I like how they claim they can do what they like now since MS will be giving them money. Sure MS will give money and let them do their own thing Either they're the best negotiators on this planet or the most gullible fools.
Though I did enjoy how uncomfortable Sawyer was talking about MS. He comes off as a Linux guy.
Also Feargus comes off as pretty slimy.
My impression is that Feargus is pretty slimy, in general.
After reading Chris Avellone's comments about Obsidian at the Codex, it sounded like this (selling to someone) was coming for a long time. I think Feargus has been looking to cash out for a while, after making poor decisions with a shitty management style; he doesn't get much sympathy from me.
If anyone hasn't read MCA's interview and following posts, from back in may, about Obsidian, you might want to take a look. It's a good read, but almost at book length, at this point. Someone compiled all his posts into a single page, at one point, but I cant find it.
When a violent tremor shatters the islands of the Deadfire, the greatest wizards in Eora seek out the aid of the Watcher. The archmage Maura has vanished into the depths of a newly opened dungeon located in the Black Isles and threatens to awaken what lies forgotten there. Follow Maura's trail and determine the fate of one of the Deadfire Archipelago's most closely-held secrets.
Traverse an expansive dungeon built into the flesh of a sleeping god
Encounter the highest-level challenges yet faced by the Watcher and their companions
Scheme with or defy the wills of Eora's most powerful wizards

The sales are not so bad, RtwP RPGs are not that popular. The support is great, the game has received many improvements after release. I'm planning to buy the Season Pass and give it another playthrough.
Too bad the turn based patch was not something they introduced for the first game as an end of life thing but they were probably too focused already on the sequel at that time.
I know a lot of people like to hate on Josh Sawyer, but this paragraph he ended on: "I’m sure some of the people reading this think they know precisely why Deadfire sold worse than Pillars 1. I don’t have that confidence, which is one of several reasons why I am leery about trying to direct a sequel."
I quite like his honesty on this. In all the gaslighting going on in this industry, this is nice.
IMHO Deadfire just didn't click. It didn't go wrong in just one place. It went wrong on several fronts, but only a bit on each front. The game was just not good enough:
- the setting: sucked ass. Fuck pirates, fuck pirate humor. This is anecdotal of course, but my friends who play DnD type games like the fucking DnD type settings. And they like more serious themes. Pirates are rubbish. Silly rubbish.
- ships: sucked ass. Fuck ships, and fuck the ship mechanics. Time waster.
- companions: rainbow cast. Enough said. They were weak.
- writing: just not good enough.
Overall the game was too safe.
I am certain, that being RTwP had nothing to do with the sales numbers. There IS a market for RTwP - I love it, for example. And Pathfinder, which I absolutely loved to bits, and finished in a time, when very few people managed to get over the last part (difficulty spike), had something Deadfire didn't.
Pathfinder had vision. It wasn't safe. It was a passion project, it was everything games today are not: long, complex, buggy, hard at times. But dude! It was fucking rewarding to play. The payoff for playing "well" was huge and rewarding.
There is no one thing, that caused Deadfire to fail. It just wasn't that good. I tried to finish it 3 times but couldn't.
I have the same problem with Outer Worlds - got bored. And it is the setting and writing, that I hate. I just don't give a fuck about these words and the characters within them. They are shallow.
I don't think most of the things you listed influenced that much, if at all The game got good reviews from journalists and gamers alike.
I would go with the setting. There must be a reason we don't get many pirate games if any, right?
That was my first point as well.
I never understood why pirates are supposed to be fun. The pirate themes are just ... not that cool.
Same with colonialism themes.
Have you ever sat back in your chair and thought to yourself "Well, that's just my opinion"?. I have the feeling that many people here think their opinions are in sync with the population at large.

Obviously that is opinion, my opinion to be exact. Thought that was obvious
