria/alien micro organism or any number of things that are fatal to humans. It's not a big deal on its own, just a good example of how little thought they put into these generic sci-fi scripts.
This movie was awful though and it had nothing to do with suits or unscientific stuff. It was just a boring and unsatisfying movie
Is riddley scott senile or what. What is his obsession with pale short black hair woman in sweaty tank tops. Trying to create yet another Ripley. Assbender was the only decent part. The rest of the cast was weak with predictable scenes all over.
Bit of a rant but man I used to love Alien movies as a child.
Spoiler:
How can you have a character like that woman cry for the whole movie and suddenly turn into Rambo. Killing the 'perfect creature' twice that runs straight into hazards. Somehow it has less IQ than a bull. David should have killed himself over creating something that stupid.
Everyone and their hamster knew it was David on the airlift. Clumsy scenes all over like with david in the end where he is holding his amputee arm whch somehow is the same size as the arm with the hand.
Totally forgettable characters except for assbender. Walter acting all cocky suddenly saying he had some upgrades. Yet he lost the fight. Why didn't they show David win in some smart way because of the emotion he has or just something smarter than just winning without showing us anything. Such lazy writing. Even in an important scene like that. Not even a scene after showing what happened to walter.
Forced action michael bay style. What happened to suspense in tight corridors and the alien being witty. Now it even just walks through the main hallways of the ship following the doors that open. Not one bit of horror. Yet it can sense it's being watched on the camera. Such inconsistent design.
I feel like the movie would have been 0 without assbender. Giving a decent performance with such an awfully written character. All the other actors didn't deliver at all.

So... I tot xenomorphs were their own species... much like the engineers... y'know... had no idea they were created by machine...
sorta ruins it for me... shuda been just a species that existed and engineers wanted to study them and shit went south... and david wanting to create would be all learning how they become what they become and use people as feed.
Not as science experiments...
I'm not liking where this is going... is this canon now? Xenomorphs were created by david...
The "Advent" extra, heavily implies the Engineers first created the Xenos (well, a version of them anyway), just like they created Humans.
Spoiler:
David re-invented them. It still doesn't make them their own species, but at least they weren't (solely) invented by David.

now im not saying i LIKE the idea of having it 'explained', and even though i seriously doubt ridley took the thought all that far, but to me it sorta explains their biomechanical design. The aliens always looked designed - gigers designs often have that mix of biological and artifical/mechanical.
NOT saying that was planned from the start - they just went with his designs because... man, the guy was just fuckin weird as hell and so were his creations, but i do think designed by machine really does ACCIDENTALLY fit in pretty well with the original alien design.
and while i was initially SUPER against all this explanation of the aliens... i grudgingly admit it does make them a little more interesting to me. A machine - the perfect machine, maybe, given its ability to create and feel, disgusted with its creator, and the failures of the creator of its creator, goes on a search for perfection.
i just wish it was written better.
you can, however, tell that all this is a work in progress rather than a long term plan. i think a lot of it fits together, but the biggest failings for me were
1: Seeing the alien drawings in prometheus. Given how long david took to get to the alien design through selective breeding and manipulation, it seems kinda silly that the engineers managed to reach a very similar design. I doubt that david would EVER purposely follow the designs of a race he feels are inferior
2: having a very similar alien-looking thing burst out at the end of prometheus. I wont punish ridley too much for that since it was clearly the studios wanting that shit, so he had to have AN alien that LOOKED like the original... either way i think it was a mistake.
Well in Prometheus it used human DNA to get to that close point..
Prior to that it used engineer DNA to get close to that close point..
So human and engineer DNA isn't far off since it was their DNA that created us..
It just needed an extra bit of fiddling on davids part to get the perfect design..
Which needed inferior human DNA.. which is why he used the beacon to lure people..
He studies the species that he created until he realized what he was missing..
So on that evolution it makes sense..
But I would have been so happy without an explanation at all..
That they're just there.. and engineers couldn't win against them..
And humans are just pathetic.
I would have been happy if the whole thing was about engineers and who they were and their history and extinction told through the eyes of David/crew and not the origins of xenomorphs. They should have stayed a mystery... engineers not so much... maybe make first real contact.. that also goes terribly wrong but not because of greed.. but because humans find out that they're created.. there is no god.. there is no light at the end of the tunnel.. and they were created as feed for xenomorphs and on a mission to deliver the eggs.. things went shit.. and we evolved and became space explorers rather than food.. so the meeting would just end with engineers slaughtering all of humanity aboard a ship and david unleashing a horde of xenomorphs on them.. wiping out entirety of the remaining engineers... and david dies... and we get a time lapse of his severed head staring into space for hundreds of years as xenomorphs run and breed and all sorts of things they do.. and we hear the beginning sounds from alien that the crew was awoken by showing that humanity survived..
the reason i think its silly that the designs got so close is because david says (and it even showed) how wild the mutations were. The way it sounded was like it was so powerfully uncontrollable it was practically a dice-roll as to what kind of mutation you got, even from the same host, and david went through SO many iterations, using all the animals of the surrounding environment (which was my understanding, since there was no life left) in order to get his design
david wiped out all the engineers in his initial attack. He uses non-engineer life to create the alien we saw in the first half of the film, and his eggs/facehuggers... and he went through MANY different iterations until he refined it into the alien form that we know.
the only reason he needed humans isnt because of dna.. he was just simply out of meat. His pets had probably killed or chased off whatever life remained in the area around the city.
no i mean he wiped out all the engineers on that planet. i dont believe thats their homeworld... far too few engineers for that. its probably just some colony planet with a single city - if that wasnt the case, other engineers on the planet would have discovered what david had done and very swiftly destroyed him, or sent word to other planets to bring in reinforcements.... surely theres DOZENS of worlds where the engineers have set up colonies.
i just imagine this colony in the middle of nowhere suddenly went silent and none of the other engineer worlds have any reason to take note and be suspicious.

