Almost perfect. Pity it will never be made real. Sad The tension and ambiance, the feeling of being hunted and frightened was so, so good. I remember seeing and hearing the midwifes would make me.. kind of sad.. Razz
But hey, it might be that was because of the praise of those 50.000 initial owners, that much of the ppl got to know the gem it was. I got it just when it got out and was immediately hooked. It had all i was hoping, and much more, so did my share of the praising too. Smile

Only complaint i can remember: Those bulkhead transitions.. took ages loading. Very Happy

The last time that I played it I followed this guide: https://www.systemshock.org/index.php?topic=4447.0

As far as I know, it's still relevant and up-to-date, just pay attention to the installation method (clicky) since the game has some troubles with non-default paths. Razz

edit: the entire thing sounds complicated but the SS2Tool takes care of everything, just drop the zipped files in the mod folder et voilà, it's similar to the Nexus.

Thanks. Didn't install rebirth as i read they pretty much failed to capture the essence of the originals models. Don't know if this is true Razz

Yep, it's very true, the models are entirely different from the originals and not consistently good (kinda hit and miss). It all depends on personal tastes, I don't dislike them but definitely they lose some of their classic horror vibes Very Happy

And classic horror vibe is what i'm going for! Shame the mod that tried to modify rebirth models into the vanilla ones didn't amount to anything :/

Yeah SS1 and 2 were utterly brilliant although SOMA comes up real close now especially with exceptional modern-dat GFX. I would utterly die to see SS3 with modern gfx. Surprised Shocked

Chromatic aberration, bloom, film grain, vignette, scan-lines, tonemapping and eh some other shaders too for the hell of it, unfortunately. Very Happy
(Along with some basic blur shader for anti-aliasing.)

Well there are exceptions though. Very Happy

One of the parallel events in System Shock 2 is two other characters whom you find notes and such from eventually escaping through some shuttle and somehow Shodan has managed to posses the female character, makes little sense either way though especially with how cyber surgery and such takes months.
(Could of course be biological as you don't see the actual character aside from a black shadow and the exposure to that biomass - nicely done hacker from SS1! - might have caused some infection or whatnot but eh, one of the earlier games to use a method for leaving things open for a sequel I guess. Very Happy )

Yeah, it's not the ending Levine scripted. http://irrationalgames.com/insider/what-might-have-been/

Quote:
“Due to miscommunications or differing ideas, a different cinematic video was created from the one that I originally scripted,” says Levine. “It had this elaborate sequence where Shodan would attempt to kill you in a double-cross, as this ‘cyber stinger’ that was in view provided tension of your impending doom.” Upon getting his hands on the video for the ending sequence, Levine didn’t see anything that he wrote in the script. “We didn’t have much to work with. It was like when you look in the cupboard and you’re trying to make soup, and you have a bag of salt and couple of pinto beans.” Working with fixed assets can be extremely challenging especially with limited time and resources as well as fighting the technology back then. Levine remembers, “We had to write to the assets we had at that point, and all we could do was edit it. We completely ran out of time and that cut scene wasn’t the right ending for the game.”

Still doesn't explain the "nah" line though.

It ended like the 80s movie, Demon Seed, where the computer becomes human to avoid inevitable destruction. Nothing wrong with that as I'd die to see Shodan in Human Form. So Much Win

A wild patch appears!

