Need to play this series. Only finished the first game and although it had super weird gameplay where you had to hit enemies diagonally, it was actually pretty fun and engaging.

Diagonally is the second game, from behind is what you have to do or off center at least to not get hit yourself.

After the first two games though it changes to side scrolling though Oath (Ys3 remake.) and Celceta (Ys4 remake.) use a more traditional isometric perspective.

Ys2 is one of my favorites with Oath probably the overall best but Origins is also up there.
Need to wrap up Ys 8 too.

Ys6 Ark, Origins and Oath should be the order those three were released in meaning the mechanics got more polished and improved overall.

Ys7, Celceta and Ys8 being the current trio of similarities although Ys8 is a leap in tech in comparison to the previous games being designed around handheld hardware.

Though I think it's Trails of Cold Steel 3 where handheld was finally dropped altogether after multiple limiting factors of trying to keep these hardware restrictions without too many cuts so now it's PS4 only.
(And who knows who'll end up licensing that over in the West, I'm assuming NISA and hoping they'll do a better job but we'll see.)

Ys1 is around 6-8 hours but features the fucker of all backtracking which I really hated. Ys2 also has a really expansive end-game area but it's manageable and the improvements to gameplay even if it retains bump-based combat are really nice.

Interactivity too, bribing and burning almost every villager for various reasons and rewards or other means though the game is also longer and the start is a pain in the arse before you power up.

You'll see that a lot in the earlier games though, level up once or twice and wreck shit and then new area and run in fear and repeat...until the boss battles.

Oath and Origins are among the tougher in terms of bosses but they're all fairly challenging unless you're crazy over leveled and the games also pull no punches when it comes to difficulty with anything above normal upping speed and also adding new damaging moves to bosses making it very challenging but quite rewarding if you aim for hard or nightmare but the earlier games really make that difficulty a real challenge. I always loved the Ys games, the first one I played as a kid on my Sega Master System and was initially pretty weirded out by the concept of running into the enemies slightly off center without hitting an attack button.
Music was always great, I will always remember the iconic field music from the first game:

Intro video is quite impressive too for the older versions.

1989 (JP, Nihom Falcom) - 1990 (US, Hudson)

As is the soundtrack.

That's funny - when I hacked my PS Vita last sunday, this was one of the first games I downloaded and installed on it to test the hack. Looks like a fun game.
