I fully agree, I think it's a very underestimated movie. The amount of detail they put into it to make all scenes end up how they look when they first arrive at the base in the '82 movie is incredible.
It's a movie that doesn't shit all over the original, a rare thing these days.
There must have been a door there in the wall, when I came in.

I loved it. Just had to get that out of the way. I've seen it a number of times before... I've loved all three thing movies dearly, and while the 82 one is the best, the 2011 prequel is a worthy prequel. I think it was great that rather than doing a straight up remake they instead retold a similar story by making a very well thought out prequel that not only keeps the 82 film intact, but makes a serious effort to recreate events seen in that film when they visit the original base. I've said it before, isolated location creature scifi horror is one of my favourite sub-genres, so I'm clearly biased, but I just think the 2011 film is really enjoyable. Good cast, great creature designs, enjoyable action and worthwhile deaths. It's not a classic, it's not flawless, but the film deserved to have done better in cinemas... It's not as remotely as bad as some people claim, I think people were rediculously unfair towards it. Just compare it to something like alien condiment and you can see how damn good the thing is and how much they got right... and how much they could have fucked up so badly...
Yeah it's a pity most of the glorious practical creature effects were replaced with cgi n post, but honestly it's not THAT bad. The designs are still fantastic, and generally they're used to great effect anyway. |
Wait, "all three"? I thought there were only two of them.

There's also The Thing From Another World, a movie from the 50s on which the 80s version was based.

You can watch the prequel first, I think you'd appreciate it more when you see them back to back. Thing 82 begins right where Thing 2011 ends.

Space cop - 3/10
Would've been a solid bad movie if they didn't add forced jokes...
If they cut out some things and did it like the movies they talk about... that were made seriously and not intentionally bad.

Asia journey continues..
Goemon
A really strange film, it took about an hour before I even knew this film was set on earth! That is to say I wasn't sure until someone said they were gonna get all up in Korea's face that the film wasn't a purely fantasy setting with no specific real world country/period... and even then, far as I'm concerned the film is still 95% pure fantasy, even excluding the magic flying ninjas. The costuming and look of the world feel so out of time, they could almost be future fantasy. It makes for a really unique aesthetic. The film itself is also shot really strangely. The closest I can compare it to is casshern, on that its all green screen, but the kind that deliberately tries to look almost cartoonishly fake. I can appreciate that, because the look fits the fantasy in a consistent and coherent way, making the picture very striking and the action completely zany and full on, even when the cgi isn't quite as successful as it needed to be... Especially the fucking bonkers final act. I'd be lying if I didn't have the cheesiest grin ever when the motherfucking gattling guns, complete with tracer rounds, started blasting around the place during a vertical ninja battle.
Crazy, crazy film, with a unique visual aesthetic... and with some seriously heart shattering tonal twists at times

@Mr.Tinkles they should stick to reviews.
They have no problem trashing bad movies, but they don't seem to understand what's behind them. This was an intentionally bad movie, but without the charm. The entire movie they're calling out and telling you what's bad / stupid. If it didn't have those things it would be a solid good bad movie. But they tried so hard. It lacks charm. It lacks everything that good bad movies have. No one was out to make a bad samurai cop, or bad the room. The people behind those genuinely thoughts they were making good movies. So the mistakes and gaffes and the fuck ups were not intentional.
If they trim it down 15 minutes it'll feel like a good bad movie. Remove the forced jokes.
It seems things were kept in for time.

@WaldoJ
Yeah, I've noticed that when someone sets out to make a good bad movie (Samurai Cop 2) they usually just make a bad movie. I'll still have a look at this later tonight to see it for myself, or if it's really that bad just delete it off my HDD. ^_

Battle royale 2
Been a while since I saw it. It's really really dumb, often incoherent, nonsensical, badly written and conceptually poor (even within the framework of the original film)... and yet there's just something special about seeing Japanese teens die, isn't there? I can't quite explain it, but it works in a way no other nations teens ever could match, it's totally surreal. It's the look, the characters, the behaviour, the culture.. it manages to conjure feelings of excitement, terror, thrills and sadness like no other.
Doesn't save the film of course, but it does at least make it bearable.

Some rambling
Spoiler: | Was this really a good movie? I last saw the other movies as a kid so i don't remember jack shit. But i think it started cool with the clown biting that kids hand off and dragging him off, but that's where it went downhill for me. Pennywise himself was one of the worst things with the movie. His character looked idiotic, hard to take seriously. Also, what is he? why does her need to eat people? Why does he have that circus thing? lots of questions, but none answered. The way the movie went, i was expecting answers of some kind.
Well, that was that, but the other problems were the characters. I didn't care about ANY of them. Everyone was annoying in their own way, but perhaps that was the point of the group.
I think the part with the bullies was handled really badly. The babyface went above and beyond bullying and the others didn't react. He even murdered his father and then they stopped showing anything about that group and next time we saw baby face was when he was pushed down the well... Why was he that crazy? Where did the other bullies vanish to after he killed his father?
Also i did expect the kids to be murdered.. At the very least a few of them, but it was waay too forgiving and every single character of the main cast survived after some ridiculous action scene.
I'm sorry, this movie was not very good. |

On I agree, when I first saw it I was 11 or 12 ish in the early 90s I think, and it was effective, as an adult it's ok in a 'one of the better adaptation' ways, but not great.
I don't understand the love for it.
I will say however, I didn't enjoy the book, so maybe my view is tainted by that.
