Combat is fun, the fights just become a bit too easy. It's been like 10 levels since I even upgraded most of my characters' gear
That sounds quite bad actually, getting awesome new loot and skills is a big part of an RPG What difficulty are you playing on?
Normal difficulty. Loot isn't very interesting in this game, I think...
I disagree, the loot is so much better in the sequel. There are quite a few soul bound weapons with their own progression. There are also plenty of special items with unique stats/abilities which play into classes' strength and even some setbacks which force you to use them carefully. I wanted to categorize all the special items and maybe make a guide about them. But they are so many that I gave up.
Wow, I guess I missed all of that
The inventory is a bit of a mess, with not a lot of sorting options, so I didn't really go to big lengths optimising stats and gear anyway.
Just being able to group weapons or armor by their type would have been something at least.
There must have been a door there in the wall, when I came in.
Truly gone fishing.

You have a few sorting options on the left side of the inventory interface. But the inventory is messy or more like rudimentary because it's using the UI design of infinity games and we are used with better standards by now.
On the topic of items, there are even unique spells which can be accessed through special grimoires. For example, there is a tough fight with a powerful mage at the top of an astronomy tower. The mage drops his grimoire which has his signature spell, a hammer falling from the skies doing quite some damage.
Yeah, but those sorting options are limited to general things like weight and value. Just being able to group by weapon/armor type, with the best sorted first, would have solved many issues.
At the end, I had like 30 grimoires and never looked at them. I only switched grimoires once in the entire game, I think
It's clear there's a lots of hidden content and lore, that I wish they made a bit more visible somehow. Maybe more categories, or more color schemes and icons to indicate different/unique items.

I guess there aren't many items for each type to add such options and they only added general filters (weapons, armors, usable items, etc.)

There is color coding for item's quality. The icons are a bit too small and makes this less visible.

I would like to share what's in store for you in Pillars II over the next several months, including free content and new features!
The first large update for Deadfire will be launching in early June - Patch 1.1. This update contains hundreds of fixes and refinements based upon our internal testing and all the great feedback we have been getting.
Included in Patch 1.1 is a complete overhaul of Veteran and Path of the Damned difficulties. You'll find more enemies per encounter and with new level scaling adjustments the game should be much more challenging. Let us know what you think on the forums - this will be an ongoing process based on community feedback. Secondly, for players who want to play the game for a second (or third!) time, we are adding an option to skip the introduction and jump straight into the second scene. This option will be available on the new game screen and will not require any Berath's Blessings points to activate. Lastly, the team is also adding new cosmetic options for player customization with the ability to change character appearance at any time.
While our programmers get Patch 1.1 ready, some of our artists and designers have had some time on their hands. They've put together the first of several free DLCs for Deadfire, "Rum Runner's Pack" which is coming out today. This pack features Mirke, a new Sidekick, along with a drunken personality idle animation and new alcoholic drinks. We will be releasing even more free DLC over the next few months that will add more items, ship upgrades, crew members, and appearance options. Look for the next free DLC to be available two weeks from now.
...
Another feature that the team is really excited about is what we are calling "Magran's Fires". Similar to Berath's Blessings, these modes can be enabled from the main menu and will add gameplay modifiers for challenges above and beyond Path of the Damned. In addition to the returning Triple Crown and Triple Crown Solo challenges, we will be rolling out challenges themed to Eora's gods, beginning with Berath, Galawain, and, of course, Magran. As always, we are listening to feedback on what you would like to see in future updates.
Version 1.1.0 is almost ready for release. The Devs have been working on this patch for quite a while, and our QA team has been doing the best they can, but we would love to get your help again in seeing if anything has snuck by them.
You can find instructions on how to opt in to the beta branch on this thread.
Due to the quantity of fixes in this patch, we won't be exhaustively listing them all out. Below are all of the features and a small subset of the fixes in this patch. We'll continue adding to this list as we near the patch release.

Quest Issues (Potential Spoilers!)
Sealed Fate now fails if Degnos dies before the quest is completed.
I encountered several quest bugs, nothing showstopping but it bothers me and there's obviously room for rebalancing and expanding the content with DLCs. I'll wait until autumn and meanwhile play PoE 1 (Whitemarch is probably interesting).
The refinement of the combat system made the first game so easy to like? He is right about the writing, it does lack the brilliance of their older games, especially when it comes to main story and companions.
Not sure if it's because i currently have not much time for playing, but my enthuasiasm for this wore off pretty quickly and it's more of a bore now to start up the game.
I'm currently at the part where i have to decide for an alliance for that island.
Even stopped doing many of the sidequests, which i normally must complete in those kind of games to satisfy my ODC.

Same. I stopped because combat was so easy that I just had no challenge whatsoever and it was really boring. I think I'll start over and hopefully after all these updates will get a fair challenge.
I started playing for about 10 hours, but stopped and now I'm waiting for them to integrate all the DLCs and future rebalancing. I played PoE 1 back when it was 1.0x, and now I'm replaying it in the latest version 3.07 and it's way more enjoyable (that said, I could have waited and buy the game in autumn when it will probably be cheaper, but it cost me less than 50 euro for game + season pass so it's not terrible).
Speaking of PoE 1, what a game! Some things are majestic (e.g. most of the characters and quests), some things are borderline amateurish (all dungeon level graphics for example), Endless Paths of Od Nua is a stupid distraction with only purpuse to fund the castle upgrades with its fat loot, but overally (and after a lot of lore reading), I'm not sorry for the money I spent on it (unlike 90% of my Steam library).
Scalawags Pack Free DLC
In conjunction with this patch, we are also releasing the Scalawag's Pack Free DLC! This DLC includes:
Three New Crew Members added to the taverns of the Deadfire Archipelago for you to recruit.
Five New Ship Upgrades, including sails, cannon, anchors, and more added to shipwrights throughout the game.
New Savage personality setting.
Fixes and Updates
