Hello,

My current monitor is dying (takes an hour to start after flickering non-stop). Sad So I'm looking to upgrade to a better one since it's been a very long time and out of replacement warranty.

I have a couple of questions if anyone can clear. Smile

1. Ultra-wide monitors are good for media and work? 2560x1080 at 29" inch.
2. ACER good? 2K monitor 31" inch 3-5ft away? Too much eye strain or will be it fine? Link: https://www.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/model/UM.JE1AA.B01
3. Curved monitors?
4. Or just get a standard 27" 1080p display?

Any other suggestion on what I should be looking for while getting one? It's been almost a decade since my last monitor purchase.

Thank you.

Personal recommendation would probably be 120hz if the budget allows for it, IPS or VA for panel type and 8-bit + FRC for 10 bit dithering or 10-bit native although it's more expensive.
(Fuck color banding and compression artifacts ha ha.)

Ultra wide is popular but I am not too sure how well current games support it without relying on various tools and other hacks, also not too knowledgeable about curved designs but I know they are also seeing a increase in popularity allegedly having a more natural viewing angle.

HDR or 12-bit and above is costly and implementation on PC is a bit so-so (Thanks Microsoft.) plus it's probably better on the TV front than for display monitors for support and various vague standards really.

There's also lists like these:
https://www.blurbusters.com/faq/120hz-monitors/
https://www.144hzmonitors.com/best-gaming-monitor/

TN has a fast response time and even more when "overclocked" so that's why they are often seen in these charts even if the panel has other drawbacks, though so does IPS in various forms and VA.

Review sites and user opinions can be really informative too.
http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews.htm

If you find a monitor you like it doesn't hurt to look up it's model in more detail such as panel type and either professional reviews or opinions from other users whether it's common issues or calibration tips. Smile

EDIT: Yeah it's mostly just generic advice but it's something to start with, can't really recommend a specific model directly though other posters here on these forums (The few we have that are still actively posting at least. Razz ) should be able to offer more insight and information on the subject. Smile

EDIT: Oh yeah Free and G sync are good too but also sees a increase in cost.
(Excellent features though, has to be seen and can't really be explained but they're highly praised features.)

EDIT: And for resolution and width 27" to 29" and then 2560x1440 16:9 or the UW 2560x1080 are both a big upgrade over 1920x1080 even if it might seem so at first but they also require more from the GPU owing to the increase in total pixels. Very Happy
(Still less than 3840x2160 or 3440x1440 but it does need more GPU power than 1080 so that's important to be aware of.)

Ultrawides are great for work - you get more screen real estate, no downsides in that.
For media... do you mean like watching videos? It's perfect for movies, since they are basically in ultrawide format, so you get the movies to fill the screen. TV shows and most standard videos, on the other hand, are 16:9, so in full-screen you get bars at the side and no real benefit.

Curves are good for ultrawides, not much sense for 16:9 monitors, but no real harm either. Unless the work you do has anything to do with engineering design and such: they are allegedly a hindrance, since the image is curved and you want them straight lines.

At 27" I would go for 1440p. Though I wouldn't go for any 1080p display at this point personally. Especially if the intention is to keep using it for another decade Smile

Thank you.

1. Ultra wides are neato but YOu might encounter compatibility problems with some games. Also - many content that does not fit on it, will leave You with borders on the sides. I am not a fan of those but some people love them. They are best curved but curvature cause bigger chance to encounter dead pixels. I think 29" ultrawide is same height as 24" 16:9 so 2560x1080 should be ok.
2. This Acer just as good/bad as any other I guess... Just standard 60hz ips with shitty non height adjustable stand. Res is ok although it's about the same dpi as 24/25inch 1080p monitor. So imagine sitting in front of just bigger monitor. No font will be smaller or bigger.
3. Curved are again, a subjective choice. I think they can be immersive but ips curved monitors suffer from corner glow galore and va curved monitors can have weird pixel alignment (samsung) or dead pixel on any type due to curving process.
4. I think 27" is a bit big for 1080p At that size I would get 1440p or a smaller monitor (25" or 24").

