I still can't understand how people keep buying this every year and even waste so much time to 100% it.

And @JB: What the hell with your walls of text always! grinhurt Very Happy

+1

AC Pirates was the best, of course it had to go downhill as they went from a joyful RPG-esque Pirate game with exploration back to same old stale climbing and awesomebuttoning.
It was definitely the least french game of the series, you know what I mean.

Yeah I applied a couple of weeks ago and was never accepted :/

Still had my fun with it, bought this on some sale and waited for my gtx1070, then played it on max details with glorious 60 fps. PC Master Race

I love the progression in these games, when starting out I still have the patience to wait during stealth missions, taking my time, planning my approach... but once I am decked out and towards the end of the game I turn into the biggest asshole in town, inconsiderately killing, backstabbing, full on sprint-jump-killing any guard or enemy in my path because I just want the game to end quicker.

It was a good Assassins Creed, but somehow I even enjoyed the London one more.

I enjoyed Syndicate far more than I did Unity, but most of that comes down to what you prefer in setting/time period. I loved Industrial Revolution London - they did an awesome job on the little touches making the city feel alive.

Black Flag is still the best though (apart from the insta-kill combat).

I liked it more than most AC titles, definitely more than Syndicate.

But I suppose it's also a luxury to having played it 4 years after release rather than during the horrible launch

In fact I played all the games in a row starting in late 2017 and Unity performed better than Black Flag (even with PhysX disabled)

but the article isn't wrong, technically it was a marvel - certainly after all the bugs were fixed, and it's not like the story and characters were terrible - neither was the setting.

Hell, I'd argue that the protagonist, Arno, was the best since Ezio - and in my opinion the first hour(ish) of the game (until you end up in the real open world and are truly free to do what you want), basically the introduction/prologue, are the best 60 minutes of the entire series. Especially if you played AC rogue and have that sense of transition.Though it all goes downhill from there.

But the Co-op was boring and almost always ended in detection and just slicing away at enemies while everyone in the lobby just does whatever the hell they want, the missions were the same old with the only good addition being the Murder Mysteries (which were far better in Syndicate, the only part I actually liked about that game) and the gameplay actually made the stealth approach very hard and unenjoyable

you can see in almost every playthrough of unity on youtube that people inevitably progress to just using smoke bombs and killing everyone while they are confused - which was the only viable playstyle in that game apart from a generic frontal assault

stealth was encouraged with the new side-objectives during assassinations but it was very hard with the million NPCs they placed everywhere, with how incredibly easy they would detect you (especially the plethora of snipers on literally every roof) and them not really having provided any new meaningful ways of evading detection

infact some of the previous features were not present, like hiding in bushes or whistling

I'd still say play Unity for the gorgeous world and atmosphere alone, but stick to the main story, murder mysteries and the DLC

It's still one of the best looking games ever made and neither Origins nor Syndicate can in my opinion hold a candle to it in terms of graphics

Yeah the pre-baked lighting and especially for interiors while it's static it does allow for a unsurpassed amount of visual fidelity that would not be viable with current hardware. Smile

Mirrors' Edge 1 does much the same and it still holds up aside from character models perhaps.

Origins has a incredibly advanced engine but they do have to contend with framerate.

Stick that engine in a remaster of Unity and that'd probably be pretty spectacular though they might decide for a full dynamic implementation over the static pre-baked one.

Although the more likely outcome is that the underlying engine code base is revamped and updated in places which would bring some improvements while being faster and cheaper.
Not going to happen of course but having the entire series remastered properly on the newest engine would be spectacular, fixing existing bugs and issues and shortcomings in the process though this goes for a lot of older titles I suppose whereas an actual remaster these days is usually not quite as grand as it sounds.

EDIT: Far as the actual game content goes I didn't hate it but it had all the traditional Ubisoft open world issues and also locked progression behind contests and the phone app thing.

All those blue chests? Phone app locked.
All the five star armor and much of the weaponry? Contest locked that ran for months.

And the map was just filled with icons for various collectible things in between story missions and actual side missions like the investigations.

AI and reliance on stealth while removing some options for stealth and increasing enemy numbers was a problem too but already mentioned, changing the combat to elaborate but also lengthy combos before that random guard actually is finished off made it better to just use those smoke bombs and kill them via "stealth" attacks instead.
(It's faster and you don't get shot by all the other guards waiting for Arno to finish twirling his weapon around.)

Played this all weekend. Quite the fun (and pretty) game, for the 'old' ass creed formula. Performance isn't all that great for such an old game, but nothing too annoying.

Yeah, movement feels heavy and not very responsive. Press space to free run upwards, but even with just shift, the guy's climbing on everything Laughing

So, I finished Unity incl. the Dead Kings DLC and while it was enjoyable enough (pretty great world building and architecture) there was basically no story. What story there was happened to be the weakest of all AC's to this point. Instead they filled it with tons and tons of various side quests and grind. I didn't feel like spending days collecting cockads, chests etc. after finishing the main quest and a ton of grinding just to reach 100%.

Soooo. I installed Origin again. And after ~2 hours or so I just feel: I just can't get into it. It's gorgeous but it's boring as hell. It's like it doesn't know what it's trying to be (except the fact that it doesn't want to be an assassin's creed game). RPG? Slasher? Adventure? Explorer? Open World? Nope, I just can't get into it and this is the second time I've tried to get into it. Odyssey was even worse, I couldn't reach the 1 hour mark from start.

The only other two AC games I haven't done properly are AC III and AC Syndicate. I've tried them, played AC III for a couple of hours but the setting just wasn't interesting and something was off with Syndicate. Maybe I'll give AC3 Remastered or Syndicate another go but if the AC-franchise has dropped AC itself and turned into an RPG/Adventure/Slasher/Explorer/grinder I don't see myself caring about this franchise again. Meh.

They need to make an AC game that plays like Hitman.

All these nice detailed cities feel empty.

Instead of the whole open world thing, reduce size to a single city but make it so that we have complex interiors for buildings and you can go approach assassination missions in different ways.

A thousand times, yes !!
Assassin's Creed should be about rewarding stealth while leaving the possibility to go for the brute force approach with a very difficult fight near-impossible to win, and that stealth component hasn't fundamentally evolved since the first few games - if anything, it has been downplayed throughout the series in favour of elements which I can't bring myself to care about.

This is the last true 'Assassins' game.

Origins, Odyssey, Valhalla (even) are good games. But they're a different breed: action, adventure, accessible, casual.

Unity is like... the King is dead, long live the King.

Le Unitè was casual as well, though it represented indeed a more interesting kind of casual where the combination of simple stealth, awesomebutton-based parkouring and the strong atmosphere free from colourful game-isms contributed to giving the old formula a focused identity.

The actual missions' structure, AI, and "narrative" were of the typical mundane Ubilevel sadly, but the game offered (and still offers) a remarkable presentation with a fairly decent cat 'n mouse sandbox and arguably the best animations of the entire series. It could have served as the prototype for something genuinely interesting, too bad Ubisoft went for the Syndicate route first and the bloated nuAsspeejeez hybrid later.
