I keep going back to how ridiculous that shit looks in real life!
Haha yep, it really is distracting, mine was an exaggerated jab but it definitely looks jarring in motion (no matter the type of implementation). I think the only sensible way here would be to provide an option to just disable it similarly to all the other driving aids, it should be very doable and everyone will be happy. Either that, or a specific antiHalo mod will come out within five days after the release date
Right, make it "fade out" so it's not seen, like it's possible with other elements of the vehicle. But I can't imagine I'd watch a real F1 race ever again with that shit.
TBF, the racing doesn't seem affected, the OZ race looked fine. I would like to think over the years they'll either streamline the design, or throw it away and go with a more sensible windshield-type design - and fuck whiny Vettel and Ferrari.
I agree with the need for head protection, I think a lot of complaints are from people who want to see death and blood - but I don't think the halo is the right solution, as it olnly offers minimal protection against large incoming impacts, and does nothng for smaller items, or stationary collisions.

There wasn't really a need, it was a reaction to Bianchi and Wilson. Only one of them could have been prevented with the HALO and it was in a different sport where the nature of most tracks (ovals) makes these things more volatile than on an F1 track.
As freak the incident with Bianchi was there could be as freak of an incident where the Halo becomes the problem. I think if we'd be wanting more protection we'd have to care more about the smaller debris in F1.
And no I have seen my fair share of death and blood in F1, I don't advocate for it but neither do I want rushed thought out safety concepts for rare occurrences spearheaded into the sport.
But I find your bit about most complainers wanting to see death and blood quite ridiculous. Most 'complainers' I talk with are bitching about the aesthetics of it and rather wanted a canopy solution like Indy is going after. But that doesn't sound sensationalist enough I guess.
i would say whizzing around at 200mph+ isnt dangerous, atleast not if the drivers are trained properly. its more safe than driving on the autobahn (which is very safe btw, even at 180kmh)
tell me one incident in the last 20-30 years where that stupid halo shit could have prevented anything (and yes im pretty sure bianchis tragic death would have happened with halo too)
Just for the record I'm not agreeing with the halo itself (it sucks), but yes, there have been many tragic accidents and deaths involving wheels hitting drivers (including Senna of course), and very, very near misses that would easily have been fatal if luck wasn't on their side.
Of course this is an overreaction to Jules' death, and no that was down to the stupidity of having a crane on the fucking track side of barriers, AND that the flag system simply didn't work (the VSC came from it, but well, too late obviously), and the FIA were very quicklto do something to be seen improving safety... However, the halo is not the way forward.
F1 Administration are doing everything they can right now to remind people how dangerous and fun it is to watch spectacular crashes. The ridiculous 'action zone' video clips during the map overview is proof that Liberty are just trying to deflect attention away from the halo by reminding people that cars crash and that's 'action'. I am very disappointed with the direction Liberty are taking, and I'm waiting for the day they announce all sorts of safetry restrictions, in order to appease those who are 'concerned'.
F1 is dangerous. It's supposed to be. But it doesn't need to be wrapped in cotton wool and made completely safe. However, head protection is a good thing - if done properly and without reducing the thrill of racing open cockpit. Don't forget, the only reason we're not using windshields is because Vettel said so. Even though it would undoubtably look and work a LOT better than the halo - better aero, better safety, less weight, and still an open cockpit experience.

Really? What a prick. The halo looks goddamn awful.
I think they are going to use a windshield in indycar next year. Seen some footage of it. It looks ok even in onboard cams.

Oh yes I forgot about poor Surtees.. that was incredibly bad luck. There was a similar crash in a different open wheeled champpionship where a car hit a barrier, a wheel flew off right into the path of a speeding car.. it looked devastating.
So yes.. 2 incidents too many.

erm, that Surtees' would have been prevented by the cable attached to the wheels, present from quite some years now
True, but there have been cases of wheels flying off a car because of a not fully secured wheelnut.

Tho it was rather small-ish object so not sure that new thingy would have prevented it.
It would, had the spring hit the halo. Taking the photos of Massa's helmet smashed in the upper left part into account, one can assume the halo in its current form could've deflected the damn thing. However, that's just a big "IF", cause had the spring bounced off the track just a centimeter or two lower, it would've flown right under the halo's horizontal bar and struck Felipe in the face... which could've resulted in a lot more damage.
It's a shame they didn't show the cockpit view - it'd be interesting to see how they're going to deal with the halo mount in the middle of the screen - will it be semi-transparent or thinner than usual... Cause I don't think they'll let people disable it completely - they can't modify the cars in any way - while it'll be annoying to have in front of you all the time.

Yeah, hope it just fades out or something, the best would be an opacity slider of some sort so you can make that choice yourself.
