well its true and its the law. i personally know two cops which have fined a lot of people in the last months (cause they must do that, not because they are assholes.they are, but that doesnt matter here Very Happy)

and now tell me only one reason you need a tablet in the middle of your car

One reason is of course for Google Maps. And since i often come across traffic jams on the Autobahn, i want to be able to find detours in a quicker time. Instead of having to pull my smartphone out of the bag, attaching power cable, etc - during the drive.

But i will also use something like Spotify to have a much bigger variety of music to chose from. Instead of listening to basically the same songs since over a year from my USB stick. Very Happy
It will also hopefully let me find more interesting music groups that way. Since i rarely listen to music when at home.

And then i plan to read out and display some stuff from my car via the ODB2 port. Though the one i bought doesn't seem to be able to read the more interesting things, like error codes and status infos about car parts. Or it's a limitation because i used the free version of Torque.

I chose a tablet because i can use it way more freely than some crappy build in Android-Radio with bad performance, no updates and other crap attached to it.
For example i can just remove the tablet, and take it on a journey or when i need to wait somewhere for a longer time. Also i read that those big and flashy 2din units attract funny thieves.
A good Android unit would also have costed much more than the tablet. I got it for like 129€. Excellent performance and bright display. Even better than my Galaxy Note 4. Laughing Sad


Most of the tablet controlling can and will be done with the steering wheel controls - Bluetooth FTW.

That's actually pretty cool and shows how behind I am on the tech in cars. Didn't even think about bluetooth controls. Razz

I agree anything that is easy to get out of the car is better not only for the scumbags around but like you say having it around all the time even outside the car.

What tablet is that btw?

It looks surprisingly good and the screen is bigger than anything you could have fit in there, even if only a little. Plus you can take probably easily take it out for whatever use one could have for a tablet?

This really will be a consideration at some point. Maybe higher up somewhere for easier visuals during navigation.
Atm I have a smartphone holding device of the suctioning type, which is annoying to use, but the screen is almost in front of me.

First of all Bob: Just because you are annoyed doesn't give you the right to be so insulting, so please keep that to you.

Second: Is there something permanently attached to your odb2 port? As that would drain your battery when not actively using it, right?

Third: My E90 has the worst possible vanilla audio system that I have witnessed and I thought the F36 was bad. Anyway, I'm thinking about installing the alpine hifi system and a proper radio (with usb/bt support).

Anyone with a suggestion for a radio? The current sound is just terrible (so I assume than an EQ could help a little with that) and I need the BT to make phone calls during the drive (should also have a decent microphone). Later on I'D install the aforementioned alpine hifi system.

Good point. I'm not sure if it goes in standby by itself. As i know some of those connectors have an extra button on them to power them off.

Well, after quite some research i chose the JVC KD-R981BT for myself. Doesn't look so good at the front, but since most of the time a tablet is in front of it, it doesn't bother me.
For me it was important to have simple to use BT connectivity and good sound.
Also good price, since i got it for like 76€ from Amazon WHD.

Sound itself was a definite improvement over my stock radio. Though bassy songs could still prove problems, but that's more an issue of the stock speakers.
