Two questions:
- How long is the campaign if you play normally and explore stuff?
- Does the campaign even have a good story? Or is it just there so you have some string guiding you through the game?

If you don't rush trough it but play at a normal pace you'll get at least 30h out of it imo.
The story is definately there to guide you trough, but it's interesting in it's own right.
The main thing is the gameplay though, the story won't be the reason that keeps you playing - they did a really good job in stringing you along at a proper pacing to keep you exploring places you feel you'd rather not explore.

The exploration in this game is what really pushed me into liking it when it was EA. Now VR seems VERY adecuate, no critical bugs so far and since i stopped playing it months ago i keep seeing so many new things. I cant wait to get home each day so i can play it LOL

Currently scared shitless, i want to get close to the aurora but i know whats there, i dont wanna get close, also the depths, at night, omg. nonononononononon

It's a lot more fun if you follow the story - the first time I played, a bug prevented me from continuing (I couldn't get sulfur - the game just never made any appear) but this time everything works just fine. Very fun, properly paced and lots of stuff to do.

i had some bugs, but i managed to get around them, eventually...

1. falling trough the map...2800 meters?
last save point was 1 hour. so no way im gonna sit there doing nothing..

Solution: enter freecam, go where you supposed to be (use key "4" once to move faster and hold shift) when you are there, press f3 or f8, not shure, look at the cordinates (xyz), now open the console again and type: warp x y z (xyz - the displayed location from the freecam)

puuuuhhhhh, that worked as it should. gotta love that unity engine dev. console. really....

2. on the floating vehicle thingy, where you can make the prawn suite, i stepped on it, looked right side down on the orange air pillow or what it is, one step back and i rocketed into the air for about 600 meters... gladly i did fall into the water...

the second time i wasnt this lucky at all, right back on dat platform just to get me killed

3. Dont go into small spaces with the seamooth and prawn suite...You will get STUCK Crying or Very sad

If you do Smile just use the warp command mentioned before and all is fine again...

what else did happen......

something is seriously strange with the controlls and or with the TABLET usage...often enough i switched out too fast? and i couldnt move my mouse..Or the tools in my hand wouldnt come up when i was not in the water because teh game thought im still in the prawn suite? at least that is what it sounded like.. And this happens sometiimes in all situations, from using the fabricator and such to getting in and out of vehicles..

Oh, and one thing that kinda blew me was in an cave under water..with an energy shilded door, so theres no water inside.. That was in the lava caves, and when i went in there, the fucking fishes followed me into there.. There was no water, just air, and dat fishy predator swan around in the air with his friend blocking my way into there, behind me was an electric eel and i kinda had a hard time in there..Besides being totaly confused why the fish is breathing air and flying...

sadly i have no video footage of those moments. i might need to think about trying shadowplay maybe..

besides those "kinda funny" bug moments im really enjoying this shit...And that comes form someone who hates those survival, eat, drink shit all the time games...

Wich doesnt mean those games are all bad, this one here did it right Smile Im still playing, 30 hours in and still having fun....

Grumpy face anyone??? (i bet ya they did that on purpose)

i think game is miscalculating gameplay time, i started new game today at 14:00, played till 16:00, and save game says playtime is 4 hours and 37 minutes, no way.

Enjoying it so far.

Though after 4h played in total, i had to take a break after every 1h or so. Not sure why - maybe because i'm still clueless on where to go? grinhurt
Went to the second pod from the call, where you find the compass blueprint.

Build some radiation suit and went to the Aurora to scavenge some stuff. Too bad it was nighttime and even with a flashlight i barely saw anything. Then i got surprised by some huge monster charging at me and eating me. Laughing Sad

It took me a while to be comfy underwater. I find it terrifying. Laughing

@ Bob
same, although I also tried it without the radiation suit once where, I met perhaps the same end as you. Not that the radiation suit was helping too much anyway it appears. The second time I managed to get back, but only got a bunch of metal to show for it, as I still had to flee from the dangers. This time I did not run into the larger creature though.