-I had 24" iiyama va whiich was 1080p 60hz. Va monitors are ghosting/shimmering in motion as fuck on sharp textures or black/color transitions. It had a nice image quality and solid 3000:1 contrast but it was "not optimal" for gaming.
-So I wanted best picture quality for reasonable buck and ordered newest dell ips U2417H. Standard 24" 1080p, 60hz with modern ips. It fucking sucked!
The damn thing reminded me why I sold my old ips and bouht VA iiyama. I hate those overrated ips bullshit monitors. They crush blacks so watching shows or movies SUUUUUCK. There is almost always visible corner backlight bleeding at least in 1 or 2 corners,. mostly visible in dark scenes in movies) and the worst offender - All ips have "IPS GLOW" which is a nightmare and makes me question all the "ips have best viewing angles" people. Ips have the WORST viewing angles. And I had like 3 of them(ips) + few in work. The ips glow is always present. Even from the front and it always looks like if something was reflecting in Your monitor. Especially bad at night but if You turn on the lights to reduce ips glow, You make black details disappear. it is a real shame EIZO is no longer selling IPS monitors with polarizer filter which eliminated glow. I think it was too expensive.

The question is - do You want a gaming monitor or office/media consumption? I do not recommend IPS for anything. It is only good if You work on daytime photos of fields or something Laughing

For media, internet, movies - VA monitor. It might suck for gaming but that contrast is fucking amazeballs. Look at this. When I got iiyama VA monitor, I took this photo of direct comparison. Both monitors run at about 20% brightness and yet ips still suck.

ofc ips don't look THAT bad in real life(worse on camera) but it is close to comparison.

Anyway - to the point Razz - I purchased AOC AG251FG. A 240hz, gsync, TN 1080p 25" monitor and found it to just crush the Dell u2417h ips. I still had that iiyama at the time and surprisingly TN looks very close to VA monitor nowadays. Colors are good, contrast is surprisingly good, there is no ips glow(va also had a bit of glow), no corner backlight bleeding and viewing angles problem is overhyped to hell.
It looks 90% just as va when looking at it normally on static picture but is much better in motion.

But tell You what - that high refresh rate is the best thing. Holy fucking shit, I did not believed in this "over 60hz" bullshit but this is just mind blowing. Even browsing, scrolling, moving the mouse - it's all very smooth and there is no ghosting or trails. You can read text when scrolling and the image is always crips and clear at 240hz even without 144hz strobing mode. For example - at 240hz, there is no ghosting or trails in this test. And the text is readible at 240hz or crystal clear at 144hz strobing mode(buy then gsync dont work):
https://www.testufo.com/ghosting#background=004040&separation=160&pps=960&graphics=bbufo-tinytext.png&pursuit=1
I would say "get that" for anything you do except some critical color work. Colors and contrast is very similar to va and high hz is crazy.

If You do not game, then avoid ips anyway... Get a solid va or tn. VA if You don't game, TN if You do.
edit: And whatever You do - avoid Dell G-sync TN monitors... they do not have gamma osd controls and are washed out. The gamma is about 2.0. All other brands like AOC, ASUS or ACER have gamma settings and 2.2 is usually on one of those settings.

Confused There's nothing inherent in IPS technology that crushes blacks.

