New item. SVS PB2000 I've only heard good things about this brand so hoping this will replace the wharfDale Powercube spc10 which is more like a big loudspeaker to me then a sub.
It could've, dunno, be a better compact system?...I mean, 2.1, what's the difference?..You get an enormous block of "Fuck you" for your room though (subwoofer).
ASUS X570 TUF GAMING PLUS, 32GB DDR4@2666 ,RYZEN 5800X3D (NO OC),GIGABYTE RTX 4070 Super GAMING OC, Western Digital Blue 4TB 5400RPM + SAMSUNG 860 EVO 500+1TB GB SSDs , OEM SATA DVD 22xNoctua NH-D15 Chromax Black, BenQ XL2420T Case: Be Quiet! DARK BASE PRO 901. PSU CORSAIR RM1200 SHIFT
They are listed for 249€ here.
For that price you can nearly get a nice classic 5.1 HiFi sound system. And if you really just need 2.1, then you will get an even better system.
Though of course those don't have "Gaming" in their product name.
Enthoo Evolv ATX TG // Asus Prime x370 // Ryzen 1700 // Gainward GTX 1080 // 16GB DDR4-3200
Cool idea, but this kind of products always fail to deliver on the actual sound quality, was reading some headfi review from these cans, they have shitty drivers that sounds like crap without the in-house "personalized" EQ setting, and when you enable it, everything is artificially boosted, the bass what they hype on this one is uncotrolled clipping muddy "bass".
At least it sounds cool, but if the idea isn't scientifically sound I dont care.
This industry builds too much on marketing. Just randomly I saw that Elac uses this in their new (?) series:
Spoiler:
Of course they label it as something really amazing and hard to do, so not everyone can pull it off kinda thing. Some googling suggested that is essentially some bandpass design with a passive radiator. I think this just means that they can tune the lower end performance somewhat and have no port noise, because there is no such thing. The latter is probably not a bad idea.
However it isn't magic at all and wether it is really useful seems quite debatable.
Now with waveguides on the other hand there you will find measurements and intuitive explanations why they make sense.
Example of a waveguide: http://www.jblpro.com/www/jbl-story/innovation/technology/directivity/image-control-waveguide
If you can manage to have the same spectral distribution on the listening axis and off axis you are much closer to getting uncoloured sound directly and from any reverberation. That at least makes sense.
I love good deep controlled bass, and that is hard to get on headphones, old kings were JVC HA-SZ2000 (japan import), they sound very good in the bass department but otherwise were bit lacking, ended up selling them because they were too bulky for my head. Anyway there has been new innovations since then, Taction Kannons are supposed to be very good, with good quality sound and very deep bass, since they use vibrations to extend the bass, think no one has done it before.
Since audio listening is subjective and ultimately inaccurate, bringing on the physics side of things is not the whole picture. Taking into account the moire effect, the way audio has been mastered and rounding errors from the samples themselves, it is quite possible to have a subjectively better listening experience due to how the brain processes the audio.
Much like, for example, in a film, a motion blur is expected and more pleasant to the human eye, despite its destructive nature and the fact that the eye can can and does see more details. (One solution is the to up the framerate, in that case, but as The Hobbit demonstrated, people's senses were ill-prepared for that).
Now, I think, in all these "HD audio" discussions, the most important factor is lost, and that is how the dynamic range of the content itself is mastered. For radio, normal audio CDs and digital stores, the content is mastered with a narrow dynamic range so that people can listen to it in a noisy environment and hear all the portions of the track. So the difference between the quietest part and the loudest part is very minimal. It's understandable why it is done; you want to hear everything when driving in the car or in the noisy office or when your wife is yelling on your baby who has spilled all the food on the floor, but this absolutely kills quality.
Compare:
With:
The latter has quiet parts, loud parts, moderate parts. Like a real music should. (Pop is not a real music.)
Unfortunately, these types of masters only exist as part of the whole "HD audio" package. Look how many remaster HDTracks do (http://www.hdtracks.com/). They are not the only ones, but they are among the premiere pushers of properly ranged remasters.
So to you the most important part of HD audio is a quality that has nothing to do with the HD part?
Thanks for the site, though. Used its name to find some release. Now I listen to american idiot in allegedly 192/24bit. The dynamic range meter plugin for foobar doesn't show anything impressive though (9 dB).
The album Thriller has a much higher "dynamic range", but so did its older release I already have. They sound differently, but the mastering is clearly different.
This is a silly sample size though.
American idiot clocks in at a rate of 5507 kbps in its flac format. That is alot for something the audio industry once again didn't try to justify with more than fancy words. My understanding is that I could now just downsample it to 44.1/16bit or something and be done with it.
So scientific tests or GTFO.
Further dynamic range images from my foobar vis, because my examples look even worse (partially due due to lower vertical size)
from MJ's Billie Jeans
Wagakki Band - Senbonzakura (measured dynamic range is 4dB btw)
Its just a white bar ffs
Im sure it would be amazing with a proper recording. At least to me. Here is a youtube rendition of it
This is of course the better compromise. And surely we could resample the crap to something sensible and we'd almost have best of both worlds.

I recently came across another first world problem. We have to bring waste glass to a certain location for pickup. I will soon have the situation where that is not quite close enough to make walking pleasant, but not quite far away to make driving sensible either.

To anyone with Sennheiser HD6XX. How comfortable are those big ear cups when laying down on your back, against a pillow?
I'd use them a lot for in-bed gaming or movie watching, and my current ones also have fairly big cups and end up pushing back on my ear when pressed against a pillow, which is not very comfortable.
Or a suggestion for a different ones that might be more comfortable is appreciated.
