Waaaaaay to expensive. My price limit is after taxes 52.000€ incl. all extras. And with some of those cars - I'M LOOKING AT YOU AUDI! - apparently even something as basic as a park distance control costs up to 780€ EXTRA
BTW automatic is a must. I mean, manual is fun, but the automatic is just much quicker and if you want even more economical.
...
there are 2 types of automatic gearboxes:
1 Torque Converter
2 DSG
1 is 100 years old, switches gears for ~2 seconds, weights ~80kg, needs maintenance 5y
+ very smooth but slow operation
- high energy loss (15%) except when cruising
in reality rises fuel efficiency by 1-2l/100km
2 is fairly recent, switches gears for 0.2 sec under limited conditions, weights ~100kg, may need 2y or 5y maintenance depending on type (wet/dry clutch)
+ very fast gear switching when accelerating in a straight line, but not very gentle operation
+ almost no energy loss
- may take longer than 2sec to switch a gear it didn't anticipate to prepare, like going down 2 gears etc.
in reality is almost as good as a properly operated manual transmission fuel wise, if you are fast with the manual you will get better mileage
BMW has primarily the 1-st type (ZF)
Audi has primarily the 2-nd type (DSG)
Both cost 2000+ eur, which can be spent elsewhere
the factory "claim" that automatics are more economical than manuals is a myth, just as their "claimed" fuel efficiency of 7/100 city driving
their "claim" that auto gearboxes don't need maintenance is BS too
tl;dr: only buy an auto if you can't or don't care about switching gears, or if you're doing a lot of city traffic driving

I have driven type one with the 8 gear sport automatic and no way there are 2+ second gear switches Or does the M240i accelerate to 100 in the first gear, else it would spend 2+ of it's 4.4 seconds to 100 for switching to the second gear?
I drove the DSG from an Audi but it was not their equivalent of the sports version.. It felt sluggish even though the car had similar engine props as my previous BMW (2l Diesel, 190HP).
Apparently BMW are also amateurs for planning to use the ZF for the upcoming M5s?
when you drive a type 1 transmission and you press the gas to accelerate, it says it changed gears, your revs go up, stay there ~1sec while the car (kind of slowly) accelerates then it really begins to accelerate
of course you can accelerate to 4.4 seconds 0-100 in a torque converter, but you never truly accelerate in 100% of the power, as the torque converter is constantly trying to match the speed of the engine like a clutch
I do not know which transmission BMW uses for which model
ZF transmissions are very good in dealing with a lot of power, there are several models based on NM max output they can handle, like ZF 600, ZF 800, ZF 1000 and such
because the torque converter cushions / smooths out spikes in the output of the engine like a rubber/sponge
this is very good explanation on the topic of type 1 Torque Converter gearbox:
after you watch the video, I hope you get the idea how this gearbox wastes 15-25% of the engine output which never gets to the wheels, while the 2 propellers match speeds during acceleration/deceleration
this is a very good explanation on the topic of type 2 Dual Clutch Transmission gearbox:
after you watch this video you will get an idea how the gearbox prepares gears for switching, and that's how it can switch so fast, but if you request a gear that is not prepared, it might take some time..
I'm not saying "FUCK AUTO TRANSMISSION IS FOR PUSSIES" but be educated when you make the decision

But I've driven such transmissions on old BMWs and you think the gear is switched, when in reality the torque converter is still matching speeds like using half-clutch on a manual

If it doesn't hurt your neck then it's not switching well enough!
Magnetic ride is adjustable damper's stiffness, worth it imo if you want to switch from sport to comfort suspension, if you only want comfort - not worth it
metallic paint is much better too
matrix LED is SO MUCH WORTH IT, must get it, it literally cuts the light beam in several sections and can individually shut off each one if there is a car in it so it doesn't blind them
so you can drive on high beams all the time, even in oncoming traffic!!
also get heatable steering wheel, if you get temperatures below 0 in the winter, you'll thank me in 6 months
it goes very well with heatable seats and heatable mirrors
if you're gonna get the automatic transmission, at least get the stop&go driving assist, as in traffic it moves and stops the car on it's own, keeping the distance with the car infront of you, very nice
I also highly recommend the back camera
the virtual cockpit is also a nice extra if you have budget left
Yeah, I think that the A4 as sedan looks lame. But I have to admit that Audi has really nice station wagons, but I would have to leave out too many extras if I took that. Also it's quite big.
The block is good, by that I mean no special reason for the cracks or anything, as I thought it might be corrosion inside the water jackets but it wasn't.
The reason the 2 cylinders were cracked was that the cylinder walls are 5-6mm on one side and like 2mm on the other side. And the side they cracked on is the thrust side of those pistons that takes most of the force when piston moves, the other side of block is probably fine cause the thrust side is on the thick part of the cylinder wall.
Block is now filled with block filler to strengthen it up a bit after the two cracked cylinders were resleeved. Hopefully avoid future cracks now.
Also adding an oil cooler because the bottom end will lose some cooling due to the filler so need to cool the oil better.
One head is fully assembled, second head needs valve springs installed and it is ready to go aswell.
Crankshaft is installed with new bearings, camshaft is also in place. Should get new rod bolts tomorrow so I can start putting pistons back in, and need to fit new piston rings aswell.
Images in spoilers.
Spoiler:
Valve job done, 30 degree "precision" back cut with angle grinder and cordless drill on the valves to improve flow and then lapped to the seat to make sure they seal properly.
Thicker valve springs with more clearance before coil bind, open pressure is almost double from the stock springs.
New bearings and crankshaft installed.
New spark plug wires with packaging from the 70s or something?
New taller and much better flowing air filter to make sure that doesn't stop me on my quest for power! This will be accompanied by a hole in the hood later and a riser under the filter housing.
My dream car is one that I don't need to make payments (pay in full), does not break down, gets me to point A and B , and is affordable , and lasts a long time. Oh wait.. I already have it..Chevy Prizm..

Dream car? I get such weird looks when people ask what car I want the most and I don't have an answer for them.
But I do agree with you that if I need a loan to buy a car, I won't. I want to afford it with my own money or otherwise that doesn't involve going to the bank for a loan.
I don't want some pre built superhypermegacar that drives itself or some 60s Mustang, Charger, Challenger or some other fancy car that everyone else wants too.
I enjoy what I have and build upon that, improving it constantly and thus having my "dream car" at all times, just making it better as I go along.
It's not a specific brand or anything, I had my -67 Fairlane for 7 years before I sold it to buy back this -68 Satellite I have now, sold it a few years back and regret selling it ever since I sold it.
I guess my "dream car" will never be complete or ready really, there is always room for improvement.
Well I could say I have a body style I would like to build upon and that's this, even though I'm not a big fan of 2 doors only. Just something about this style clicks with me.
