I didn't mind the reimagined version before they got too greedy.
I don't see much point in the most recent preview version given that the enhanced edition is available. edit - agree with vurt. It didn't do much for me.
I wouldn't say they got too greedy, the project just exploded without any constraints. The new reboot will of course be superior to the old one since it's 3D accelerated so the effects will be much better, the enemies 3D and I'd expect weapon handling to look much better since those will be 3D as well.
Plus, they will also probably add some effects like fog and HDR or something to muddy up the looks a bit as without it, the old level architecture becomes somewhat painfully too obvious. It wouldn't hurt to add lots of clutter objects around.
Looks a bit meh but as they have explained these are the original textures slapped on the new engine, and not the final art.
Given it doesn't look terrible with the ancient textures of the original game, it is promising it will look good when they show the new art.

"original textures"? Not a chance. They would be something like 64x64.
Edit: even worse, 32x32 it seems. So yeah, not a chance. you can tell on e.g blood textures that these are fairly hi-res, 32x32 means super pixelated.
I looked at the video again, and i think it's around 50/50 new and old textures. It does use some old tiles for e.g floors and some for the walls, but there's a ton of new textures.
We were expecting to have all the levels blocked out by September, but with no other details...however, Jonathan has been able to apply the textures from System Shock to Daniel’s BSP giving us an insightful look into the original game. The textures have been modified to take advantage of PBR rendering and lighting placed to mimic the original.
...
Keep in mind these are the original textures and not the final art! Not only will it make the Adventure Alpha more interesting but it will provide the team with a blueprint of how to approach updated art, lighting, level design, etc.
While Daniel finished the blockout Jonathan has been busy placing the original (albeit updated) SS1 textures. Here are some comparisons with the original game.
...
I want to stress that these are the original textures and not the final art!
Now let’s take a look at the updated SS1 textures within Unreal - again, these are not final, they are the original game textures updated with PBR properties! However, due to the positive feedback we received we will be using these textures for a “Retro Mode” that you’ll be able to access in the final release. Should this be a mode you have to unlock or should it be available from the offset? Please share your opinion with us in our Discord channel.
And fron the video:

Just to re-iterate what is stated in the description - these are the original levels using the original textures from the game. The purpose of this alpha is to rebuild all the levels 1:1 and be able to complete all the objectives necessary to finish the game. There will be many more updates, please stay tuned

It will, these are the original textures from 1994, but some of the final art is in there - the doors, cameras and some props.

Agreed, nice to see that the shocktrain didn't derail. It currently looks even better than the original Unity demo/concept before that unfeasible reboovision&mismanagement drama
Games looks good. The worst part seems to be mutants - lacking animations and fighting them looks too easy.
Also i don't know about the voice acting - both the crew and Shodan who could be more creepy.
Still, the game doesn't seem dumbed down which is to be praised nowadays.
his is not final! There are missing enemies, weapons, effects, and sounds.
We've also included a few different musical themes, tell us which you like best in the comments!
That explains a lot (haven't seen that). Although there is nothing about animations.
As for the music - it really differs. Hopefully they will choose the more spooky "loud-quiet-loud" one.
As part of the pilot Game Festival on Stream, more than a dozen games are scheduled to be playable. Some of the games that will release free, limited-time demos include:
Felt quite similar to the old demo that came out years ago, no?
I noticed some changes in the assets.. the white ghoul like types does not wear the orange clothes anymore, they're just naked. there's pixelation up-close to stuff, dont remember if that was in the old version.
overall it looks really good. didn't really "wow" me though, it is pretty much exactly what you would expect. Maybe i'm getting spoiled would die for an Underworld 2 remake looking this great, but they can skip the pixelation completely imo.. i bet there will be a function to remove it here in the final version.

You mean the pixels? pretty sure that could be fixed easily. If not its no biggie, i even kind of like it for the most part. it can get annoying for some things + it can often look like its a mix of super hi-res graphics and pixelated, which gets odd..
It's a conscious decision to create the textures like that that appear pixelized.

It's an art style, different people like different art styles. I know a lot of people don't like the original Gears of War "gritty" art style, others thought it was the best looking game when released.
Here’s a look into the approach we’re taking with textures of the game. With System Shock we want to create a quasi retro look that combines modern physically based rendering tech with a low-res, pixelated texture aesthetic that evokes the low resolution of the original game. To this end, the texel density of every object and character in the game is strictly limited to only 256 pixels per meter, to keep the level of pixelization consistent across all surfaces. Like some modern 2d games that combine old school aesthetics with modern framerates and effects, we hope to use some of the limitations of old graphical styles to give a unique feeling, evocative of how you might remember older games rather than how they actually looked.
A consequence of this low-res aesthetic is that UV need to be very meticulously laid out to keep details as clean and readable as possible while also minimizing ugly distortions that would be less noticeable at higher resolutions. UV edges need to be “squared off” when possible and lined up exactly along texel edges to try to ensure a clean, readable texture pattern.
Literally every pixel counts, and from a character artist’s perspective this is possibly the most challenging aspect of production.

I like it, personally, but I also know that it's contentious and many others don't/won't. As for the demo itself I'm having a blast with it... amazing atmosphere and lovely visuals too. Not sure how to change ammo or even reload, but I've got a bunch of Magnum 2100 clips in my inv yet the game won't reload.
