+1

spend the money on something original, last decent sci fi I liked was Pandorum.

Well their origins, sure, but not (as of yet) what drives them. The queen, their history (how we get from David to galaxy spanning horror), purpose, are all still a mystery.

Well I'm not interested in any of those things, the first 2 films are legendary and for different reasons. The rest seem like massive studio cash-in's and idea's for fanboys that no one really cares about. I mean with covenant you wrote out the only interesting idea from the first film, also the aliens were the worst / least interesting part of the movie.. what a complete and utter dismal failure if your making an alien film.

gives a fuck if this story comes full circle, thats fan service for the fuck of it, it doesn't guarantee a good film.

Covenant was a MAJOR disappointment to me and nearly everyone I know.
The reason it became a very stupid movie with stupid flat characters etc. is because the movie company stopped Ridley Scott from working on Prometheus 2 (which is why there are a few short clips explaining some of what would've happened in the cancelled Prometheus 2), fearing low box office numbers.

I have no clue why Scott didn't fight more for the actual vision and story that was scripted and they had started work on. Instead he gave up completely and had a new script made (by a Xerox machine or something) that was so dumb (and ruined any chance of this franchise having any quality releases in the future).

what concerns me about scott is that i dont think he likes the aliens any more or gives a shit about them. i think hes all about david, and hes sacrificing the aliens so that he can use them to float his new pet 'love', which is his stupid robot man.

anyway, pirates 5

there were two, i felt, good parts in the film. #1 i legitimately laughed during the end of the guillotine sequence. That bit felt 'right', and it was funny. I'll come to the second thing later.

I think these films are trying to create spectacle but in doing so its mostly just white noise. This film starts with a loud big sequence full of running and smashes... and its just not even remotely as engaging as a simple fight scene in a blacksmiths shop like what we had in the first film. a crazy zany fight later in the film, doesnt match the pacing, filming and fun of another straight forward fight at the end of the first film in the caves. They just keep throwing cgi and bigger and louder sequences, which i dont even think they know how to shoot properly.

also the music sucks.

the plot... i mean, i followed it, but that doesnt mean it made any fucking sense to me. 'because magic' seemed to be the way it linked one nonsensical plot point to the next one...
 Spoiler:

anyway, #2.. the other bit i liked,
 Spoiler:

It was at that moment I thought back during this and the previous film and realized that even though these last 2 films sucked and were boring.. it was ALWAYS during the bits with geofrey rush that the films came alive and were fun.. interesting... well acted...

 Spoiler:

There were GOOD bits in the film, and i just think if they had focused on everyone else but what jack was doing, maybe we could have had a decent film.

I think thats how they could, theoretically, save this franchise. make a new one focusing on barbossa
 Spoiler:

, pull back the action sequences and make them more about swashbuckling adventure rather than big soulless cgi fests... and if they can, lets make a more interesting, coherent, character driven plot without too many dumb plot devices to carry the thing along...

and if we must have jack? try to limit his screen time to.. 20 minutes tops. i think he might still work in incredibly small doses.

ultimately to me, the bit where we see jack, drunk and confused, is a metaphor for these films. Theyre all about depp desperately clinging on to the one successful thing in his career... sparrow was washed up, confused and hes got nothing to say... just stumble around doing a confused little hand waggle while everyone watches and wonders what the fuck hes even doing here.

sabotage

rewatched it. i like this movie a hell of a lot more than most people seem to. Yeah it had its missteps, could have been a little tighter, but what was delivered was still a coherent, interesting and enjoyable mystery/thriller/action film. not a GREAT film, but i really dont agree with most of the hate this film received, and i think it deserved to do a lot better at the box office and with reviewers.

power rangers

jesus christ, i cant wrap my head around it all i know is that im fucking annoyed as hell

...because this was almost really really good. what the fuck happened. why did the producers sabotage themselves?

i feel like the film was 70% there. they throw in some decent humor, some neat intrigue, a bit of drama, even a few moments of decent suspense and seriousness, and build it all up really well... and then suddenly out of nowhere, throw in some mega cringe. Whether its the villain chick overacting to a painful degree (pull it back a bit and she could have been a pretty solid villain), the outrageously terrible 'acting' by the main heros while theyre trying to 'morph'... which leads me to the really really dumb cringy 'words' they use during all the dialog when theyre trying to talk about the more 'magical' elements of the show, and also the shitty 'teen' "YEAHH, TAKE THIS" shit during the battles.

like i said, i dont get it. the films budget and the previously mentioned 'good shit' show that they clearly were aiming for something more than a cheap, dumb, throw-away kids movie... and yet their aspirations of making a what i assume to be 'young adult' aimed adventure movie, were completely undermined by all the needlessly silly cheese. I literally facepalmed during the power rangers theme song bit when they got their robots. why why why why why why why, this could have been a really good movie.

basically everything after when they get their suits needed to be torn down and rebuilt from the ground up, because that was the moment it really went full-on downhill... though i will give credit to the pretty tight solo-fight towards the end, and the very last few minutes of the film...

