Why?
They two had completely different visual styles and art directions, and the original was much more interesting at both.

The overall tone was very similar, really loved 2049. I don't like it more than the original though, not sure how you'd top something like that.

2049 was visually much more striking, cohesive and atmospheric. Guessing you both are liking the retro-futuristic vibe of BR1 more. Can't really compare it to the industrial sci-fi ton in 2049 though.

1 and 2 are still amazing.

2049 is most recent.
Even though a failure.
But most recent that the millenials can relate to in this anime.

Should keep is blade runner inspired, but needs to jog the noggin for weebs who only watched blade runner in anticipation to 2049.

If style is good, and pacing is good... need more cyberpunk anime anyway.

I’m not saying it looks bad. I just didn’t feel anything unique in that art direction to me, whereas the original is still unique in its vision, even after all the rip offs. And I’m not really a fan of the original, but the style of it is undeniable.

Anime has mostly done Cyberpunk right, atleast in the 80s and 90s. Meanwhile, apart from Blade Runner and a very few others, we didn't get alot of quality Cyberpunk movies back then, mostly trash.
I loved Blade Runner 2049, the art and atmsphere were different from the original, but the plot and characters were atleast alot better. Let's be honest, the original didn't really have a story, it was all about the atmosphere and Rutger's monologue.

It saddens me that Blade Runner 2049 was not a financial success (to put it mildly), I really adored it as well. Its incredible attention to details, sublime atmosphere and reasoned pacing made it stand out as an immersive philosophical ambiance work like an anachronistic dinosaur in the best possible way.

The movie had nearly zero marketing coverage here in Italy for instance, it basically remained hidden in the theaters surrounded by sci-fi cobwebs whereas your typical superpewhero panther flicks and brainless "comedies" would gather folks en masse 24/7. The original movie (which I love also for the same reasons) shared a similar fate if I recall correctly so it's not even a generational problem, it's just that them hordes of short attention span-equipped replicants will always have the upper hand Cool Face Sad

I watched Blader Runner 2049 with a bunch of fellow techies, ages between say 27 and 32 or so.

None of them even knew the original film existed at all and the 2 big "references" to it, Ford's appearance and the one character I won't name here, were completely lost to them.

"Yes, it's Harrison Ford, so? What's special about him?"

I mean, whether the character is special or not, it's up you, that's not my point. My point is they had no idea this was a returning character!

When I mentioned to them that there is this original film from the 80s..., one of them told me "Oh, right, I heard something like that. But this is the remake, right?" Laughing

In other words the general audience (and these guys might even be a step above mainstream audiences!) have no idea at all about the original film.

That being said the film didn't quite manage to win me over. It was ok, but not great.

But bring forth the anime. Hopefully it's neat.

You'd probably already have better results from 35 and older. Hardly know people who'd mention the movie or know it that are a few years younger than me (or even my age).

It was usually people older than me (I'm 36) and the reason I saw it a few times was largely due to my elder sisters (41,43 and 47). I mean... the movie came out when I was born. By the time your techies were old enough it was probably too ancient. Razz

yeah, it sucks.. i've seen it twice and the second time was the best viewing for me. I feel its a movie i'm gonna watch more times, just like the original. There are not many movies i feel like watching more than twice.

indeed, The first as a better pace story wise. 2049 is a proper sequel --> A very rare case since ... Aliens (2).
Unfortunately the flop means there wont be a third. On the other side there wont be a steady drive to the bottom as in the Alien series .

Mind Is Full Of Fuck
Aliens is not a "proper" sequel—it's a completely different film out of completely different genre.

Terminator 2 is the proper sequel.

How are proper sequels a rare case?!?!
Lol.
Every sequel is a proper sequel. Just cause you dont like the movie doesnt make it less proper.
Its a rare case when the sequel isnt proper like evil dead 2, terminator 3, alien 3, spooderman 3, iron man 3... list can keep going, but list of proper sequels is even bigger.

* Changed thread title with proper name, release year (unless it's being covid-delayed) etc. *

Quote:
Black Lotus will take place in 2032, in the aftermath of the Blackout, and will be centered on a female replicant protagonist. It will also include "familiar" characters from the Blade Runner universe.

Disapointing first ep, really don't like the character animation, uncanny valley with bad lipsync. Much prefer Arcane in the arts department. world looks ok, though.

But I think i will pass on this one, shame. Waste of BR ip.