Well there is IPS glow which does exactly that, but the crush I am describing is something else:

I was testing VA/TN/IPS and only on IPS, details in a dark scene were not visible.
I was viewing fragments form Punisher movie and Pitch black (so darker movies) and there were scenes where I could not see part of the scene(like wallpaper in background) on IPS Dell U2417H. Shame because it was really sharp and had nice, booming colors.
And a dark game like Painkiller was also showing this lack of detail on ips.
So either VA and TN were showing too much(low factory gamma aboiut 2.0-2.1 is very possible on those panels) or IPS monitor I got had very high (above 2.4) gamma which could still be true so I should correct myself...
Still weird because my current AOC Tn have 2.4 gamma setting and it's still brighter than that IPS.
Difficult for me to test without any gear. But Any IPS I had was problematic for viewing dark content but more so to ips glow rather than crush when I think of that now. Maybe that one last was indeed fucked.

edit: anyway - no monitor is perfect yet... Tn also suffer from it's own problems like viewing height gamma change (ok when viewed normally) and possible clouding. But it's not a devil everyone says it is, while IPS is not the end all, be all many hypes it to be.
I would say that VA is our silent Savior here. Maybe high hz VA monitors don't have as bad ghosting at 60hz?
I've bought what I did because I wanted G-sync 1st priority. 144hz ips g-sync monitors have terrible qc problems since they all use the same shitty AUO panel and it's a lottery. And g-sync VA monitors are curved which i did not wanted. Just when I was testing stuff out, 240hz TN g-sync came out... 1/3rd cheaper than 144hz ips crap...So here I am.

IPS glow is a real thing. But black crush must had been something with your unit or units. Fucked up gamma happens.

(Off topic: Some months ago I got a laptop (with IPS) with a ridiculous gamma, anything a little dark was 100% black lmao. I returned it and I was told "well, we kinda see what you mean, yes, it's not ideal, but there's nothing 'broken' about it. So we can't take it back!"

Meanwhile you couldn't use it for browsing Facebook or something because an enormous amount of detail was entirely absent. Faces in the shadow were just black!

Fortunately after I insisted it was fucking unacceptable they told me they would be making an exception(!) for me and took it back.)

A higher black level (i.e. lower contrast ratio) can make the screen look "flooded" and make near black details harder to see.
I can accurately reduce contrast on my monitor, like on KCs photo the camera easily picks up the differences:

https://imgur.com/a/zaIVq

Contrast difference like that are actually most noticeable at near black shades, only then at zero black and in fact not at all with bright scenes.

I'm getting a nice deal ($200) on 29UM69G-B / 29UM59-P. Should I pass or watching TV isn't too bad with black bars?

But is it okay for day to day use? Mostly work and TV. Gaming is not a priority. Maybe couple hours a week.

I tried it before on 1080p 32" inch but somehow didn't feel comfortable. The display wasn't too good and felt laggy at times. 42" inch at a close distance and using 8-12 hours seems too much strain.

I don't fancy 100hz and stuff since I can't get enough fps anyway nor I play competitively. My current specs: i7-2600K+GTX 970 SLi

Purely looking only for work and some media (TV mostly). Very less gaming. I use f.lux to adjust the brightness/colours if that matters.

With that monitor, it's going to be pretty much exactly like watching it on a 23" 1080p 16:9 display. It's not bad in itself, you just don't gain anything from the ultrawide and obviously a 27" 16:9 monitor will give you a bigger picture. I suppose the black bars might have a psychological effect, if it becomes hard to ignore them. We watch movies all the time with black bars with on HDTVs though, so I wouldn't think it's a big deal.

That said, for your usecase I would honestly prefer a 27" 1440p over a 1080p ultrawide, since you get more vertical screen real estate and you get a bigger display for watching videos full screen. In that regard, that Acer you linked is a better option. The 29" 1080p ultrawide's only real benefit is for gaming due to wider FOV - you lose in everything else.

For reference, as already mentioned, a 29" 21:9 display is like a wider 23" 16:9 one, and
34" 21:9 is a wider 27" 16:9.

Ideally, you would go for a 34-35" 1440p ultrawide to get the best of both, but those are pricier.

@MinderMast I checked out UW monitors today and man those look really nice. Sad The 34" inch was AMAZING albeit pricey and black bars.

Anyways, thank you. I'll go with 27" 1440p for now. Later get UW if needed.

UW is amazing, i love playing on it, however they're pricy. I stand by higher Hz though, they really make the difference especially if your hardware can back it up. 144hz is so nice.