Seems to me they had the chance to reinvent the show... come up with some BETTER zoid designs, a better and more refined concept... but instead all they did was wallow in the original story which was NEVER anything more than a lazy and dumb kids franchise... and if thats all they wanted to do... shit, a new fucking tv show or cartoon would have sufficed... and the definitely didnt need to put the effort they did into making this film as decent as it was... also, it was like... 2 hours long? for a kids movie? have they ever even SEEN a kid before? are they aware children arent known for lengthy attention spans?

ugh. possibly the most frustrating film of the year because of massively they undermined all the decent stuff they did right in the film Sad how this film went down makes no sense to me.

Baby Driver - 6/10

Points go to the perfect execution. Those montages with synchronized sound and image were great! Movie was dynamic and entertaining, BUT lacked self-awareness and self-loathing. I mean, Tarantino did this tons better.

Ballerina (aka leap, I think?)

Super ultra mega predictable, a sort of default layout for these kind of "follow your dreams" movies. The movie never tries to break out of the mold, and falls into the usual motions.. the predictable rise, then the pride, betrayals, and then the happy forgiveness and success ending. The music isn't my cup of tea, and at times it fell a little too much into I guess I would describe as the usual teen pop music sort that you would expect to hear in kid/teen cgi movies... BUT the music that was there was suitable, well used and decently choreographed.

On the flip side, it had the usual archetypal characters but they were well done and endearing/well acted, the story was fun and put a smile on my face, and there was nothing that I would deem "kiddy level" corniness to the film.

Ultimately a film comes down to the impression it leaves me with at the closing credits, and... well, it was a good one. Uplifting, sweet, charming. The failings it had were never deal breakers or cringy, and the positives outweighed them. A really sold film.

I liked the first one as well.. It feels like more of the same, so if you enjoyed that, this is a movie for you. Sadly the gory action has been turned down a bit. But the movie shows you within the first 10 minutes what to expect for the rest of it Very Happy

The crappy vfx were quite distracting though, but I'm very sensitive to this anyway Sad

Is it also the same guy as in Blow, with Johnny Depp? Depp's character smuggled cocaine for Escobar and got betrayed by his pilot who worked with the FBI/DEA.

transformers 5

jesus christ, im fucking exhausted. i know its like 2 and a half hours long (and thats pretty lengthy for a film), but it felt like a marathon movie... i feel like i watched an entire season of something, people certainly got their moneys worth in terms of 'meat', when they saw this in the cinema

the movie ground to a fucking halt when hopkins character showed up. like seriously, a total momentum killer, that entire chunk of the movie (around the 7th hour or so, id imagine) really really really was horrible and a large part of the films problem

turns out the moment
 Spoiler:

, things improved, so basically hopkins... SIR motherfuckin anthony motherfuckin hopkins... yes, that hopkins, ruined this film. as bad as this film was always going to be, HE made it worse... so well done. well fucking done.

i think marky mark was probably more likeable (apart from when he meets the chick) in this film than he was in the 4th one...though its weird, i also found him less interesting and more generic... so maybe hes usually a shitty character and the only way to make him interesting and likeable was to strip him of his characteristics and make him a generic hero? ugh thats horrible.

the young girl actually managed to not be bad, i didnt mind her for the most part. the heroine was ok, not too annoying. they both get a pass in this, but neither of them stands out as particularly interesting.

anyway. theres a bit at the start of the film, where bumblybees gets shot and falls apart. might sound like a spoiler, but no its not, dont worry about it... anyway he magically animates his various parts, explosions go off, he gradually pulls himself together, lots of loud sounds, shooting, random characters... that entire sequence, to me, perfectly encapsulates the entire film. loads of random crazy explosions, cgi, loud noises, movement, colours, crazy action with no real reason, cohesion, style or coherence, and without soul, passion or beauty. thats this film in a nutshell. a loud mishmash of random explosions without any flow or cohesion, that smashes you around the head until your confused and exhausted.

also, without spoiling anything 'significant', i now hate bumblybees. semi-spoiler:
 Spoiler:

anyway, im not sure where id rank this film. i know i still consider the third film to be by far the best of the franchise... id probably rank these films...3, 2, 1, 5, 4? maybe its tied with 4 as the worst one because of hopkins and the pure silliness of the story (no really, these films have always been kinda silly, but this film turned that shit up to 11)

moments of a really satisfying movie are to be had... the spectacle was certainly there (will definitely grab the 3d version), but at least the 4th film had a more straight forward (and thus cohesive) story, so... fuck im rambling... i blame the 3rd... 4th glass of wine, i dunno any more, i feel like i started the film 2 weeks ago and ive been out there in the wilderness for far, far too long.

im exhausted.
