Graphically it reminds me more of Gothic 2 than 3. The distance fog, the sometimes very low-poly landscapes..

Edit: yay, downloading Wink

So so far I started out, explored and ran into that-one-person that guides you to the first settlement and lets you run through some easier quest chain for XP and tutorial on how things work.

Got through that and into the first city which happens to be the Berserker stronghold.

Thus far it really plays like a refined version of Risen so for anyone who's played those games this should be immediately familiar, as goes for anyone who's played the earlier Gothic games.

A few differences are that NPC's will "tell" you that they are angered by your decisions or respect you or how choices will affect the story, this is basically a little text notification on any major changes your choices have wrought about but I found it useful though this seems like it can be disabled from the gameplay menu too in order to increase immersion and just try to read NPC's and how they talk and react to what you say. (Animations, aren't exactly the best for trying to do this though but the dialogue is pretty clear on how characters feel.)

On the downside the combat is pretty rough with focus on combo and special attacks to really do damage in between "filler" light attacks to build said combo bar, early on just as with their past games everything can kill you and very quickly at that, saving often is recommended because you will run into problems even in the earlier areas of the game, also there's a ton of loot items and stuff to craft but as usual don't expect to run across powerful weapons and especially more powerful armor just like that, has to be earned from the factions from how things appear so far and you can't strip dead motherfuckers of anything but smaller loot from what I have tested so far, guessing mission critical NPC are also immortal even if you ground stab them after beating them into unconsciousness.

Oh and dialogue choices can disappear completely depending on what you select, talking to named NPC's might be a bit difficult when you have something that appears as a statement and then the choice below appears as a question so you select a question and then the statement option is gone. Guessing there's a lot of quests and ways to accomplish these but it seems very easy to miss out on things though this has been true for some of the past Piranha Bytes games too but it's something to keep in mind.

You also get a lot of skill points from leveling up but you need very high stats to learn actual skill and the trainers will charge a lot of money for it too so getting leveled up is a bit slow on it's own but learning skills is probably going to be even slower and I am pretty sure there's faction specific skills too and not just in the way they use Elex or what sort of armors and weapons they prefer though that factors into things too.

And the DOF effect is way too strong and blurs everything around the player character, I'd recommend disabling that, INI file is fully editable too but I only upped shadow resolution a little bit so far, will spend more time going through it later on as it looks very similar to how you could tweak the Gothic and Risen games but there's some new options here to have fun with.

I've always thought that it's pretty ridiculous...You kill a dude wearing armor and stuff and you can't take it off...It's just wrong. The solution is to make proper, really powerful armor and weapons available 1) via quests and improving your rank in a guild\clan you've joined 2) and via killing really tough bosses , and let us loot junk armor from ordinary dudes for sale or dismantling them into crafting pieces

Definitely feels like a classic PB game. I like the "feeling" I guess but it feels a bit too clunky for todays standard tbh.

I'm giving this one a wide berth, then. This is the single most annyoing "feature" ever in an RPG.

Yeah even if the armor would need to be refitted or repaired before it could be worn it would have been nice to be able to take down this armored up dude and get whatever he had but nope instead the armor is basically glued to the body and the weapon is nowhere to be found (Differs, for some of the PB games you can get the weapon though Gothic 3 for example "solved" balance by giving you a broken variant that only did half the damage.) besides taking down a warlord or other higher tier character would require the player to also be pretty tough particularly when the rest of the village and everyone around joins in on beat the new guy to death and take all his money. Razz
(Which happened in the earlier games until you earned a few levels, at that point they started finishing you off instead. )

But Piranha Bytes has armor as a major progression point, there's some basic stuff you can probably get but the good gear requires faction service and a quest to run all the way to the opposite end of the map buck naked and killing a black troll or similar bare-handed before you can be considered for entry as a basic bitch of whatever the order of assholes you signed up for. Razz
(New guy, do EVERYTHING!)

Feels good though when you actually have that armor that isn't some basic leather or work clothing ha ha.
(Weapons aren't all that much easier either but can at least be found, all but certain armor is still going to be rare and almost milestone worthy in this game too like you really accomplished something.)

EDIT: Also while the nameless protagonist will undoubtedly be powerful only the one true original nameless hero from Khorinis was powerful enough to have hair!
(Kinda lost the ponytail as of Gothic 3 though as a sign of plot critical regression, wasn't even crushed and haphazardly resurrected either no it was some lengthy sailing journey instead and leaving all the treasure on the boat which then is stolen never to be seen again.)

Hello to every one. Smile

From what I have see it feels like Gothic 1, in what extent I don't know.
Even the story have similarities.
I like that.

If you understand it, you should get the german version. The voices are alot better than the english one. PB games are the only ones i actually play in german. Usually i hate the german dubs.

I don't mind the voice acting for the main guy as much as i thought i would, he sometimes reminds me of the Gothic 2 (and 1 perhaps, can't remember) voice actor.

I do find that the conversations so far are a bit too long, lots of words, little is actually said. Unless there's great voice acting and especially great writing, then perhaps less would be "more".

Game is decent enough, i like how difficult it is to explore due to how extremely dangerous the wild life is.. Combat is terrible, seems worse than Risen, but like always in these games you need to upgrade your weapons / skills to know for sure how good or bad it is.

Having a jet pack in this type of game with lots of vertical exploring is really great.. will really miss it once i start playing Skyrim or whatever again Wink

Why can't they hire some ppl to make the combat decent. This is worse than games from 1996.

I loke it a lot so far. It's the technically dated and junky experience I was expecting, but filled with PB goodness. There are a few things that annoy me, like the fact that the game kinda forces you to go to berserkers first and that double tapping for dodge can't be disabled.

ugh this is a deal breaker for me, double tapping should only be used in 2d fighters/ sidescrollers, fuck that in a 3d game.

I managed to stomach Risen 2 for quite a bit, but this clunky mess is just too much. Staying old-school just for old-school's sake doesn't really serve much purpose. So many games have nailed third person combat far better in the time since PB's glory days...yet they insist on retaining these clunky ass combat models. Is it because they want to appeal to their fans, or do they just not know how to implement it better?

I can never be free, because the shackles I wear can't be touched or be seen.

I suppose one could use autohotkey to turn this shitty double tapping into pressing just one button to make our character dodge..

I think i dodged accidentally about 20 times in 10 minutes...
Combat was fine in Gothic days but this is too much, especially with the weird ass camera movement.

Yeah... think I'll wait until they patch all the bullshit out and add some toggleable options (re: that double tapping dodge BS, WTF?) before trying this one out.

Anyone else noticed that even when you have a controller, the character still walks in an 8 direction system but nothing in between, feels so clunky?

That's horribly annoying, especially because when you jog, it works normally Confused
