Microsoft blames Valve for the lack of a Steam version for Age of Empires: Definitive Edition

Age of Empires: Definitive Edition will release on the PC next month and as you may have guessed, it will be available exclusively via Microsoft’s Windows Store. And from the looks of it, the company does not plan to bring this game to Steam. Not only that, but Microsoft blames Valve for it.
In an interview with GameStar, Microsoft producer Jörg Neumann claimed that Age of Empires: Definitive Edition will be using Xbox Live and right now Steam does not support it. Neumann claimed that this is the main reason why the game will not be available on Steam as the Steam version would not work with the Windows Store version.
“There are certain things that are important to us, and in multiplayer games, we want to make sure our fans can play together. Therefore it is not okay if someone buys the game in one store and another in the other, and then – for some strange reason – they cannot play together. We’re totally against it, and our only way to make sure of that is Xbox Live.”
However, there is already a game that supports cross-play between the Steam and the Windows Store versions, and that title is no other than Killer Instict. Now I don’t know how Iron Galaxy has managed to achieve it, but perhaps Microsoft should take some lessons from them? Unless of course this is nothing more than a mere excuse and not the real reason behind the absense of a Steam release for Age of Empires: Definitive Edition.
Does it really have XBox -> PC cross-play? Sounds more like an excuse I mean just release it on Steam as with the first games re-release (EDIT: Second game?) and done, not like the user base of people buying exclusively for GfWL Win10 UWP store version is all that high so if it has to be one API make it Steamworks as that's where the customer base is currently, probably would make several times the sales of having it Win10 Store locked or even timed exclusive.
(COD 2017 had like what? Some dozen players?)
This isn't some next-gen XBox One showcase game either so it won't really attract that many people to the Win10 Store either.
there is no xbox pc crossplay cause its (at the moment) pc exclusive, might change when they add mouse and kb support for the xbox though. then ofc there is crossplay with pc and xbox, same as it is with killer instinct and forza for example
The way I see it, every life is a pile of good things and bad things. The good things don’t always soften the bad things, but vice versa, the bad things don’t always spoil the good things and make them unimportant.
bullshit, has nothing to do with candy crush. its a store bug, any free app will work. start the download and abort it. game will start (and its not related to aoe de, its a storewide bug you only notice if you dont use any store apps normally)
Age of Empires: Definitive Edition could still come to Steam

When asked why Microsoft were focusing solely on Universal Windows Platform, rather than bringing the game to Steam, Isgreen said “I don’t think competition is necessarily a bad thing for the marketplace.” He says that the team is currently focusing on the UWP build of the game, and “just want to make the best version of the game that we can at this point.”
In the future, however, it’s possible that the game could come to other platforms. Microsoft have previously said that Valve are keeping Age of Empres: Definite Edition off their platform, but then said that the game could make the move if Steam and other store fronts opted for full Windows 10 support. Isgreen echoed that statement, suggesting that the current build “doesn’t necessarily have all the functionality we would want if we were to bring it to Steam.”
As creative director, Isgreen has limited control over which platform the game is sold on, but says that "I fully recognise that some people have issues with the Windows 10 Store." Ultimately, he says that once that build is finished, the team will “figure out if we go somewhere else from there or not.” That doesn’t tell us much, but at least it doesn’t rule out the possibility of new Age of Empires games on Steam.
I'm still surprised how retarded the people at M$ are.
It's not that Valve is losing anything at all, by not letting shit like UWP on their platform.
On the contrary, i bet M$ is losing so many sales, because those daft idiots are too stubborn to adjust their gamecode.

That is the understatement of the year. Most people loathe the damn thing. They've managed to create something that is worse than the Google Store. Far worse. And then they wonder why people do not want their crappy client. And decide that there is no interest on PC for x or y game.
