I am surprised there is so little interest in this game/thread. I expected this thread to be one of those Nfohump epics...
Is the game really that mediocre?
I am with Russ concerning the setting, I too hate that. Would much prefer a medieval setting.

I think we're long past the times when PB games created such waves. There's clearly interest in this game, but it's more akin to indie titles than AAA blockbusters - it adheres to very specific tastes, it's created for a group of people who are happy to pretty much replay the same game since 2001 (which I'm happy to be a part of). But that same group also has been burned one too many times. With Risen 2 especially, but I also remember being severely disappointed with Gothic 3, and original Risen's second half wasn't very good either. Risen 3 I actually liked quite a bit. But if you're looking for the reason for carefully regulated expectations, there it is.

Anyone else surprised of how early you get the jet pack, like 5-10 minutes into the game?? Very odd design choice, not even a quest to find the parts or anything, it just lays there intact. It would have felt really fulfilling to get that a little later on, and feeling free to explore hard to get to places. Now it's instead just something you expect to have. PB usually do a good job with these things, but not here.

Don't you read. We were really lucky for the thief to drop it right at the spot where we needed it.

@Reg67 Hardly a spoiler, rather than a very poor design choice.
@vurt I harshly agree.
Oh god, these fucking 8 direction controls kill me. We're in 2017 PB, even Risen 3 had proper movement...

The first game breaking bug and it's ugly. I can't save anymore, quicksave and manual save don't register.
LE: Apparently the saves aren't in order anymore and quickload goes for older ones.

SpecialK is available via Github.
https://github.com/Kaldaien?tab=repositories
With the source itself via Gitlab.
https://gitlab.com/Kaldaien/SpecialK/tags
https://gitlab.com/Kaldaien/SpecialK/commits/0.8.x
There's a modified version on Cs.Rin because the earlier versions had a bit of a check against Steam_Api.dll for non-legitimate versions of the game so they stripped that out, two specific users were also blacklisted but that feature I believe was removed entirely in a newer SpecialK build.
(I don't check in that often at Cs.rin lately, it's probably still maintained and updated if required.)
It's been incredibly useful so far but it can be a bit difficult to set up for the first time, newer versions also include improvements to ReShade via a modified version that has some changes compared to the official release.
(Performance improvements for one thing, being able to set it up to avoid UI elements too but this is a bit tricky at first.)
There's a good guide here even if it's for FAR which is a version specific for Nier Automata and improving some of the problems in that game, newer improvements to SpecialK has also allowed for more fixes so newer versions sounds like they can fix even more in that game.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=933337066
There used to be game specific threads and guides by Kaldaien too but outcry among the Steam community for things like the Steam_Api.dll check and those two blacklisted users caused some problems with some threads being deleted or unpinned and the initial Github repository was taken down with little prior warning.
I've found the utility really useful for it's extensive feature set, shader editing is what I'm currently testing although overrides to windowed behavior and several compatibility improvements with Steam have also been handy among the many other options the utility provides though this does also make it a bit complex even if a installer software does the brunt work of the initial setup although I prefer to rely on a per-game install by copying the .dll's and loading them similar to ReShade rather than a full global injector but lately I've been sticking this in more and more games.
I still have a lot to learn though on how all of these options works and some games can be pretty specific with what you can override or what compatibility options work and Kal can't exactly buy and test every game on Steam though the program has improved a lot with since it's earlier versions.
(If nothing else the amount of compatibility options allows for most games to be pretty compatible with SpecialK.)
The game specific versions in particular for Tales of Zestiria, Symphonia, Berseria and also Nier Automata and Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD have been very popular for the fixes to these games that are also included.
EDIT: And yeah like many other software such as ReShade the program can be pretty complex if you have never used it before, it took me a good while to get used to it too and I still don't fully understand every option available so there's a lot of room for improvement for how I'm using it and what i know on how it works but even so I've been steadily improving and starting to get a better hang of what it can be used for, lately that's removing things like the UI in some games via vertex and pixel shader usage or perhaps other effects as desired.
Before that it was mostly managing render and display states, setting up as to try and reduce latency for example or managing windowed modes into borderless for games not natively supporting this.
Numerous gamepad compatibility options also exist and the program can also use RAM as a texture cache and allow for loading and dumping textures which has been used for mods for some of the supported games such as Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD and full re-textures for major characters to name one example.
So it's pretty comprehensive but yeah as I've mentioned it can be a bit complex too especially when setting it up for the first time and starting out with how you're configuring and using it. Kal also had to implement a number of compatibility fixes for third party software and also OS's such as Windows 7 which by default lacks some of the features SpecialK makes use of and which comes standard in Windows 8 and newer.
EDIT: And in addition to the in-game GUI the utility also has OSD support for showing hardware statistics and other information, previous versions ran via Unwinder's Rivatuner SDK but the newer ones use a different method.

Yeah, the "vintage effect" in this case plays a role in the overall interest, though while it's a curse for many (the majority), it can indeed be a bliss for whoever is looking forward to experiencing classic RPG vibes that can't be found anywhere else these days. We like it rough(tm) should be our slogan.
I really can't wait to put my hands on the game, but at the same time I'm overwhelmed by all the new releases, it feels like christmas yet with the limited amount of free hours one needs to distribute 'em wisely and manage priorities. First world problems, but still problems! The time machine prototype designed to stretch days to 72 hours is not proceeding as steadily as expected either, dammit.

The game is definitely growing on me!
Im about 8 hours in now and i have a companion. Now i finally don't have to skip anything bigger then a rat anymore and i can engage some fights. Although the fights are mainly me running around in circles (screaming like a little girl) with all the aggro while my companion does the damage
So unless he dies, what he does pretty fast, i can *manage*.

So, how buggy is the game compared to previous PB games?
Can it be enjoyed already, or better to wait some months for patches?

You need to earn Duras' trust with a quest. Go to the berserker stronghold and find the warlord's house. You'll find him at the stairs below the house. Talk to him and do his quest.
