Jesus its glorious, suddenly my 1950X@4.1ghz looks like core 2 duo compared to this (getting one tho, need it for my work).

Because the single core performance is good enough, now you have double the cores (its multithreaded performance is nearly double what 1950X has), Zen 2 is where the IPC is getting boosted.

and in games worse performance, at the first glance. it boost way more stable but not exactly as high as the old ones. results in less max fps sometimes but a way more stable framerate at all

Still no reason to buy AMD for gaming for sure so got myself a 8700K setup.
They really need to make a competitive cpu for gaming...

You will see and feel zero difference in anything you do with them.
"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

Core i7 9700K Overclocked to 5.30 GHz On Air Cooling (all cores)
You know that 8 cores / 8 threaded Core i7 9700K we mentioned yesterday? Well, it has been overclocked, and the fun news is that a mere simple looking heat pipe cooler was used to do so. The photos are a bit blurry but do tell a tale.
So basically this was posted at Expreview and an unknown guy (at least to us) was able to test the part, as mentioned on air-cooling. that 5300 Mhz he achieved was on all cores, and on-air that is something impressive alright. Like I stated, the photos are horrible as they are grabs from a 10-second video, but the key details can be seen, the model Core i7-9700K, it is an ES version of the CPU with a P0 stepping, 8 core 8 threads, 12MB L3 cache, 3.6GHz base frequency.
In the 10 seconds of video, you can see that he overclocked to 5.3GHz. It is 1.215V, close to the default voltage of Core i7-8700K. previous leaks already mentioned a possible 5500 MHz on liquid cooling. These are of course ES aka 'magic' vanilla samples, spread toa few overclockers by Intel to create a bit of viral activity.

breaking through the magic 5 number, but is it worth an upgrade?

Doesn't like every 8700K even break the "magic 5 number"? Considering they are 4.7 already from factory.
Atleast mine does 5.1GHz @ 1.4V.

Aren't the 9x00-series just Coffee Lakes on 14nm+ process with 8 cores instead of 6? And an i7 K-CPU without hyperthreading? Should be no particular IPC increase, just some slightly better efficiency/TDP-rating (if the process is solid with less leakage). Since they're running on 1151v2 just like the 8xx0-series it seems like it's a small tock where the main goal is to make 8 cores a kind of standard.
It's good in that the more people upgrade to Coffee Lake and upwards, the more incentive the developers will have to properly multi thread their games.

It is also first time intel releases 8-core CPU to mainstream socket, we can thank AMD for that, intel still needs some heavy price tweaking on their "extreme" line up, they cannot compete with AMD price / performance at all, you can get from AMD 32 cores / 64 threads cheaper than on intel 18 cores / 36 threads, AMD absolutely annihilates intel in this department in everything (not talking about high hz esports gaming now).

| Quote: |
A while ago you have been able to read here that Global Foundries canceled 7nm to fully focus on 14nm, as that is the most profitable for them. That's was the first serious industry hint. The 14nm process sees massive productions delays and shortages, as a result, Coffee Lake at 14nm procs have risen in price significantly, some even 40% or 60%.
TSMC reported they cannot keep up with 14nm demand. Intel delays 10nm due to issues and later mentioned that instead of baking some series 300 chipsets chips at 14nm, they now order them as 22nm chip. My Dutch colleagues from the HWI noticed this as well and compiled a list of what is going on with prices of coffee lake processors, and the results are pretty shocking really, this is what has been happening in just three weeks time:
Lowest price with stock
1st of September September 22 Difference
Core i7 8086K € 419 € 459 10%
Core i7 8700K € 349 € 420 20%
Core i7 8700 € 319 € 425 33%
Core i5 8600K € 249 € 299 20%
Core i5 8600 € 225 € 298 32%
Core i5 8500 € 205 € 256 25%
Core i5 8400 € 199 € 279 40%
Core i3 8350K € 174 € 200 15%
Core i3 8300 € 139 € 169 22%
Core i3 8100 € 109 € 175 61%
Pentium G5600 € 89 € 100 12%
Pentium G5500 € 81 € 97 20%
Pentium G5400 € 60 N/A N/A
Celeron G4920 € 51 € 52 2%
Celeron G4900 € 38 € 42 11%
For example, if you are eying a Core i5 8400, then you should know it became 40% more expensive ever since the beginning of this month. The Core i3 8100 is now 61% more expensive compared to really September.
When you average the processors out, you will see an overall price increase of 23 percent, that's for the entire range with lots of fluctuations per CPU. It seems the shortages are substantial on the 14nm production lines, which makes me wonder what is to happen with the pending Core 9000 series launch, which also is based on 14nm coffee lake.
Distributors mention that there will be severely limited stock available for Core 9000 (8-core Core i9 9900K), even less than with the Series 9000 launch, and these processors suffered from shortages in availability for months after their release.
|
Well that's not going to be fun, although it might give AMD an edge now with them able to compete a bit better with Zen+ and the upcoming Zen2 model CPU's for next year.

Prices seems sensible enough.
I'm glad I have a Z370-board (currently with the i5-8400) so I can upgrade to a 9k-series K-CPU next year. I miss being able to overclock the CPU since this is the first CPU in over a decade and a half I've gotten that is non-OC'able but that was for budget reasons as well as it still being a really good price/performance-CPU.
Once thing that is kinda 'annoying' is the massive difference in settings in BIOS when it comes to overclocking after coming from the Z77-chipset to the Z370. There are so many settings that it's ridiculous and I barely know what half of them does.

We can thank AMD for intel releasing this kind of CPU to the normal consumers, its still going to be like 600 euros in here, which is not exactly cheap, double the price of AMD 8 core / 16 thread.
