When will you understand that's completely *not* their metric? |
Netflix already has made a name for themselves that their movies are crap. Imdb or not, word of mouth is doing its thing. I think they're going to feel the competition of other streaming services a lot more the next year, especially with Disney around the corner.

Also creating fake hype, by inflating numbers (there's absolutely no one who can verify 80 million people saw Bird Box) and buying commercial 'articles' in strategic newspapers ("scariest movie everrr!").
This strategy works, for a while, but word of mouth is still strongest.

Obviously they do data-mining using their own data, but what do the results mean? I watched the movie because I had a subscription and I had spare time. What does that mean though without some kind of rating system? I wouldn't have bothered to download it going by reviews if I didn't have a Netflix account. The thumbs up or down shit is ridiculous IMO.
It's not only about that though. Judging by the shows I have watched over the years they really try to up the quality with every production. With movies, they don't seem to give a shit how it turns out.

Exactly. It's easy to say a lot of people watched the movie, but that is only because they could watch it 'for free' with their subscription. Number of viewers, in a subscription model, actually doesn't mean a lot.

On its own it might not mean much, but in comparison to their other releases they can get meaningful results.
Some films/series people will start watching immediately and even watch multiple times, others not. Some films/series people will practically subscribe just to see them, others not. (For example Black Mirror: Bandersnatch must have made a lot of people who didn't have Netflix (re)subscribe for it - it did for me.) You can get a lot of data that shows "this didn't really engage people", "this did".
And also "this didn't really engage people, but it cost peanuts to acquire so it's fine", which is how these films of dubious quality end up on Netflix
TWIN PEAKS is "something of a miracle."
"...like nothing else on television."
"a phenomenon."
"A tangled tale of sex, violence, power, junk food..."

My free month with Netflix lasts until January 29th. I joined the free month to watch Bandersnatch the way it's meant to be watched. Since then I've browsed and watched a ton but I've run out of interesting things to watch since soooo much is trash. I'll easily cancel on the 29th, I have no more interest in Netflix.
Yeah, it was convenient to use the Netflix app that is installed in my Smart TV and the quality was good. However, I'm running Serviio (streaming platform) which allows my TV to stream full quality from my PC.

I already cancelled my subscription, it runs until February 2nd. You'll get a whole month even if you cancel early (same as Amazon Prime)

Brawl in Cell Block 99
After the gloriously insane Bone Tomahawk, there was simply no way to expect normality from this movie, it had to be a wild ride. It's got an inhumanely sturdy Vince Vaughn, a solid grim direction, vicious violence and...nonsensical resolutions, purposedly goofy special effects and carefree music when you least expect it.
You really never know whether you're watching a depressing drama or the hardcore brutal version of a Bud Spencer movie, but it works damn well. 7,5/10

Glass - 4/10 ... I saw it last week and totally forgot write about it as it was so ... boring.
And it started so interestingly! But then the movie just exposed that Shyamalan apparently has no clue how to tell a story? The stuff that happens in the last 5 minutes: Why the fuck should anyone care?
Spoiler: | How stupid is the approach to talk people with super powers into not believing themselves?? |
Did Shyamalan really just made another movie allegory to show us that he is the miracle kid he wants to believe that he is?
"Look, people told me that I do not have super movie making abilities, but I made Glass and it is super and people will share it with others and when people see it, they will be surprised and astonished. They will love me again!"
Nah. You just make it very clear that you had something for some time and maybe even the right people around you to talk you out of crappy ideas, but as good as Split was, as boring was Glass.

how was Split good?
i mean, okay, opinions are divided like germany before 1989 on M.Night Shemalechem´s movies but while 6th sense was good for its time, nothing else from that director was close to beeing good (the one with those old farts was at least watchable but not more)

Havn't seen yet and didn't read spoiler... sounds an awful lot like the ending to split. Remember Bruce Willis! Remember Unbreakable? |
Haha yeah, that definitely sounds like the Shyama-lama-dingdong® moment. Situated at the very end of the movie, it instantly wipes out every interesting development that precedes it with a swift move making you feel both outraged and empty inside

Glass - 5/10
It was ok but not very original story. The problem is that Shalayamala is an inept director. It was boring, some situation didn't make any sense, action was lackluster, I didn't get some people motivations.
Spoiler: | Like David's son doing nothing while he was being drown. Like wtf? |
And that stupid ending

Absolute fucking trash. Just don't even bother. This is the most pointlessly slow movie they've made and don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with a slow pace if there's a point to it. But this movie has no fucking point whatsoever. The ending is a joke and will leave you more pissed than anything else, just do yourself a favor and don't bother. Also, you can pretty much skip forward every now and then and you'll miss nothing.
If you still want to know the story/ending:
Spoiler: | Earth is ruined due to climate problems and has been for a long time. Most people are on a colony at IO where they're gathering resources for a trip to another hospitable world. Main character is the daughter of a retard scientist who told lots of people that they can survive on Earth if they just use science enough... Fair enough but they'd all be alive if they'd gone on the colony ships instead.
Anywho, dad scientist is long dead. Daughter still lives on earth on a mountain where it's still hospitable and is also a retard for not leaving yet. The last colony ship to ever leave will leave in a few days. A guy visits her in a balloon on a mission to revenge kill her dad for the tripe he sold them about Earth being possible to live on, then has sex with her. After finding out he's long dead he decides to at least save his stupid as fuck daughter by taking her to the last colony ship. They wait and wait and wait for the wind to change so they can take his balloon.
Complications arise and they have to drive the balloon to the city (where it's really toxic) and refill it with helium because the coordinates for the launch were changed due to weather storms.
Up until this point it's just a generic too-slow but okay movie where you still have at least some hope for an okay-but-no-more-than-that ending, perhaps a nice CGI-scene of the surface of IO or something for us sci-fi nerds? Well, sorry to disappoint.
Dipshit daughter decides to look at art and in doing so has some kind of idiot epiphany that she's going to see if she can survive without the mask. So she removes the mask and realizes she can survive without it somehow. No fucking reason explained why and no more of an ending than the following:
She tells the guy who's still wearing the mask that she's going to stay and that he should go tell the colony that there's still hope for humanity on Earth. End scene of her standing on a beach with a kid obviously born from the seeds of the guy who wanted to take her to a better world. Yeah, great world to give birth to your child in. A toxic wasteland of no people other than dipshit mom and nothing else. END.
FUCK YOU. Just, FUCK YOU. |
