vega needs way too much power for what it offers... luckily amd is kinda back on track with their cpus, but in terms of gpu nothing would change till a completely new architecture arrives

Vega 64? No thank you. Unless you need serious compute power you'd be better off with a Vega 56 or 1070/1080.
The strange thing is that the Vega 64 is kind of a failure when it comes to price/performance/wattage (although it's definitely not a slouch in any way).
The Vega 56 on the other hand hit the sweet spot when it comes to price/performance (currently cheaper than the 1070 while being a slightly better performer).
I am planning on getting a new card (I'm still running my old trusty Radeon HD 7950 @ constant high clocks, 1100MHz/1700Mhz, with an Accelero III or whatever) and I've been contemplating the 1060 6GB, 1070 or the Vega 56. Right now the Vega 56 seem to be the better choice. Before my 7950 I think I had a seriously O/C'd Geforce 8800GT/9800GT so I'm not in favor of one manufacturer or the other, I go by price/performance (and stability/compatibility).
What are your thoughts?

Everytime I can double the GPU performance I will start looking to upgrade but the Vega 56 doesn't seem to quite do it yet, or anything on the market for that matter so maybe one day?
Went from HD7950 to R9 390 myself.

Vega 56, unless it priced close to the 1080 like it is in some places here.
Also, wait for the aftermarket versions and pray that the miners don't grab all of those too

I fear "cryptofascist cryptocurrency miners" will make those cards disappear immediately. Some stores have a limit to a maximum of 3 cards sold per person but that's not really a solution since they can simply get their friends to order 3 cards each. | Well, good to know that at least somewhere the vega pricing is as intended
Here you have it for 510-520€ while the 1080 is ~10-20€ more expensive, so the 1080 is a no brainer IF you'd have to make a choice right now.
Maybe (and hopefully) that will change as the aftermarket versions come out.

Wait for the aftermarket Vega 56s. If the prices stay insanely high by then, buy whatever you can afford from the Pascal lineup.

How aftermarket beefier cooling card will be cheaper than AMD stock card?

Either the Vega prices come down a bit across the board or he might be able to grab one from the first batch that the shops will put up at MSRP. Though I admit both are pretty unlikely. In any case I don't see the harm in waiting a couple more weeks and then buying a Pascal card if AMD shits the bed again.

Oh, it won't but I'll have enough saved for the extra.

Availability I'm guessing, although HBM2 shortages and other factors might end up getting worse before they get better.

1600 USD? Ha ha.
There are better prices though, some of these initial listings just weren't edited afterwards so there are shops selling for 500 USD or so too, but it matters little since there's nothing in stock and availability is estimated between 20th September to mid-October but unconfirmed and the stores that do display incoming numbers basically list 10 - 20 GPU's so shortages are going to continue for a while and it's probably going to sell out really quickly too.

Considering that Vega 64 is < 1080 and Vega 56 is between 1070 and 1080 and considering overall performance/price ratio + power consumption,
it currently makes no sense whatsoever to go for any Vega GPU, unless you're doing GPGPU computing stuff.
And even then availability and price instability or say "uncertainty" does not justify the effort. |
Those prices doesn't match those in Sweden and thus it's not a valid comparison as far as price/performance goes. The 1080 is ~€200 more expensive than the Vega 56 at the moment so that's not even an option.
Since the Vega 56 is cheaper than the 1070 while a better performer it's basically the only choice right now. Things may change in a month or two though.
@ tonizito: Yeah, currently the prices are actually near the MSRP here if you pre-order (they're waiting for shipments to arrive later in september) but that may change as soon as the pre-orders have been shipped and I can't afford to buy a card this month.
We'll see. Even the 1060 is a good card for it's price (don't know if V2 is a better overclocker than V1) as long as it's a good clocker. The 1060 + a good 27" monitor might do the trick.
I do have that craving for the Vega 56 though. The Vega 64 is currently a fail though. They need to optimize it to drop power consumption (sacrifice some GPGPU?) and price it more competitively.
I've had my MSI 7950 OC since 2011 when it was released and it's still a really good working horse, stable at 1100/1700 (830/1250 stock) but as I wrote earlier it's struggling more and more with newer titles.

Haha, yeah, I saw that as well. Never bought anything from Liontech though but they seem to be extremely opportunistic aiming mainly at miners trying to get into etherium mining asap before the rewards start dropping.
As for the rest, you're right. There's no guarantee that the prices will stay at €430 once the cards have arrived. I may simply have to wait until after the new year to see prices drop to proper levels when the chip manufacturers can churn out huge amounts with more fully functioning gpu's per slab allowing AMD to still make a profit at lower prices.

Yeah, that's my thought as well. nVidia can simply drop the price of the 1070 and overtake the Vega 56 in price/performance/availability/compatibility.