"There will be three or four different players coming in to investigate. One of which will be the Engineers arriving back to find their planet decimated. I think those ships come and go on regular intervals. I see them as the gardeners of space.
Where we go next is obvious. We’re gonna actually go to the planet."
that wouldnt make any sense. surely the next place we go is where david was headed with his thousands of colonists?
and i seriously doubt THAT is the engineer homeworld..
id like the engineers to follow the humans to their new world, and then be shocked and furious to see what david has created, and then kill david and decide to send the aliens back to earth (ie my previous idea, where they crash on lv426 on the way to earth to punish humanity for what its done)
Cameron was asked about his thoughts on Sir Ridley Scott’s recent Alien: Covenant and the direction that Ridley was taking the lore in.
“I thought that Alien: Covenant was a great ride. It was beautiful. I love Ridley’s films and I love his film making , I love the beauty of the photography, I love the visceral sense that you’re there, that you’re present.
It’s not a film that I would have made. I don’t like films where you invest in a character and they get destroyed at the end. I would not have made that film. I can’t comment on where Ridley is going with it but I think he is obviously trying to create a greater universe around it and more backstory with the Engineers and so on. I’ll show up for the next one, absolutely.”
watching the making-of maste...disaster class with ridlurr scott...
its pretty clear where the problems came from. scott is fucking disillusion, and everyone around him is so IN AWE of his undeniable awesomeness, no one wants to say 'dude, this is shit. youre making a shit movie. stop it'.
im having to skip through this, because its just too much cringe. hes so convinced hes making something scary, clever, and well written...
well that was fucking annoying. they showed reaaallllly interesting bits and pieces on world and set design and fucking teassssed the shit out of me with stuff on making and filming the alien pieces... shit, theres a good hours worth of content i would have LOVED to have seen, but they barely touch on it... barely touch on the most interesting part of the film.
instead its all just mostly OH MY GOD RIDLEY IS SUCH A VISIONARY, HE AMS THE BESTERST EVARRR!!
lame.
so if nothing else, at least the making of stuff perfectly suits the film. lots of promise, but a fail in the construction and misses the mark by a mile by focusing on irrelevant shit, while ignoring all the interesting stuff.

agreed on both of your posts. I wrote a similar rant on avp forums some days back... that masterclass vid is laughably sad
