Perhaps things get better when they augment actors with digital doubles (ie. the actors are basically being motion captured and then have their features superimposed by digital means).
Alita was "performance captured" as Cameron explained in the pre-movie video-reel we were shown. So Salazar acted all (well, most of them apart from obvious physics ignoring ones) the scenes and the captured footage was overlayed with Alita.
Yeah, but that bug-eyed thing sure isn't a natural looking human.
(as others have written; I don't get why they had to create a human-like character with enormous eyes. Trying to LITERALLY translate an anime character into a three dimensional realistic being just makes the whole thing weird imo. We'll see, perhaps I'll change my tune once I've actually seen the movie).
Saw it last night at the cinema. Better than I expected it to be. Bit of an abrupt ending though and clearly getting a sequel at some point. Seems to end at a halfway story point.
Great visual, very high production values and Alita was great. The movie is ruined by a horrible script though. I won't go into details (there aren't any anyway), but it's pretty much the first quarter of the first part of a potential trilogy. If a couple of flashbacks, lasting a few seconds each, are the most interesting parts of your story, something is seriously wrong with your story. I had the same problem with Jupiter Ascending. Something very interesting has happened and something very interesting is happening at this EXACT moment, but FU just watch this paper thin story instead. On one hand I want to see this to succeed so it gets a sequel soon since the actual story seems interesting (correct me if I'm wrong manga readers), on the other hand I want this to fail hard so Cameron knows he should finish (or at least START) his fucking story. Yes it looks great, but I felt like I watched a tech demo.
Really liked it, i give it a weak 8/10, didn't think the story was anything special (which is of course is totally expected for this type of movie). Great and fun action and good characters.
Would have loved to see in 3D (friend can't see 3D so we always go to see 2D version).
Fox contends breakeven is between $350M-$400M, while other finance film sources with knowledge of the budget say it’s significantly more. A $50M domestic start over 5 days would be considered at the very least respectable for a movie this size. We understand Alita‘s price tag was originally $200M, and shaved down to $170M between New Zealand and Texas tax credits.
They revised their report, originally (snatched from google cache) it was saying:

Outside film finance sources with knowledge of the pic’s budget have informed us that breakeven is anywhere between $500M-$550M, and well, good luck reaching that. We understand Alita‘s price tag was originally $200M, and whittled down to $170M between New Zealand and Texas tax credits.
TWIN PEAKS is "something of a miracle."
"...like nothing else on television."
"a phenomenon."
"A tangled tale of sex, violence, power, junk food..."
"Like Nothing On Earth"
I read from somewhere that it was pretty clear from the start that it will struggle to break even. So that makes me wonder why Fox decided to go forward with it.

5/10
Is it a bland and predictable kids movie as the trailer suggests?

Cameron producing, using the same tech as Avatar, so there was a chance it could become a hit. A gamble for sure.

I still wonder how Avatar became a hit in the first place. Beyond it's CGI it's a clichéd pastiche of previous works that I found boring and the CGI wasn't enough to save it.

IMHO
I didn't like it the first time i saw it. Then i saw it again and i was surprised of how much i enjoyed it. It's very Disney. I think i just had the wrong mindset when i saw it the first time. Should be seen in 3D on a big screen though. I don't find it boring but story or characters are certainly nothing out of the ordinary.
I've only seen it on my telly at home and I can't be arsed to use the passive 3D glasses I have (I'm not into 3D in theaters either). I prefer 23.976 cinematic style.
The problem is it's really made with large screens and 3D in mind i believe. There are tons of scenes which are just not very immersive in 2D because there's no sense of either height or depth, or at least nowhere near as immersive as when you view it in 3D and on a large screen (124" here) But yeah, it's more like a roller coaster ride than anything deep or super interesting, the story itself is really lame tbh.
A worldwide finish above $400M is expected, though Alita remains a pricey break-even proposition and only recoups 25% of Chinese turnstiles — finance sources still believe that Alita will have a hard time seeing profit.

Seems like the best parts about this movie are the ones where they remained faithful to the base material ( world building even though it's brightened in tone, fight scenes reminiscent of the manga ).. I will really never understand why they feel the urge to come up with a teen movie bullshit plot and polish the rough edges when they're the best part about it ( I didn't like the manga's second part as much so far, still have to finish it up ).
Seems like most of you really liked it though, I bet I won't enjoy it nearly as much because as poker_cheetah pointed out, we have unrealistic expectations that an Hollywood adaptation will keep the soul of a gritty, dark manga, so I'll give it a watch but it's already spoiled to me. vurt called this Cyberpunk, so it seems like the artstyle didn't get as Ready Player One-ized as much as I thought it would - only the plot seems to have been affected.
If they actually plan on making a sequel: the next part of the story opens up the world and the plot in a very enjoyable way in the manga compared to the almost claustrophobic opening arc, so that's something at least
Signature/Avatar nuking: none (can be changed in your profile)
