I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere but watch this trailer for the upcoming movie Ultraviolet:
http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/sony_pictures/ultraviolet/
about half way through you're going to see some soldiers dressed in black with a shock rod. Tell me that doesn't look like a Combine soldier in HL2.

Erm.? This movie is quite similar to the directors previous film Equilibrium which I'm *sure* HL2 borrowed from (Giant screens of the dictator dude speaking propaganda, etc). Nice try though?

Equilibrium came out long before HL2. 2002, which means it was probably filiming by at least 2000-2001. Storyboard probably even before that.
Its possible HL2 borrowed from that, or given that there are striking similarities to the Combine soldiers, maybe he's somehow involved with Valve?

Reminds me of Equilibrium and Matrix. I like the way they rolled out of the sphere in that vid.

Ehmm HL borrowed from X files, from commando, from quake etc etc. If you keep taking similarities then you go insane.

Yeah, guys u must be 15-17 y.o. and u ain't seen anything older than Matrix. Troopers with armor and those glowing eyes come from alternative history Japanese sci-fi movies (not anime), they were also used later in Jin-Roh, Wolf Brigade (anime). Check out some fan sites about Jin-Roh to see about those old movies.
Giant screens with dictators can be seen in some anti-utopian films like Brazil and others. Think Starship Troopers if u talk propaganda too.

Hmmm...knowing how crap these types of movies usually are, this movie looks surprisingly good. Hopefully it will be Fifth Element material (is it the same actress?)

if you call that ripoff then everything in halflife from version 1 to version 2 and all addons in between where ripoffs galore. Nearly every fuckin game/movie with villains and evil soliders "ripped off" the third reich. Do you see any ss-fans running around and screaming rippoff???
kids these days, hahahaha

Concepts are one thing to steal or borrow. Its very difficult to come up with a storyline that doesn't involve an element already commercialized in another movie/show/etc.
Its another thing to actually borrow the images used within. The combine soldier that carries the stunning rod in HL2 doesn't wear that suit, but there is another sombine soldier who does and has a dark mask.
They don't like identical, because obviously one is computer generated and the other is a real life Holywood creation, but the mask makes it look very similar, especially since in the trialer, few of the other soldiers had masks like that.

You make too many assumptions. I bet if you checked out the writer's reading material he quite possibly took that trooper style from a book he read or another influence.

well, soldiers with gasmasks and strange uniforms have been around in movies, comics and games for quite some time. I would guess that its either really a direct inspiration or just a coincidence that they came to a similar character design. I mean, in how many ways can you vary a damn soldier in a sci-fi environment???

there's a difference between ripping off and using the basic concepts.
Ripping off I would say would be to do something the same as someone else only changing a small thing. But again using it for their own gain (i.e. to appeal to that group of people too)
Using basic concepts would be for example, having a spaceship land on earth trying to take over the world.
Personally i'd say this IS ripping off half life in a way. Yes maybe half life got it from somewhere else, but since hl is the most popular and most known it's fair to say it's taken over the 'face' of this idea.
Ok so it's not a 1:1 copy or anything but I think it is trying to key into half life 2 fans. I mean surely they can just make up a new enemy soldier rather than using the 'in thing' shich is a stun stick :/
