That fucking retarded comm voice alone makes me want to kick them in the cunt.
Then there's that daft death, hamfisted emotions for toddlers and I just gave up at the daft klingon romance.
This show makes me cringe more than Seth's... and ffs I really dislike that guy and his washed up humour.
ST was always a bit campy... but with all this modern blingbling and such, it doesn't translate to that. It's just awkward looking and sounding... Poet Mikael in the shaft followed by a tardigrade was such an eye rolling moment.
I should have just stopped at that epi... just didn't had anything to watch ffs

this series is shit.
All charcters have big egos and constantly try to establish "dominance" on one another.
Science wise it's "FUCK YEAH science"
"the unknown space object can only be reached by a space suit but you ll only have a minute to turn back or else you die. You sure you wanna do this"
reply:"fuck yeah "
.....................
"captain we cant do that far of a jump it's totally dangerous and the other ship tried it and you saw what happened to them. still wanna do it?"
reply:"fuck yeah"
There are tons of other examples for this some of them even mentioned in here.
This star trek series is retarded. It is the fast and furious of star treks.
The only interesting part to me are the klingons tbh even if it goes slow.

The klingon bits bore me to death, and its not the subtitle part, done that my whole life.
Sadly it looks like the Klingons will play a big part atleast this season, gonna be painful for me |
Yeah I came to that conclusion yesterday as well when I watched the 4th episode.
Basically, my hope is disappearing for this series:
- main protagonist gets too much focus and she's not interesting enough to lead a series like this
- the Klingon's talk PAINFULLY SLOWLY and those scenes are just plain fucking dull. There's NOTHING redeeming about it. The better way would have been to make them more mysterious - giving you glimpses instead of a shitty drawn out power struggle. Also how smart is it to make you sympathise with who is supposed to be the enemy? It just doesn't work.
- by placing the series in a ship that is rumoured to be section 31, you immediately have a hard time sympathising the way you did with previous Star Trek shows. This turned the Star Trek show, as has been said, into an ego exercise instead of the "we all work together" ethic which was HEAVILY present in the other series and which was a crucial part in the Star Trek ideology.
- the episodes so far are pure shit story-wise. It's all around characters which aren't very interesting instead of about an interesting idea or exploring. A ship called Discovery would make you believe they'd be out exploring but no, let's spend an entire episode trying to get the jump drive working by sexing up this alien creature. Not only is this story line old and dull (the "evil alien turns out to be really friendly when you don't threaten it" trope), there's nowhere enough content besides this to make the episode work. Because all we see is the boring Michael, the series just falls flat on its face.
Seriously, using a boring protagonist and losing the "ship crew" as general focus is the biggest mistake of the entire series. I know what they're trying to do - they're trying to make you feel sorry for her, get drawn into the story, bla bla. But. It. Doesn't. Work.
They'd need a much more interesting character with a much more interesting past for this. She's a human with a Vulcan upbringing whose parents were killed by Klingons. They tried to marry several old tropes into one character but it's all been done before. Sisko lost his wife at Wolf 359 to the Borg, Guinan lost her entire people to the borg, etc. etc. It's old hat - they should have tried a more original angle and I'm sure that's what the mutiny plot "twist" was for but showing her in shackles for 5 seconds before giving her a new uniform defeated that point entirely.
So far, 4/10 is the best I can give this series. I can only hope they're still setting up the basics and will use the drive to properly explore while ditching the boring as fuck Klingon story angle.

I actually prefer The Orville to this by quite a distance. This one seems to be more like the movies whereas The Orville is similar to TNG which I assume most people were expecting.

Yep, me too. The Orville tries to be a comedy but works better when it's not trying to be funny.
If they tone down the humor and replace Seth MacFarlane with someone who has the characteristics of a leading man, it would be great, imo.
"I think Call of Duty resonates because it's believable and relatable," Sledgehammer Games cofounder Michael Condrey says.
Believable and relatable...Yep, sounds like Call of Duty

I don't know if it's the same old "humpers' misanthropy" going on or not but I like Discovery and I think it will get better as the new actors and writers get warm in their roles. I remember the first season of TNG with plenty of cringe-worthy stuff.
I like the Orville too. If McFarlane keep the jokes above the level of poop and penises it's a really enjoyable lighthearted Sci-fi show.
The reboot of the Star Trek movie franchise on the other hand suck donkey balls. They have all the slickest CGI, budgets etc. but lack completely in script and character development (many characters seem very "off" compared to what you'd expect from a TOS-reboot).
So I'm a Discovery fan (but at least a full season must finish before I can give it a complete opinion).

I know what you're getting at but my main problems with the show go beyond actors being awkward. The Klingons are utterly shit and every Klingon segment tests my patience to the point where I almost stop watching, the entirely different approach of making the story revolve around a single person instead of a crew, the way the episodes are clearly episodic with too little proper content to reel you in (so far) ... There's a LOT that needs to improve to make this work.
TNG had all the trappings of a great series - the scripts were weak due to internal struggles between writers and Roddenberry and the actors were still getting used to playing in a scifi series (something which all of them have mentioned during Q&A sessions) but, the basics were there. TNG season 1's worst episodes still have more flesh than the first 4 episodes of Discovery.
Speaking of actors: I actually enjoy the acting on Discovery. It's quite good - it's just that the writing isn't that great and Michael is just a terribly boring character to me. For a black woman, she's ironically very vanilla. When compared to Dax or most other major female actress in the Star Trek universe, her character is very weak.
I felt the same way about T'Pol in Star Trek Enterprise now I come to think of it. She was added as eye candy and while the writers desperately tried to flesh her out, it all felt so weak.

Oh yeah, every episode I keep wondering to myself "Why the fuck did they feel they needed to scrap the Klingons we all knew and design an entirely new Klingon-species that is annoying to look at and even more annoying to listen to!?".
We'll see if the show gets more than one season. I suspect they'll have to really sharpen their pencils and flesh out the characters while changing the direction of the show quite a bit.
I guess I'm quite desperate for good sci-fi shows and am forgiving due to the serious lack of quality sci-fi these days.

Another average episode.
I still don't like the spore drive thing but I'm willing to suspend my disbelief as long as they don't push the science with other similar crap. At least it seems to involve some quantum mechanical aspects (i.e. the end of the episode), which might prove interesting. Overall a bit too slow of an episode but at least we saw some character development and I'm starting to be interested in the crew a bit more.
Spoiler: | Also I bet we see that klingon prison ship return in a later episode, they spent too much time developing the collaborator guy and then 'marking' the captain at the end.
Which just shows how bad the klingon masks are, they need to mark each klingon somehow otherwise we can barely tell them apart, either albino or a huge scar on the face. Not to mention they have zero facial expressions. |

Klingon talking more fluently in english than their own language, getting their asses kicked from a normal hooman, chasing scenes like Benny Hill's, officers swearing...
But we have the politically correct multiverse now, thank god.