After a few hours now, I still search pretty aimlessly for material. Haven't expanded my actual base either or anything. Only repaired it, build a box outside and a place to build vehicles that I have no plans for...

@Nui
Did you had the whole radiation suit equipped?
I had a breather helmet on at first, which resulted in me still getting slight radiation damage. After exchanging it for the outfits helmet i didn't get any more damage.

I didnt get damage from radiation, that part worked. Its just meaningless if you get caught by one of the larger meaner creatures. Thats what I meant Razz

The game really opens up once you build a seamoth and can traverse the ocean faster without having to worry about oxygen constantly. Then you build a big ass base and throw like 10 lockers in a separate room so you can hoard all the shit so inventory space becomes less stressful too. Next step build some greenbeds and grow Chinese potatoes, those give you food AND water, so food becomes less of a problem too. From this point onwards it's alot more comfy and you re systematically looting wrecks for blueprints and expanding your base, upgrading all the vehicles and tools and just having alot of fun.

the point you have scanned the stuff you have to, so you can build the base...

to be honest, shouldnt take long, you can make a base out of tubes if you want, but if you found teh multi purpose room, you really can start..

so, watch out for an multi purpose room to scan.
im not gonna tell you where or how it will happen, its up to you Smile

if you follow the audio signals from the story it shouldnt take you long..

Melons are the way to go. Potatoes only give +3 water, Mellons give same food AND +12 Water Smile

PS: for those who don't know, you pick up melons by left-clicking OR you can cut them with a knife to get 4 seeds per melon (so 1 bed gives 12 melons to eat and 16 seeds to reseed).

@3E74

I guess being so close to a volcano you are mainly using thermal energy, at what depth is that base?

@Sin317

I initially decided for planting Chinese potatoes instead, because each spot grows 5-6 potatoes vs only 1 melon.
Though in the end I only need like 8 growing spots even for melons, since that is enough for completely replenishing food and water, so I guess I ll go with melons from now on.

Yeah, 1 growing bed is enough to a) completely fill your water and food requirements, reseed it AND even run a bioreactor 100% all the time Smile

So I have 1 of them in each base + a water filtration to have some backup water for longer trips Food is never an issue, because of the improved knife.

Oh and another little hint, use the gravity trap to gather resources quicker. Just place it near resources and everything that can be picked up will be pulled towards the trap and you can simply click everything at once Smile

This also pulls in predatory fish, like the biter and bleeder and they can't/won't attack you anymore Smile

I have a bit of a deep sea phobia and I gotta say, at depths of 800 to 900 meters, this game is the stuff of nightmares. I will have to do something else now for 30 mins before going to sleep cuz I really don't wanna have nightmares based on this. Most unsettling game I ve played since silent hill 1 and 2. I will never try this in VR, ever.

Am i supposed to find something in that huge cave of the first call? Went in there two times, but everytime O2 is getting low before i can explore everything.

And Subnautica gets into trouble like so many other game these days, wonder what this is going to lead to then.

Some forum posts or what they are from one on of the sound designers of the game this time.

EDIT: Era can be useful for game information and news but in other aspects they are pretty much NeoGaf 2 and things like this pop up frequently, at least it does give some entertainment reading the comments, well they're a bit less ban happy I suppose but that happens often as well.

Yes, i do use thermal energy...For 2 reasons.
1. Its a vulcano down there, so best solution.

2. Someone really does not like the humming from the nuclear reactor..
maybe spoilers?!?!?!

The depth of that base is around 400 meters. Kinda on the edge of the map..

PS.. Very Happy , yay the Forum is up again...

Edit...
Woaw, you can stack those huge aquariums Smile

Now, i just have to find some Leviathan Eggs Smile I mean, why else would they allow to stack them and make "ONE" really huge Aquarium out of it???

Damn, im gonna search some Eggs now Smile
