I'm fine with the combat, it's new, it's fast paced and there are a lot of options with combat arts, consumables and prosthetics. Bosses are really great even though many of them are basically samurai/shinobi they feel unique.
The setting is also fine - but the level design gets really samey - there is very little variety until pretty much the end of the game where you get some unique areas.
And the story seems to be a japanese style rehashing of DS. Did they really need to redo the whole hollowing/undeath thing? Did we really need another obscure ending that you would never even get an idea how to get without a guide?
FROM is just unable to make a completely different game.
I think its more a case of keeping things familiar. I'm sure they could remove all that, but then people would complain and say it doesnt feel like a fromsoftware game anymore.
I am completely fine with them not straying from their core formula too far, as there is no other "franchise" in the industry that even remotely replicates the unique feel/atmosphere induced by the sum of all the parts of a "Soulsbornekiro".
I tend to frown upon these indicators even while I’m undeniably prone to their effects. I sometimes lay awake in bed thinking about how I’ve reached level 30 in The Division 2, or how gratifying it is to have fully cleared an area of its SHD Caches
If you don't have the time for Souls games but find grinding to level 30 in a Ubishit satisfying, stop gaming or atleast just stop writing about games you hack
Also this part:

But in Sekiro, my progress is measured mostly by how well I’ve learned this infinitely complex sword-fighting game.
Seriously motherfucker? A game expecting you to get better at it yourself, a concept we've had since the 80s, before hack companies decided to shoehorn half-assed RPG lite mechanics into every turd?
What is this treachery, how dare a game expect me to get better instead of having some numbers indicate the growth of my in-game character?!
but this is par the course for me, i always have trouble with non weapon wielding bosses
Just sprint the whole time (hold the dodge button) and stay behind him the firecracker prosthetic is very useful in this fight, it's one of the easiest mini bosses this way.
Genichiro Ashina is dead. I cut him to pieces, fucked every little piece I could find and then I shat and pissed on the remains. Fuck you. And fuck you FROM. This is not how you make a challenging game. .
The game was fairly easy after that fight...and a short game overall.

What? Did u just shit on all old-school RPGs and in fact most RPGs and action RPGs?
No, I shit on twitchy games that are made too easy with all the RPG lite mechanics to the point that they don't really need to be twitchy at all, since this "journalist" brought up fucking Division.
This has nothing to do with proper RPGs, it's a completely different genre with a different focus.
By "twitchy" I mean games that require quick mechanical skills like reflexes and timing, like pretty much all the really old-school platformers and shooters.

woo thanks, managed to beat him!
that guy in the dojo was surprisingly easy with his double attacks
as was the guy at the top of that tower
that is until he called down the lightning and smashed all those who do oppose
i haven't done that rb before landing move yet, am i misunderstanding this or something? so this should only work if he's doing that kanji air lightning thing right? do i just jump in place then rb before landing?
Definitely take save file back up in case you plan to check bad ending before going the good ones. The bad ending cuts out like half of the game and just ends.
The way I see it, every life is a pile of good things and bad things. The good things don’t always soften the bad things, but vice versa, the bad things don’t always spoil the good things and make them unimportant.

RPG lite mechanics = stats and gear

Imo it only gets harder. The double tag with the old guy if you pick the bad ending? Harder than Genichiro.
The big old guy in their place if you chose the good ending? Basically Genichiro but harder.
The Optional boss on that battlefield before the last boss? Infinitely harder than Genichiro.
Yeah, I went with choice 1 first and the game just ended. Glad I took save backup to reload and did the longer ending where at least 40-50% of the bosses (the good ones) were left out from 1st choice.
Genichiro Ashina was hard but if you beat him, it gets fairly easy till the last 2 bosses (Demon optional and the old dude) in one of the endings. The Monk/Dragon/Ape were all big but not hard compared to others.
Very good game and everything worked smooth. Took 40 hours. The L1 + resurrection does make it a little easy compared to DS/BB but still a solid game.
Still prefer DS > BB / Sekiro. BB performance was terrible.

Yeah, him and Demon (though optional) were hardest.
Spoiler:
The old dude in bad ending can be cheesed with shadowrush / firecrackers. But in good endings, he comes with 3 phases and does crazy damage. On top of that you face another boss before him (1 phase/though a bit easy); still makes the fight super hard to clear all 4 phases.
For Sword Saint
Phase 1: simply block and stay close. Not hold but respond to his attack with L1 and strike. That will increase his posture enough to land a deathblow. When his sword shines & when you see a sort of waves he prepares, run back. If you miss the window it's pretty much game over.
Phase 2: hardest. Can't stand close too long nor far too long. His bullets do crazy damage. Run in clock/anti clock direction to avoid the bullets. Wait for him to do his jump attack and then you get a small window to land 1-2 strikes. Rest just keep running away. It's long but safest.
Phase 3: similar to previous but with lightning similar to Ashina. When he does, jump (just when the red marker fades) and press R1 to counter it to stun him.
You can play aggressively and use axe/mikiri counter for quick posture but if you die you have to roll from the start which is way more tedious.
edit: added spoiler tag.

okay so i finally managed to beat "everyone's favorite boss man" in the game.
and i have to agree with the naysayers...
Spoiler:
this is not fun. i mean either make the encounter one health bar and have him transform after that or have a checkpoint in between phase 1 and phase 2, i.e. let the player rest up and when you want to leave the place spawn the boss in phase 2. The way it currently is however is jsut stupid. it's not even that the boss is super difficult per se , it is just tedious chipping away his health for two phases while conserving health potions so that you can actually get a decent attempt at phase 2.
I installed the iso this early afternoon with the idea of just doing a quick test, [7 gaming hours later] the level of addiction has reached the roof and I can't put it down
The Frommen have done it again, what an absolute gem. It reinvents itself whilst keeping some of the old concepts intact (kind of ), it feels both familiar and fresh thanks to the brilliant combat system and responsive hopping around. My arse is getting kicked relentlessly (butterfly hag be damned) since I had to apply the clean slate approach and forget about Dark Souls' mechanics, but every death is useful, there's always something to learn and unlock in order to git decent at parrying properly and improve my rusty timing. Thankfully the m&kb implementation is actually good here which alleviates the frequent seppuku sessions.
Stealth is a pleasant addition, it's quite simplistic in terms of AI patterns (can't carry bodies either) but it adds more variety and is a necessity in many levels. Exploration is rewarding as well as per usual, though nothing can really rival Dark Souls when it comes to atmospheric level design and the constant sense of dread and despair. This game has a different tone overall and the fixed equipment might be restrictive, but the combat has enough rhythm/depth to make up for everything, plus doesn't require shapeshifting into a rolling barrel which is positive in my book.
How does this moron even live his real life if he is so against having to constantly adapt and resolve problems? How do those people become game journalists even?
