And there is a chance that savegame will get corrupted and later patch won't fix it and then you need to replay it from the start, so it's better wait a few weeks.

I like it a lot. The RPG part is surprisingly well done for this kind of hybrid game. It's well written and fully voice acted (not in an amateurish way), the story is intriguing, the graphics are great with tons of details and the progression system is quite ok. It's a rushed game tho and unfinished (this aside of the multitude of bugs).
The character's models and portraits repeat a lot. There are plenty of important NPCs without portraits. And apparently there should have been some sort of reputation system for companions that would have changed dialogues even more but it's nowhere to find.

I really like this game, and I have always liked the Spellforce games, but the little bugs have started to add up into frustration. I would agree with the others that say to wait, a month or so would probably be best, if you want the smoothest experience.
I never hit a game breaking bug, but here are some of the bugs I experienced:
• Every follower quests getting hung up at various points (even after the main fix, the orc wont finish his quest) so I could never unlock their special (still cant on my tank).
• The guy who makes half of the artifacts, locked up during a dialog, and couldn't be talked to. I guess they fixed this, but the fix was too late from my game.
• A couple quests that could not be complete (now fixed).
• In the last two maps, my party would randomly lose line of sight, and then gain is back after X amount of time, so I had to have some troll trooper follower me around.
I was able to pretty much ignore the RTS part of the game on Hard difficulty, so they might do some re-balancing, once they get a handle on all the bugs. Playing a Tank / mellee dps / 2 casters party could pretty much walk over the last half of the game. The elemental skill tree on the PC, is straight OP. I can march my party into a base and chain cast Meteor Storm and Blizzard, while the rest of the party have healing/buff/debuff auras, and cause everything to fall over.

For me Isgram is still blocked on some dialogue after finishing his quest, so can't craft shit.

I thought I read that the dwarf was fixed in one of the hotfixes, maybe it needs a new game, or a save before he stops talking. According to a post on the forum, he makes 9 artifacts (listed below). There are other shrines in various zones that you need to click on, with all the pieces in your inventory, to spawn a chest or npc with the artifact. For the dragon parts, the dragon hunters will make items for you, if they lived. You can resurrect them with the spell in the holy tree. I use Undergast for healing. The dragon armor is the best heavy armor I have seen in the game.
For the Gobo that wants gobo meat, you can enter the dungeon from the front, where you first enter before you find the city. I turned in a bunch from the Everlight dungeon, he gave me a potion, and the quest stayed up. I have not found anymore gobo meat to feed him.
Dwarf made artifacts (purportedly):
Spoiler: |
Blade of the Renegate (1-h INT based)
Hammer of the Smith
Call of the Forest
Executioners Blade
Master of Life and Death
Axe of the Mountains
Greataxe of the Chieftain
Giant's Might
Shield of Benedictus

Still early in the game, I'll wait for more patches.
This kinda already feels more like Spellforce 1 than the addons that came after Spellforce 2. I hope it lasts.

Nice input there. Which other games would you compare it to?
I'll admit I had never heard about Spellforce...

I havn't played this game, but the earlier versions felt like what could have been a fun RPG game with RTS shoehorned poorly on top. Loving what I'm seeing in the screens etc, i just don't want any RTS mixed with RPG.

The "Affinity"skill tree is connected to party member personal quests.

This is the child of SpellForce 1 & 2. But since you haven't played any of those it's hard to make any other comparisons because I really don't know any other hybrids of RPG and RTS. I could compared each component by itself.
The RPG part is similar to BG, IWD, Pillars of Eternity, etc. But expect a rather streamlined experience in terms of character's progression, enemy variety and dialogues. However, within the game's context, but this approach works really well, more would have been unnecessary if not cumbersome aside of maybe more options for the character's progression.
The RTS part is similar to Age of Empires but with properly scaled buildings. It's not really all that complex (neither was AoE ) and the differences between the three playable races are rather small. But since the heroes are the focus point, the armies are complementary adding plausibility and therefor immersion to the game's action.
Neither of the two elements are terrible, but don't expect two fully fledged games in one. However, I can say that the story doesn't cease to impress and I enjoyed the companions a lot. They all got different personalities, meaningful dialogues and a few banters as well.

I would suggest to wait for a few weeks until most bugs are ironed out. The developers are clearly under pressure and while they do fix a good amount of problems with each patch, they also add a few.

Yeah, I'm also thinking about buying it. Has it been vastly improved?

Spellforce took the idea of the RTS/RPG from the lesser know Warlords Battlecry. The original one, not the sequels. But, Spellforce improved it in terms of RPG.
Battlecry had also an interesting idea where if a RTS unit stayed alive for long and got a certain amount of XP, it could be chosen as a hero unit and brought in the next scenarios. Your hero had a decent amount of skills, that could improve several areas: you could create a Jack of all trades, with skills that would help your normal units or create a character class, all mighty hero that would sweep the map in many ways.