Quote:
Hello Hackers,
It's been a while, but a new update for System Shock 2 is now available. It contains the following fixes, improvements and modernisations:

-The EXE has been renamed from Shock2.exe to SS2.exe to avoid old Windows compatibilities being applied on game launch. You will need to restart Steam for the launcher to point to the new executable,
-Fixed the problem with battery not fully charging items sometimes,
-Partially fixed the problem with Pyro field glow effect never going away after saving and loading while active,
-The Recycler will no longer recycle equipped implants, preventing issues,
-Fixed many miscellaneous problems on doors, lights, and eggs,
-Fixed many upside down or badly rotated objects,
-Fixed many cases of rogue props on objects,
-Fixed quite a few cases of script duplication,
-Fixed a few extreme cases of objects floating off walls and floor,
-Fixed the almost completely broken 'Find Delacroix' quest,
-Fixed a couple of quests that were starting up or completing in a slightly buggy way
-Fixed all the broken piles of worms in the last few levels,
-Some tweaks to various existing setups to make them work smoother (explore the DML files if interested in details),
-Disruption grenades now actually deadly as per their description,
-Rick turrets now corpse normally,
-Grenade Hybrids now launch grenades from their hands instead of their abdomens,
-The starting controls now use WASD,
-The default music volume level has been lowered slightly,
-Enhanced Precision disabled by default as having it enabled was causing issues with Steam Overlay and Windows 10,
-The default resolution when starting the game is now 800x600,
-The in-game UI is now set at a fixed resolution, and will scale better at high (1920x1080 and above) resolutions. If you wish to -disable this change, open cam_ext.cfg in NotePad, and add a semicolon to the beginning of the line 'd3d_disp_scaled_2d_overlay 800 600'
-Many thanks to "Le Corbeau" for providing the 2.46 patch, and to the community for many of the fixes provided here.

This patch is only for the Windows version of the game right now. Mac and Linux will receive the update soon.

We should have some updates on System Shock 2: Enhanced Edition in the near future. I think we'll end up releasing the code like we did with SS:EE

Next? Releasing the source code?

The source code is already leaked since many years back now. This is how New Dark came to be and why the author of it is still "unknown" (well for most people at least..). Kind of funny story how it the code was found (on a CD in an old computer from a guy who worked on the game)..

It doesn't matter if it's leaked. It's not available and free for use.

if it wasn't leaked we wouldnt have New Dark which is a completely new .exe even... it's how it's done, through the leaked source code. Thief also got updated by it.

@prudislav: maybe they'll do an even better version but the anonymous dev(s) has worked on New Dark since around 2014, so tons of work has been done.. bible long changelog, its still under development and constantly updated. it would only really make sense to continue with that work..

I know all this. I think I have a copy of the source code as well somewhere.

But again. Leaked doesn't mean publicly available to use. So there's real value in releasing the code.

Well there's no reason for anyone interested to have been sitting around for all those years. Yes the development is a bit of "hush hush", but its not so bad that someone who's super into modding the executable (and with the skills that this takes) would be left in the dark by the community. But sure, we'll see. maybe someone new will come to aid when it's "more legal" Smile

At least the code exists and was discovered, so many projects and ports running into problems or simply not happening short of a full remake because of utter terrible or non-existent backup routines or even routines to destroy existing assets and move on with all kinds of terrible stories from development studios, mainly Japan from the examples I have but also Western ones like how EA and Ultima 8's expansion simply wasn't archived at all so when cancelled despite being finished it just got lost.

Think Daggerfall suffered from this as well and probably many others forcing other means or in some cases limited or older code and old bugs or unavailable assets.

The whole copyright and abandonware thing and lengthy processes and unwilling for fair or public use even for older stuff (Upwards of 70+ years now I think for some things but even then some studios are fighting to keep it licensed.) plus developer studios or publishers going under and even if the licenses aren't picked up (And just hoarded.) it can be tough to get data and such and the entire industry seems incredibly sensitive to public matters and keeps everything NDA'd nearly forever and nobody can really talk or it's a career risk though some stories have leaked out both for the games and such themselves and also business practices and other examples.

Glad to see SS2 EE being possible after the work on the first game even with mods allowing for greatly extending engine functionality and features. Smile

And then we'll see how the remake for System Shock 1 goes and what ever becomes of System Shock 3 when that surfaces again.

Looks like they'll include some noninvasive tweaks/design changes to make the game more accommodating to newcomers. They've posted a wip screenshot as well:
